Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

My primary fishing bud for many years was my FIL, may he RIP. He was a Master Shipwright at the Charleston Naval Shipyard during WWII and always amazed me with his attention to detail and innovative solutions to problems, challenges, etc. I fixed up a little 15ft tri-hull for him but I believe he would be most impressed with your planning, execution and craftsmanship. Good luck!

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Thank you very much, Bill...

Well all in all it was a good Monday...can I actually say that?
Yes, because I knew that it would be a slow day...just a couple of cars to finish up and not much else going on...
Sooooo, I left the boat at the shop on Sunday, hoping to be able to get a little more time into it...
Success, I cut out all of the rough shapes of the the rod locker bulkheads and actually got about half of them fitted...

Also pre-cut all the pieces for the Step Up to the forward casting deck...

And what will be the Tackle Storage Compartment...

I actually climbed on top of it and bounced with all of my half ton of weight on it and except for the suspension on the trailer, it felt as if I was standing on the ground...rock solid...

Almost got enough green to get the expanding foam, so I am stoked...
By having most of the pieces pre-cut and fit, after I pour the foam in the sole cavities, I can get the front half permanently installed...
Yeah baby!

Might be a fairly slow day tomorrow, and if it is, I am going to get the rest of the forward bulkies fitted and see what else I can squeeze in...
Till then, Happy Tuesday, crew...:watermelon:

Great progress!! Really impressive work GT1M. I can only strive to have an ounce of your craftsmanship.... Btw, reading through your thread and learning a lot, quite the novel it's turned out to be.

I can't wait to this multi-sectional live well come together. Very excited about that.

I have also read and been told about using rounded edges... However, mine is square and I bought some bait fish to put in it when fishing down at the beach... I literally could not kill the things. They stayed alive for about 2 days in hot July heat of South Alabama. I finally drained the livewell at the ramp and tossed the little floppers out (only way I could catch them)..

Thanks, Troop...I can honestly say that the many hours spent, visualizing, cutting cardboard mock-ups, making sketches and consuming cold beers and hot stogies is beginning to pay off...

Great Monday, & here's to a good Tues too......
Thanks JC, Tuesday was a wash, but today was pretty good...

Thanks, SP...If I pull an oops! and stretch the boat about four feet, I could put a bigger live well in...

Thank you for the compliment, "further"...hope it is as educational as it is entertaining...

Nice.. like the tackle in the step idea too.. SKEW
Thanks, ShowMe...but you lost me on "SKEW"??? One of the many that came to mind was..."Some Kinky Evil Weirdness???

Glad to hear the new toy is getting lots of use and gonna be nice and cozy for the Winter's sleep...Can't wait to see what neat new goodies you get for it...
And thanks again for the cleats, they are Suh-Weeet!

I too am much anticipating the first big fish fry...

I have read the same about the rounded corners and still don't really get the gist of it because I look at my fish aquariums and realistically, all the fish in there are not much more than bait fist, yet the aquariums have very square corners and the fish seem to thrive...IDK, but just for good measure, I am going to round off the inside corners on the live well...maybe some wild fish will be prevented from getting stuck in a corner...

Actual mini update coming next post...:D

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Okie Dokie...Wednesday Update...

Slow shop days mean very little fertilizer for the Benjamin tree but since I have many small things to accomplish and the boat is just sitting there...

Got the other pre-cut bulkheads fit in place...then I started working on the Bulkhead for the Rod Tips...

Then I put it in place and made a cardboard template of the piece that will be for the handles and set it in place...

Kind of looks like that dream buck with the massive rack...

And a couple of overall views of the whole rig...

Yep, I think I like it...a lot!:eyebrows:

Got a bit of a busy day tomorrow, but I hope to get a bit of the rear section of the boat a little further along in the planning and mock ups...

Checking a couple of local sources for my Expanding Foam purchase and I should be able to get it/order it by next week...Fingers crossed...

This weekend I want to try and get whatever plywood pieces I have fitted, wet out with resin and covered on the faces with a layer of CSM...

Happy Thursday!

Looking good! BUT!?!? ;) Do you really want your rods to be supported at the tips? Not really a good idea, you might want to see about a center support for those rods so they don't get broken. Doesn't really have to be center of the rod but back up the shaft from the tip a foot or two.

You make a valid point and one which I was already contemplating...especially since not all of my rods are 7 footers, I have some that are 5'6" and they will definitely need a support about where the half way point is...it will serve as an additional support for the longer rods
You can't see them in the pics, but the tips are not just barely sitting in there, the PVC guide tubes extend 2 feet beyond the bulkhead, so at the very least the front 18-24 inches of each rod is supported...the one rod in the pic has 3 of the guides in there...
The other thing is that 99% of all the water this boat will ever see is flat to very slightly choppy...no big water for me...canals, lakes and maybe an occasional river...so it isn't going to be tossed about like a big water boat, well unless of course you consider Lake Okeechobee big;)...
The other thing to keep in mind is that I am building a lot of modular features into the storage areas of the boat...similar to the variable sized live well, the rod locker could easily become a huge storage locker by removing the rod supports {My current thinking is to make them out of Starboard and build in some guides on the sides of the locker to slip them in and out of, forwards and backwards, as needed} and filling it up with things like additional fuel tanks, overnight camping gear, etc...
:D

I figured you had it figured out. ;) Keep in mind, if your weather is anything like it is here, you can go out on a nice calm day and be chased in by a ravaging storm with 70 mph winds, not to mention other boat wakes etc. I figured you would have some sort of tie downs as well.

Yes sir, you are absolutely correct...weather can definitely bugger up the day real quick...
My saving grace is that most of my fishing is done very near the shore and if it gets too nasty, too quick...I am grounding it...
My biggest concern would be getting caught out in the middle of the Big O, although that should be a very rare day indeed...at which time the least of my concerns would be a busted rod or three...
As for boat wakes, I absolutely can NOT cross another boats' wake at speed...the design of this hull makes for an extremely unpleasant ride...so much so that you could get tossed clear out of the boat...so in scenario where two of us are headed towards each other at speed, I immediately throttle down and ride the other boats' wash, at which time it just becomes a very rock and roll kind of ride, not great, but not gonna crumble your teeth either...
BTW, don't ask me how I know...
This vid I found on You Tube shows an extreme example of how these boats behave when trying to cross a wake at speed...Right around 1:30
And Yes, you know me well, I planned on having a bungee type strap to sling over the rods when in transit...

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

I second CC254's comment, but I seem to remember there will be PVC tubes sticking out of the rod tip holes, for additional support, correct?

I'll add that there are 13 rod grip notches & 14 rod tip holes....

Still best custom rod holder mock-up yet! Awesome!

I only have a touch of OCD w/ a nice slathering of ADHD :yield:

I wouldn't want you caught in a squall on the big Oche & have 14 rods out that all need to be stowed quick & the Bassassin w/ only 13 slots
