Yep wet with either one. You don't need much abrasiveness, just enuf to knock the nubs off and scuff the surface to give the next coat some bite. I used the scotch brite and it worked great. Paint with the hardener will/should not load up the paper. If it does you're sanding to soon. Minimum of 4 hours cure before sanding and next coat.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Wet sanded with 320 gently then switched to 500 . It feels slicker than owl poop ! A friend from work loaned me his hvlp . It has a 1.4 and a 1.8 tip . I,m thinking about trying to spray. I guess the worst thing that could happen is spraying to thick. Could I practice with some latex or would that be to thick? My compressor works but it ain,t the best in the world..

Sorry SP, can't answer ya. If you've never used an HVLP, spraying the latex to practice basics would be ok, and it will be different if you've used a regular auto paint gun (gravity, correct?). But no it won't be the same as spraying the boat paint. Check if the gun still has the maker & model on it. See if you can find info for the gun, helpful tips for use, set-up, what tip to use for which paints & paint specs (thinning) for that gun. That's about all I got for you...............

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Just looked back at WOG BF page 10 . I think for spray use the 1.4 tip and 3/4 cup acetone 1 oz hardener for 2 cups paint.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

I reckon that ought to do it. The Rustoleum isn't $100/gal, so it's won't be too pricey to practice with it thinned & hardener added? 1 2.5cup mix should spray quite a bit of practice stuff.

I'd still try & find setup & spray info for that model, esp if you've never sprayed w/ HVLP. Still about adjusting the air pressure & the paint flow volume. Make sure the paint cup is clean, our guys leave finish in it when they put it away:facepalm:......And check the air pump filters, our's never gets cleaned out, big surprise. I may be able to use it when I get to this point, but it may be too abused. Most of our stuff is.

Yep use the 1.4 tip. Watch the temps. You gotta be @ 60? or better. 2 cups paint 1oz hardener 3/4 cup acetone. To set the gun do this. Put in a cup of Mineral spirits. Make sure and put on an inline filter like this...
2 bucks @ HF. On upper side of the gun is the Fan setting. Pull the trigger and turn this knob and you'll see how it goes from a small to a large fan. Adjust it to the smallest fan and then back off until it just starts to get big. Leave it there. On the upper back of the Grip is another Knob. this is Your Paint Volume control Screw it in all the way and nothing comes out. Screw it out you get a lot. This one is the one you have to play with. Get some card board and spray it with the MS. When you spray across it slowly and it gets wet your volume is about right. Empty the gun, mix your paint and give it a go. To much volume = Runs. Not enough = bad coverage. Play with it and you'll Know when it's right. YOu'll get coverage with no runs. There's also a "Sound" to it too just like with roll n' roll. Once you hear the paint coming out of the gun with the right fan, and volume you'll remember it.

Make sure and shoot some Acetone thru the gone immediately after and remove the cap and clean it well paying attention to the air holes.

Here,s the gun I picked up the filter and air reg yesterday. So the fan adjust is the top nob on the back and the the one under it is for volume. What,s the small nob on bottom of the handle for?

The gun is a Central Pneumatic Professional model # maybe 94572.
Did,nt get to do anything on the boat today .
I had to help son in law to be put together an 8x10 metal storage building with wooden floor base. They have about 100,000 million brazzilion nuts bolts screws washers and panels to install!:eek:Got about half way thru the roof panels and ran out of light.
Gunna try and put the second coat of paint on theH/T hopefully tomorrow.

I hate the metal shelving w/ all the little nuts & bolts. An 8X10 shed, ah yeah no thanks:p

Good luck on shooting the paint on Sun. Please leave enough time to post photos, pre-game.:D

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Well this morning was gunna try spraying #2 coat on hard top . Not that I was expecting any problems I had my share .
1,rst prob I changed tips to the 1.4 putsome MS in and could not get it to spray .
Prob #2. seemed like a lot of air was being lost at the coupling under the reg, maybe not problem I don,t no.
Prob #3. My compressor finally pumped it,s last bit of air . I knew it was coming paid 60 bucks for it 5 years ago.
Prob #4. Already mixed paint for spray. Rolled it like it was alot of bubbles but worked em out ok.
Prob #5. Had to go finish setting up future son in laws metal shed.
Made it back home H/T was dry .There was some bad spots that if I did,nt do something they would bug me forever. Sanded lightly put some 3m filler sanded and then wet sanded. Put another coat on and the 3m flashed thru so I will roll anouther coat tomorrow.
Giants have the ball !
see ya S.P.

O I forgot to change the needle for the 1.4 tip ! prolly why it would,nt spray.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Put coat #4 on this afternoon . Hopefully it will be a keeper. Do I need to buff out ? I have a big angle grinder but I think I need something with a little more variable speed. I don,t want to mess up all this work!
The boss gave the go ahead on gitten a new compressor. HF has a 21 gal 2.5 hrp 125 output for 169.$ I t says requires oil . Not sure if it would be any good. I want a halfway decent one without breaking the bank. If there is such thing!

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Hi S.P.,
The hardtop is looking awesome...

The finish is looking PRO! Nice work...

Compressors can be your best friend or your worst enemy...depending on what you expect to use with it determines how much you NEED to spend...
It all boils down to SCFM's...if what you are going to use requires say, 9 CFM at 90 psi, you are looking at close to and over the thousand dollar mark...
If all you are going to run is a paint gun at 3-5 CFM at 30-50 psi, you can usually get away with a decent hobby compressor in the 100-300 dollar range...
Hope this doesn't burst your bubble too badly, but I have learned the hard way...some air tools use so much air, that a hobby type compressor can run it for a few seconds, then it turns on, never turns off and still can't keep up with the air tool...
Do some research on the types and CFM requirements of the air tools you plan to use now and in the future, and get a compressor that will satisfy those requirements...otherwise try and use electric equivalents of the needed tools.

All that being said, if your compressor requirement runs into the semi-commercial end...keep an eye out on CL, for one that is being sold by a shop nearby that might be going out of business...you could end up with an excellent quality compressor at a bargain basement price...

Just my 1/2 penny for what that's worth...

Regards,
GT1M

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

I bought my 60 gal 5 hp Sears Compressor on CL for 250 bucks. Patience is a virtue. Do NOT buff that paint job with a Grinder. Go to HF and spend 40 bucks on a VS Polisher.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Thanks GT, Wood, Gunna look around a little and see what I can find. I just want one for around the house use small enough to pull around the yard so I don,t need 500 ft of hose. Pump up tires, maybe turn a ratchet , nailgun , paint a boat or two..

3 or 4:D
Quote edited for effect:eek:

Ask GT1M about cutting/polishing/buffing fresh paint..... Based on his tips to WOG for repairing those chips, he may have some really good insider tips/knowledge on the polishing/buffing:cool:
