Yeah they are, I luv'em...got some Seasense underwater LEDs for the live wells and storage lockers, too...but they are buried in the stuff I took off of the boat when I gutted it, for use when I get it back together.

Thanks Judge, I wish the best of all things for you and your Family this New Year.

I am actually waiting on my neighbor to hook me up with my glassing materials, so I can at least start plugging some holes in the hull, while I wait for the Plywood that I bought gets good and dried out before I start cutting on it...prolly a couple of weeks or so...

As far as the trailer, I am looking for a possible donor trailer, since the way mine is set up, it is all wrong for proper loading/unloading and weight distribution...I would have to spend a big chunk of change in hardware and rollers or bunks to get it set up right... so hopefully I'll find one that has what I need and either use it or transfer the "goods" on to mine...
Then again, I might be able to throw some reconfigured bunks on mine for not too much green and call it done...

The only real concern is the cost of all the hardware, fittings, etc... and the fact that this is a Galvanized Steel frame trailer, everything I bolt up to it will have to be either galvanized or stainless...I think???

The advantage to this trailer is the fact that it is galvanized and therefore I don't need to worry about putting any kind of finish on it...

Soooo, in the end, if I can just set it up the right way for my boat, that is what I would like to do...

Fortunately, for the time being, it is Number 5 on the list of things to do, out of 10......yeah right!

I'll see....

hey GT1M. Happy New Year to you and yours!
i've been lurking for a while, so it's time to post.

...My neighbor is a Marine Captain with connections to some guys who work at Bertram Yachts, and he is hooking me up with some fiberglass supplies...Might be able to score resin at less than 20 bucks a gallon, CSM and 1708 on the cheap...
that's amazing! so glad to hear your great fortune! you deserve it....payback for all the great information you freely give to us know-nothing 'glass boat junkies. ;) :p

all the best.

Now that Jasoutside has officially 'completed' the Jet, and is now going to be splitting his time on the islander w/ some craziness ToughMudder training, those of us in northern inclement weather states will need at least 1 of you southern boys to fill in & satisfiy the mob's 'need for progress' jones.

It's been 2 whole days of the official 2012 work week, what's this neighbor "the glass connection's" ph #? I can make a call on your behalf:D I have been authorized to offer him a moderately frosty, partially palatable, "aged' for quality in the can, Billy Beer. If it will speed up this process and get those supplies headed your way!:rolleyes::facepalm:

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Thanks for the kind words Allan...and welcome aboard...

JB, My neighbor is usually out to sea, captaining some ship somewhere...he should be around either this weekend or the next...
I really hope soon, because I am hearing faint rumblings coming from the North...I believe the angry mob is looking my way...

This photo came by way of predator drone...

angry-mob1.jpg

I am also waiting at least another week for my plywood to dry out, but progress is coming...
Gotta run now, the first batch of brownies for the mob is dinging...
hopefully that will kep them at bay for awhile longer...

The Mob LOVES brownies, as long as they aren't Cab-o-sil cakes:eek:

Glad to hear 1 of us is close to making some headway on put back. Be forewarned, the smell of fresh brownies can tend to rile the mob up in anticipation of the sugar high. :D JC

hey GT, another source you could get the resin form is www.fiberglassservices.com. i got mine from them while i was in clearwater. whith the hazmat shipping it come out to 125.00 for 5 gals of resin if you drive up there it will cost you 100.00 for 5 gals. their price on 1708 and CSM is not bad either.

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Thanks rrumba, I'll look into that possibilty...of course, if I can score resin at 20$ per gallon, locally, it would save me a bit of cash in fuel...Clearwater is about 275 miles from me, one way. At 10 MPG in my van...

Hi Dave, thanks for droppin bye...

Hopefully this weekend I'll actual get started cuttin some ply to dry fit the transom and laminate my 3/8 ply into 16 foot long by 2 foot wide by 3/4 inch thick, pieces for my future stringers...

Just a general question to throw out there... I am going to laminate my transom plates and my stringer blanks using PL Premium Adhesive...any pros or cons from my fellow iboaters???

Pics to follow...:)

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

When I get to that point, I too plan on 'laminating' my ply transom pcs w/ PL, then resin & CSM prior to install. And I'll bed & fillet the deck edges w/ PL using this method w/ plastic to minimize bubbling:

PL 'cove/fillets' bubble prevention

Using the plastic method above, I'd be comfortable bedding & filleting stringers. Went to the dollar store for 'good' sturdy serving spoons to run the fillets, $2 for 2, got 'plastic/rubber' bondo-like flat spatula sets too.

If I had Gorilla Glue, I'd probably use that before PL to laminate the 2 3/4 pcs for the transom, but I can get PL reasonably in tubes & it will keep better then GG once opened. But GG is a complete b@$tard to work with if you don't get the 2 pcs setup & FIRMLY screwed/clamped together. The foaming action that makes it such great wood-to-wood bond quickly & easily forces poorly clamped work pcs out of shape.

And it is very 3M 5200, impossible not to get some on stuff you'd rather not, & takes FOREVER to wear off your skin:eek:

Many a lunch on a construction site has also taught me that a single serving size of: Cheetos, Fritos, Lays or Doritos (un-paid, un-tested secondary product usage, 'non-endorsement'), works really well to loosen PL or GG residue from your finger tips. DOESN'T affect the flavor of the PL in the least:facepalm:

I now have a Jas 'bomber' GI tract!

Hey Gt1m, with all that Christmas love you got you better stay ahead of me ;). We're catching up, haha. Glad to hear you're movin forward bro. We'll both be out chasin the big ones before we know it. I want pics of the stringer gluing so I can benefit from your learning. I was just trying to figure out what I was going to do for my stringers, so thanks for the idea.

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

When I put my transom together I used 1.5 oz csm between the 2 peices of 3/4 ply. I laid out the 2 matching sides and put a good coat of resin and let it soak in the ply. After it set up and was still alittle sticky I aplied the 1.5 oz csm. Then I mixed up the PB and used a 1/4" notched trowel to spread a heavy coat on both of the matching sides. I then clamped the 2 peices together. This gave me a much stronger transom and I didn't have to wait 48 hours before I took the clamps off. I also think it gives me better seal against water penetration than the PL. I also did this to seal the transom to the hull.

I used the PL under the stringers and it took about 7 tubes if memory is correct at about $7.00 a tube. It was very costly. If I had to do it again I would use the PB like OOPs says to do.

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Hey Decker,
That is/was my original plan, and I am still "floundering" about as to how I am going to do all my laminating...My biggest obstacle/hurdle is whether or not I can score my fiberglass materials soon enough, as compared to a quick run to HD for the caulking gun and PL...although you make a great point which definitely tickles my wallet...the cost of all of that PL, as opposed to the less expensive, faster drying, better sealing, stronger gripping, easier to get chicks with PB...

Hi Craig,
Yep the Christmas Love has been a real pick-me-upper...
It may not keep me ahead of your build, but it goes a long way to keeping me in the race...
Biggest reason for that is my Tower of Power needed most of it to get itself back on the road to recovery...
So, even though it is not directly related to the restoration, it is a huge part of the restoration...;)
That being said, I did have enough left to get the plywood and hopefully enough 'glass stuff to get my hull OOPSIES, transom, some of the stringers, and the crossbrace installed...

Having reached this point, I am definitely going to get as much done, but slowly...
I am somewhat altering the finished product from original, and I want to make certain that everything I do puts me closer to that end...

Howdy JB,
That was an interesting article on working with PL, especially the plastic wrap part...however, as I said above, I am still "wishy-washy" about how I am going to do all my gloooin. When I figure the cost of the caulking gun, and the approximately 10 tubes of PL, I am well into a hundred bucks...split another way, that is prolly enough resin and CSM to do the entire lamination and installation of these pieces, with maybe some left over for everything else...then again it could be "a-wishin-its-a wash"...I'll see how the math vs. labor works out, and let y'all know...

Thanks for chiming in...helps the brain get exersize...or is it exorsized???!!!:D
It's FFFFFrrriiiiiiiii-hhhhh--DDDDDaaaaaaYaYaYaY!!!

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Congrats on getting the motor funding sorted out and the ply, plus some glassing materials headed your way soon. Hope the weather stays good for working under the 'blue dome of doom', for you.
It's 15 outside, w/ snow blowing sideways over nicely ice encrusted roadways. Continuing through Sat, but will be 50 Mon. I may have to re-think my grinding plan for Sat & Sun. As I need to push the boat partially out of the garage & tarp off the cockpit so grinding dust 'mostly' goes outside:redface: Hard to heat the whole of outside:eek: so I don't turn into a big dusty & blue popsicle....

TGIF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I may be missing something, but in all the reading I've done & videos, it seems to be quite a bit of PB to get everything bedded & filleted in. By case 12 large construction tubes (28oz ea), this:
PL400.jpg

is <$59, shipped from the big orange box store's website. And don't think I'll use it all. Opened tubes will have 'some' shelf life, un-opened protected from freezing/heat tubes will have a fairly long shelf life. Unlike resin that has an unopened shelf life of 6-9mo. If I use 75% (9tubes) that's @$45, which is very comparible to what I'd pay for shipping a gallon of resin & some portion of the 1/4" chopped strand + cab-o-sil. Thinking that I'd use at least 2/3-3/4 of a gallon of resin to make fillets. I may need to re-think this some..to be continued in on my disjointed thread of sorts.....

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

So I can get chicks by simply making PB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :p

I can't wait!

I'm also using PL for transom and beding stringers...
