On another note.. Glad to see Trooper isn't totally snowed in..

Have a great hump day..

yep on all 3 counts ^^^

Can you carve up the original splashwell 'tub' to save some fab/construction time?

Have a good bottom half of the week.................

Thanks JC,

Been looking at the cut off and still trying to determine how much, if any, could be salvageable...

You have an awesome Camel Day and end of the week downhill slide, also!:)

Maybe just some pie cut sections including the inside curves screwed down to a plywood backer & use it as a form/mold to give you the basic shape w nice inside curves w/out a bunch out cove/fillet/filler....

Kind of along the lines I was thinking...
That is also one of the big reasons I still have all of the original storage compartments from the original cap...
Might use a similar idea when I am ready to fab up the live well and the under seat storage compartments...

GT1M, I am still watching your progress and can see that famous Glasstream HydroBass shape coming along nicely. Not having ever mixed polyester resins before (only epoxies thus far) so I honestly don't know, but IF polyester resin doesn't attack Styrofoam, you always have the option to crave up your uniquely shaped items out of Styrofoam and then coat them with poly and cms/1708 and make most any custom needed piece you can imagine for your setup... Great work...as usual... :thumb:

Thanks GM...

I used to work in a prop house, not the kind that makes propellers, but the kind that makes all kinds of scenery [props] for TV, Music Videos, etc...
We used to make molds out of almost any material you could imagine...
Even plain white Styrofoam [E P S]...
We did use it in a limited way to make fiberglass parts, but the resin would eat into it like lacquer thinner in a Styrofoam cup...So what we would do is add a boundary layer of aluminum foil to the E P S...it would usually work OK but the heat generated by the resin while catalyzing would tend to deform the E P S under the foil...We actually used the final effect in such things as say a metal beam that was somewhat deformed by heating, or even make things to look like they were rusty, etc...

One of the best foams to use for creating a much more stable mold is the same stuff we use in our boats for floatation and structure...however we not only used the 2 part pour stuff, but also used to buy it in blocks that were 2' x 4' x 16' and depending on how much detail we wanted, we would use either 2, 4 , 6 or 8 pound density foam...the denser the foam the better it would take and hold detail, plus it could be used more than a few times to make copies...
We would cut it into smaller sections as needed with a hot wire cutter, a reciprocating or band saw, carve it to shape and still apply a layer of either latex paint or aluminum foil, to seal the surface...

I could easily go on and on about the many different ways of making molds, but I will save any further actual descriptions for the time I actually use any of those methods in my build...

Stay tuned for that, as I do have a few pieces on the new interior that will require the use of some of those techniques...;)

Hurry up Friday!

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Well as the saying goes, better late than never...
My weekend update...
Went to the shop on Saturday and did some 1708 tabbing in a few spots and permanently installed and tabbed the splash well bulkheads...
They took the better part of a couple of hours and since the materials bush is somewhat bare, and I am still awaiting a bumper crop from the moola tree, that was all that could be accomplished...on a side note, I did finish off my 36th gallon of resin and started on the 37th...

The rest of the day was spent doing the brakes on my great boat building assistant's dually truck...we replaced all four discs with some really sweet drilled and slotted ones, all the pads and all of the rear wheel bearing and seals...that chewed up the clock till about 7 PM...when we finally got everything cleaned up and headed home for some well deserved munchies, libations and B.S.:very_drunk:...where in the span of several hours we figured out everything that is wrong in the world and all of the solutions to fix them, however after that much imbibing none of us could remember any of it the next day...:becky:
A very Happy 2's Day to all...

GT1M, WOW 37 gallons and you are not finished? Me thinks you need to replace all the foam with Helium... And I haven't even purchased one gallon yet for my boat. Is there going to be any left?

GT1M, I think you are going to have to start drilling some lightening holes in the sub-structures now. :faint2:

Thanks JC, sometimes it does seem that I am taking a bath...and yep, prolly some more 5'ers will meet their demise by the time all is said and done...

Hurry before I use it all up...

The other day one of my co-workers asked if I could put an SUV on the deck and transport it like a barge...

GT1M, WOW 37 gallons and you are not finished? Me thinks you need to replace all the foam with Helium... And I haven't even purchased one gallon yet for my boat. Is there going to be any left?
Hurry, before I order the last of it...Hey if I could make the under deck area gas tight, that wouldn't be a bad idea, but how much more resin would that take...???

I certainly hope so,, I will need a few gallons for mine..

Great looking work Gus..
I promise I'll save some for my Iboats brothers...

Looking good GT!
Thanks BV...

You may have hit on something there woody...I may start writing soon after I finish this crazy project...

Looks Super GT!!
Thanks, SBB!

Nice weekends progress....and if you are like me you have 120 lbs of pucks lying around...
Thanks Troop, yeah, unfortunately, or fortunately...depending how you look at it...I have been pretty good at keeping my waste to an absolute minimum...Honestly though, I have used some on a few fiberglass repairs I needed to do to a couple of cars...One was practically rebuilding the aftermarket/custom, front fascia on one of those Mercedes Benz truck/vans [like the one the American Pickers use], a couple of Corvette fender/quarter panel repairs and a Lincoln Navigator hood that was unavailable...

GT1M, I think you are going to have to start drilling some lightening holes in the sub-structures now.
Not a bad idea, but then I would have to use more resin to seal the edges of the holes...

Actually, guys...
I am not that concerned...YET!...with the amount of resin/cloth I have put into this tub...
Let me 'Splain...:blah:
Ya see, initial findings show that the average BASIC restoration, which includes stringers, transom and deck, will consume about 15-25 gallons of resin + cloth...taking that into account, I have added a completely new interior/upper cap section to my build and I have been fairly meticulous about making all the wood going into this bucket be as water resistant as possible...
Meaning that every piece has at least one layer of extremely thirsty CSM, and in a few areas, even thirstier 1708 in others...Plus PB really consumes this stuff, I would even venture to say that a good 1/3 of all the resin used has been for PB...
All this blabbering is just to point out that the extra Re-building and redesigning are to blame for the enormous amount of resin being consumed...
In the end, I may lose some load capacity, top speed, fuel efficiency, cruising range and the at rest water line might be several inches lower than originally designed into this boat, but heck it should be pretty solid...:peep:...

Happy TWOS day, fellas...:D

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Thanks for 'splaining it to us old guys, Desi. At first I thought the 37 gallons of resin statement was an April Fools Day joke, then I realized you posted that yesterday. Like my old boss used to say when we sat around brainstorming a new project; "Reality will prevail". Great work, as usual. This thread is starting to feel a little bit splashy. I can hardly wait!
