Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Alrighty then...
Had a nice day road trippin yesterday...hit a few lakeshores from the big "O" to Istakpoga and a couple others...Admiral actually caught the one and only keeper Bass, but dumb luck, no ice in the cooler and no brain to remember to take pics, but hey, I am proof enough she caught it, so that's good enough...anyway both of us had zero luck rest of the day, so one little fish wasn't gonna do any good for a fish fry...I guess that was the momentary inspiration at the time to just let him go and grow up some more...
Well after a nice 400 mile round trip, some real good eating out, lots of good time spent fishing, a 14 hour day out and about on the road, got home and passed out...
So, I got up nice and slow this AM, thinking about trying to get something else done to the 'ol "Bassassin"...
Let me tell ya, it was hard to get motivated, I was feelin real lazy...
But boat restoration fever got the better of me and off to the shop I went...
From the previous days use of materials, I knew that I would be running really low on resin, but I gave it a go and was able to get the last two sections of deck installed and PB'd all around the edges...

And here are the proof pics...
Section 3 installed and weighed down...

Section 4 installed and weighed down...

And an overall view...

Took a little break, went home, got myself cleaned up, then went back to the shop, checked that everything was all set up and pulled out the screws in the scabs, took all the weight off and snapped these pics...

I can now say the "Bassassin" has a 'sole'...

Actually ran out of resin and PB just as I finished putting a little PB on the last of the open edges...
Gotta pick up more resin to make more PB and make sure I get a good water tight seal around the edges and tab everything in place...
Hoping to do that early tomorrow, since things are a bit slowed down at the shop...
I ended up using right at 7 gallons of resin to get to this point...
That includes the almost 4 gallons of PB to "glue the deck sections down and seal up most of the edges, wet out almost 50 square feet of CSM, and some liquid resin that I used to wet out certain areas...
All in all decent progress and I am very pleased with the outcome...
I am officially out of gas and it is O-Beer-30, so till tomorrow becomes another day, hope everyone has had a most excellent weekend!:D

Nice work GT as always ! Glad ya had a nice trip with the Admiral . Any fishing is better than no fishing at all ! I know you had to let the fish know that ....

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

As I hoped, slow day at the shop...went and picked up another fiver of resin, did some light D/A sanding to knock the nubs off and went to town PB-ing and tabbing the sole in...

I am actually looking forward to the rain...:rain:

Just for the purpose of accountability...that is approximately 25-26 gallons of resin up to this point in the build...
Approximately; 10 lbs. of milled fibers, guesstimate of about 10 gallons of Aerosil, about 12-15 yards of 1708, about 15-18 yards of 1.5 Oz. CSM...

While I await the next money tree harvest to afford the purchase of the expanding foam,
I will be in full creative mode and ready to begin the layout and design of the superstructure...

Hope everyone is making good headway on their projects, till next time...

Happy Boat Restoring, y'all...:D

Hey GT, I thought it was high time that I got over here to post on your thread after your much appreciated posts on my thread. I've been a bit busy, as you know, so I had to catch up on your progress. The wheels and seat bases look great. You're working magic turning that sheet of aluminum into new hubs. And, the deck... looks awesome.

Dude 25 gallon so far WOW:eek: That hull could stop a 50 cal armour piercing round!!!

Nice work as usuall looking forward to the design of the superstructure as well!

Almost Beer30 here have a good one

Deck & tabbing all turned out great!

Shake that money tree til the leaves fall off. It's almost fall, they gotta drop soon anyway. Right?

Pending new layout graphics, ya say.... hmmm.... interesting.....

I am shaking and rattlin that 'ol tree as hard as I can...
I am fired up now...Now if I only really knew how to use a graphics program...ah well there is always paper and pencil...

Thanks GWP, I am hopin to get this thing wet before I have to will it away...

OK, weekend update...

I am in the process of making up some proof of concept bulkheads for the superstructure.
Once I get some definitive results I need to get the boat over to the shop along with as much of the permanently installed peripherals...like the fuel tank, batteries, seating area, console mock-ups, etc...

Just to wet the appetite of the pic lovers, here is how I am planning to build the composite bulkheads...

The current design is super light, adds both insulation and some floatation, seems really strong and provides a solid mounting point for any future hardware...

Currently made using 3 layers of 1/2" foam sheets, stacked and glued together, then a 2X4 Fir with a lamination of 1/8" door skin to make up the difference between the thickness of the stacked foam and the thickness of the 2X4, then they are skinned with 1/8 Mahogany door skin on both sides with glue...

I have discovered two things so far with this design...
The foam sheets have a very thin plastic sheeting on both faces which prevented the first attempt at gluing them together very much an epic fail...after removal of the plastic sheet, they seem to have liked being stuck together...
The other item is the amount of glue that it took the glue all these pieces together...I am sure I will get to a point where there is less waste and be able to use a lot less glue as I figure it out, but I think I am going to be looking at least a couple of gallons of glue before it is all said and done...this first piece I used some gorilla glue I had left over from a previous project, but I think I am going to go with TBIII for the future lams, since it is actually water resistant when dry...
The thought crossed my mind of just using some inexpensive Elmer's White Glue, since it is all going to be sealed when done, but the added expense of a better glue just makes sense...I really don't want to have to do this again...on this boat, anyway...
I'll be sure to inform as to what comes of the glue situation...

They will get covered/wrapped completely with a layer of CSM prior to being installed with PB and Tabbing to the sole...

I am still playing with the idea of closing off the bottoms of the bulkheads with a 1X2...

Another idea is to build the structures/bulkheads similar to partition walls in a house, using vertical 2X4's located at load bearing points...

Still a lot to play with, but it is coming together bit by bit in the 'ol brain bucket...

Oh yeah and I finally did a pressure test on the fuel tank...found the gasket around the sending unit just needed a little snugging up of the bolts and it was tight as a drum...

Hope everyone is having an awesome Iboats weekend
Happy upcoming week...:D

Gus, seeing that you are sealing the foam and it really isn't a structural unit (I assume) why not just get some spray adhesiv to stick them together? Quick, easy and shouldn't take but a can or two?

Like others, anxously awaiting the next episode...

Ya know, that is one heck of a good idea...might try some of the spray stuff vs. contact cement in a can...see which one goes further and costs less...thanks, Troop!:)

Good stuff ! Installing vertical studs glued and fastened to the skins might keep the skins from bowing outward if there is any weight that is going to be on top . Foam between the studs .:hat:

Ya know, these are actually going to be load bearing members...
Which is a good reason to design them just like load bearing wall partitions in homes...
I would probably look to change the dimensions of the top plate/header to a 2x2 [should be enough material for any fasteners/hardware that will eventually be attached to them] , with 1x2 studs, 16"o.c. and make the bottom plate out of 1x2...then add the foam in between, with out needing to use any glue on the foam, since it will no longer be relied upon to carry any load, then skin the whole thing and wrap in CSM/resin...hmmmm, would certainly save on some glue $$$...

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

May be a moot point given the most recent post, but if you go spray adhesive, you have to splurge for the high-end loctite spray that is foam compatible. I know from personal experience that if it doesn't say foam compatible on the can, it will eat your foam -- quickly!
