I'll second that, but you will likely want to be closer to the green line IMO, or controlling the boat at speed may get difficult.. your going to have to play with it in the end to find the best position for your boat, and how you drive it.. Oh, and WOW! Shes looking good man :) I hope that my glass work turns out as nice looking as yours..

I think Gus is concerned about the stepped pad, on the keel, at the transom. Is it raised area the reference point for setting the motor height, or the actual keel (that's also several inches fore of the transom).

If I'm reading the info I found elsewhere correctly, since you have a speed hull, w/ that stepped pad at the back, the deeper you set the motor, the more stable at higher speeds, but w/ slightly more drag.

Do you need the Bassassin to haul A over to your fav fishing spot at 80+mph, or will 77.5mph do ya??

Possibly even more importantly: How much chinewalking can you stomach? :faint2:

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

OK crew, I ran another thread in the "Boat Topics" forum to get some other inputs on this topic of where to set the anti ventilation plate...
Taking all the info posted over there and here, I have begun getting educated on this subject...
Thank you all for chiming in...I now have some real good info to base myself in...
The general consensus is that it is going to be a trial and error kind of deal...which can be mitigated to a great extent by the use of a jack plate...
A jack plate, either bought or home built, is not on my agenda or budget at this very moment, but it will be something I keep in mind if the need arises...
At the present time, I am going to work with whatever adjustment is available to me through the use of the 5 different mounting positions provided on my O/B bracket...
As time goes by and I actually start using the boat and get reacquainted with how it rides and handles, given different loads, how it feels in general and get familiar with how much fuel it uses under various conditions...then I will be able to make a better assessment as to what adjustments I will need to make...
Again, thanks for all the input and food for thought...
Happy end of Camel Day and may the weekend be upon us all quickly!

Gus, My advice, for what it's worth, would be this. With a Long shaft motor and the normal 5 adjustent holes, I'd set the motor down as low as it would go on the transom and drill the holes. You can't do anything about making it go lower unless you use a Jack Plate and if you decide to go that route you can mount it to the existing holes anyway. Doing this will allow you the maximum adjustment for the motor. As always, this is coming from an Old Dumb Okie so you MUST take that into account!!!!:D

Thanks Woody!
That is the same exact conclusion I came up with...
As a matter of fact, I forgot to put a link in here to the other thread I had started...

Good news, not so good news...
The good...
Plywood is on hand...
The not so good...
Acting all manly and what not, I grabbed the first sheet of ply and twisted, sprained and seriously tweaked the H-E-double toothpicks out of my right arm...:stupid:
Been greasing it up overnight with pain lotion and pain relievers...currently compression bandaged and all lubed up...I will see what I can get accomplished with a partially non functioning wing...might crash and burn...:twitch:
I'll holler back later with results...
Have a great Saturday, y'all!:dread::stung::crutch:

Oh, say it ain't so... GT1M, you have to take care of your limbs, we only get them once and they have to last you a life time, so be careful. I surely hope you heal quickly and without an lingering problems as well. Take it easy and baby that hurt limb. We need to see that boat project finished. So take care. Really sorry to hear that news... Prayer coming your way...

aw, carp Gus....that really puts a wrench in things. That darn thumb of mine put me behind a month. Hope yours is much quicker. I know it's hard, but sometimes we need to listen to our bodies. Take the day off...the heaviest thing I want you lifting is a cold one & the utensil to flip the burgers or steaks on the grill! There will be other days!

Man down, man down over here..........

Oh, wait, that's ^^^ a tad late :watermelon:

Gotta remember: As our resto threads age, we do too. Perhaps we should get Google to co-sponsor the iboats forum. Then we can all get heads up display safety glasses that flash a red warning banner when we're about to do something we shouldn't. We're too old & wise to do something blatantly stoooo-pid...... Right? Yeah, no, I'm not going to ask the Admiral for confirmation. It's like to NOT be in the affirmative.

Sensors to detect failure to lift w/ your legs might also be helpful. Esp as we age.... I'll be 2 shy of a half century in a few weeks. :faint2:

Hope the ointments (tried Tiger balm?) & compression help. I already find it takes me much longer to recover these days.

Good thoughts your way.

Yeah I turned 48 two days ago and until now I've been telling myself I'm mid 40's rather than pushing 50. Can't escape that fact now; I've jumped a bracket.

I'm learning to go slower and THINK about what I am about to do. Not always successful but getting better at it especially now that I'm back to launching a boat rather than stepping onto one in a slip.

Thanks Red, yep, definitely gets harder to bounce back as the body gets older, seems like it turns more into brittle plaster than rubber...

Thanks for the good thoughts, I am certain they helped me today...
Passed the 1/2 century mark 'bout 3 years ago so I have become well acquainted with Tiger balm...;)

Aww heck, as an Old Air Dog MP, I learned to grunt through the aches and pains...a bit harder to do nowadays, but heck I would never get anything done if I let them take over...anyhooo, some good news below so I am feeling very little pain right now...plus I got a cold frosty already keeping me company and later this P.M. got some marinated pork chunks and pineapple chunks all skewered, along with some fresh corn on cob getting tossed on the grill...:hungry:

Many thanks for the prayer GM, definitely helped out!
I was able to get some progress accomplished and the arm will heal...might take a while, maybe quite awhile, but it'll be good again...

Well I ran out of room on this post for the pics of progress, so it shall be continued next post...

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Alrighty then...
As mentioned this A.M., I was going to attempt to get something done with my new plywood...aching arm and all...
I figured that if I took it easy and didn't strain it too much, it would eventually warm up and let me get something accomplished...
Thanks to all of the good thoughts I received from my fellow Iboaters, I was able to get the front and rear casting decks rough cut...
I gotta give a shout out to my buddy Gabriel who showed up and lent a couple of good healthy helping hands!
Feeling like I got enough done, considering, I decided that next weekend would be a good time to go see my supplier, pick up a few more yards of CSM and another 5 Gallon bucket of resin, to seal up these deck sections...[wow, just thinking about that, that will get me up to 42 gallons...sheesh...]
They will still need quite a bit more work done on them and fiddling with where I want to make the cutouts for the hatches and adding any other necessary bracing or whatever, but by sealing them up I can pretty much leave them in place, rain or shine, and not have to drag them in and out of the house, each time I want to work on/with them...
So, here, in "pitchers", I present my casting decks...

That is all, I am done for the day, shower, lube and wrap the arm, take a long nap, then grill and chill...
Hope everyone is having an awesome Saturday...
And to all the Wonderful Moms out there...A Very Happy Mother's Day!!!

Now that's a casting deck !
Hatches for rod locker and storage to be fabbed up in the near future I assume ?
Gunna hit the half century mark in sept myself .. Kinda dreading the doctors visits/exams that come with getting to that age !
Hope the plywood elbow heals up soon for ya ! :)

Yes, sir...hatches and what not will be fabbed as time marches forward...still have a lot of thinking/planning/positioning left to do before any permanent alterations are made...
As far as going to doctors, unh-unh, not me...better be on a death bed, fore you see me at a doctor...no way jose!
And thanks, yeah the damaged appendage is slowly, but surely seeming like it'll be OK...

geez....that plywood sure is purty!!

Place my buddy hooked it up is in Ft.Lauderdale...if ya need the hook up, let me know and I'll fire up the address to ya...they carry some real nice stuff...this AC Fir is beautiful, some of the nicest I have ever seen and reasonable...
Happy Mother's Day, Lisa...
and to all the Mom's out there...Thanks for everything!
We wouldn't be here without you...:D

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

GT1M, glad to see some more progress. Hope your arm isn't in any pain trying to move along on this project. You really nedd to baby that arm so it can heal quicker...

I have a question that you probably already stated before and I missed it or forget (I'm getting old you know...I think?), are you going to install marine carpet over the finished floors? I wonder because I'd like to see how you make the different compartments seals. On some boats they use a 90 degree angle where the compartment lid/covers also has a 90 degree edge that over laps the compartment edge to keep out water and such. I'm doing (or plan on doing) that same setup with my rebuild project for the rod compartments and will use carpet as well. I was just wondering how to attach the carpet and still make it all look great... What size wood to use and the wood size of the edges too...

Nah, the 'Ol Man upstairs built me tougher than rawhide, brother...Thanks to Him...I should be good to go with the wing...

Ya know, that's a good question and one I can't give a definite answer to, because I am leaning towards a different type of deck material...
So far, the leading candidate, from the samples I have requested, is Mari-Deck...
I have samples of various marine grade carpets, a couple of gel coats, Nautolex, Dura-Bak and Mari-deck, so far...
I am not too fond of carpet since it does tend to absorb and/or hold water...
Dura-Bak is very similar to bed liner material used in trucks, etc...and it can be a bit rough, plus tends to have the typical good adhesion problems of these types of coatings...
Gel coat and bilge coat are on my list of possibilities, but mainly for the inner areas of the storage lockers and bilge, etc...
I may also use one or the other as a final seal coat on the deck, but it won't be the final finish...
Nautolex and Mari-Deck, I am liking because they are a cross between vinyl decking and carpet...
It is a solid material like a vinyl product, but has the slight give/cushion that carpet affords...
Since this is a bass boat, a lot of times you are going to be on your knees grabbing hold of that big 'ol bucket mouth and the Mari-Deck seems like the better choice...at this time, anyway, until, if and when something better catches my eye...

As far as finishing off the edges...I really don't have that figured out, yet...I may end up wrapping over the edge and gluing/stapling, or might glue to the edge and trim it with something to keep the edges clean...
Once I figure that out, I will know what kind of gap I will need to leave between the hatches and the deck...:noidea:

Another point as to the cut and fit of the hatches...I am attempting to design this boat to allow water to run freely to the bilge.
What that means is I am not really going to concern myself with a ton of gaskets or seals and custom designed edging around all the hatches...
I do have a couple of fairly waterproof compartments I plan to build for stuff like papers, electronics, carry on stuff like cell phones, etc...
Most everything else in the storage compartments will be stuff, that if it gets wet, it won't be hurt by it, or if it is stuff that shouldn't get wet, I plan to have it raised up, off of the sub deck...
As a matter of fact, I am designing it in such a way that if any water, from the sky or the sea, gets on the deck, it will almost immediately find its way back to the bilge, where if I am out on the boat and the bilge begins filling, it will automatically come on and dump it, or I can turn it on manually, or if it is sitting at home, bow up and with the drain plug out, it will just flow out, if, of course, I may have forgotten to put the cover on...;)

Hope that helps...
Happy Sunday!:D

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

I personally would go with a "paint on" product for a fiberglass boat deck finish. Gel coat, Durabak, Kiwi Grip... something like that.

Since you have to tab your decking to the hull there is no "wrapping around" for a vinyl sheet product, and I'd be damned if I was going to penetrate my new glassed in decking with a couple hundred screw holes for edge strips to hold the vinyl.

I would tab and glass everything like it's supposed to be and then fair out and sand the seams and bumps and choose a nice light colored paint on product, something in a light gray for your color scheme probably.

The BA has some serious angles to cut and get right. That looks like 3/4" too, good and strong stuff and I don't see much in the way of eyes and filler either. Looking good :thumb:
