Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Saturday Update Time!

Running low on materials and moola, so I just wanted to get a couple of odds and ends done to try and use up the last of my 35th
:jaw:
gallon of resin...before it goes all lumpy on me...
Still have a couple of yards of 1708 & CSM...
However, more Cabosil, resin, plywood, more CSM & 1708, and a few other essential items will be needed for the next major phase of restoration...
Life as usual has conspired to make the finances a bit tight for a while, but the future holds some promise...
Anyhoooo...
The task for the weekend was to get the Mechanical/Fuel Locker area started on the long, windy, twisty road to completion...
Got to the shop and laid everything out in its place, made some marks, did a bit of prep sanding [BTW, when you restore a boat, the sanding and grinding will not end until you are done!...just thought I would mention that for anyone delusional enough to tackle this...]...cut some strips of CSM to act as a filler and glued everything in place with some resin...sounds like a quick job...NOT!...almost 5-1/2 hours later...not including set up today and tear down tomorrow...

Some intial test fitting and positioning...

The fuel tank risers getting prepped for install...

CSM strips cut and ready to use as fillers that will glue the risers in place once wet out with resin...

Risers installed...

Continued...

Part Two...

After the risers were installed, I did the same for the Mechanical Locker Bulkheads...

Here are a couple of shots of the finished product...

Also cut, fit and installed the step support on the Rod Locker Aft Bulkhead...

Gonna go back tomorrow, do a bit of tabbing where required, clean up and call it a day...

Hope everyone is having an awesome weekend!
:D

Sorry for the Belated Birthday Wishes! I look forward to ending my 35th in a big way too! Right now I'm stuck on 29. Been 29 27 times so far. But enough about that.

We did have Birthday Cake yesterday along with some awesome smoked brisket in honor of your birthday (actually, one of the airframers' birthday was today).

Great job so far on the "Bassassin"!

Two reason actually...water flow is one...clearance for aerator/live wells drain lines the other...I take good ques from my Iboats bros and try to keep the hamster well fed and active...;)

Looks good, Gus. I, too, spent the whole day piddling with just silly, nonsense stuff that I thought would be done in an hour. 6 hours later, and yes...more sanding....oy vey! You're right, it ain't over til it's over. That is great design stuff there. Good h20-flow! Hey, at least we had good weather. I think I actually got sunburned today(she whispers so the boys in snow country don't throw things at her)! Keep up the progress...we keep gettin' closer, I keep telling myself!

Excellent job on the tank. Really like the bulkheads design for mounting the tank supports. Really well thought out plans..:D

It always amazes and confounds me how long everything takes...

Thank you, Sir!

Even if I did this kind of stuff for living, I couldn't hold a candle to the wealth of valuable knowledge and insight this awesome group of Iboaters has to offer on a daily basis...

Just in case you didn't notice, I am rich! In God, Country, Family [especially my Iboats Family], Friends and Health!

I am off to do a bit of tabbing and boat day dreaming...hope y'all get some quality time to spend on the important stuff...

Happy Sunday everybody!:D

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

GT1M, I have a question for my simple mind. Is your tank sitting directly on the risers or are you using some type rubber or cushioning strips between them? I was just wondering if subtle vibration would cause any wear to the aluminum? I am totally interested in your build because I use to own one of those boats some years back. They are very fast hull designs. Great work!

Since you're getting near the finish (okay over half way through) now, do you have another boat rebuild in mind?

Thanks for following along gm...
In the pics I posted up above, you will notice what looks like white plastic pieces stuck on the fuel tank...
I installed those back in this post...http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...ove-necessity-pride-521706-9.html#post4399920
Those are 'Starboard' sections that I 'glued' onto the tank with 3M 5200...
The whole purpose of them are to prevent any contact between the aluminum tank and the fiberglass coated wood.
Yes, the tank is resting directly on the risers, with the 'Starboard' strips in between...
The tank will eventually be attached to the two side bulkheads via some hardware and also to some cross braces that are yet to be installed...
The tank will basically free-float on the risers, and if any wear should occur from vibration or flexing, the 'Starboard' should be the first to wear out...
Just as an added thought...
Certain types of "rubber" should never be placed in contact with an aluminum tank as it may cause cathodic corrosion...

To answer your last question, YES!
However, several things have to align with the stars properly before that ever becomes a reality...:)

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Quick and final update for the weekend...
Went to the shop early this AM, added a few strips of CSM tabbing to the fuel locker bulkies, slathered a bit of resin on a couple of exposed plywood pieces, cleaned up my mess, loaded out and headed home...
No pics taken due to lack of any appreciable difference from yesterdays work...
Got a ton of home chores to take care of so any further boat work will be awaiting more supplies and time...
Have an awesome day and an even better upcoming week...:watermelon:

I'm glad you caught that ever so slight hint of a future restore, Sam...I think he's holdin' out on us..Aw carp-who am I kidding...I got the next one lined up too, but I need some time without the smell of resin. Heck, my neighbor 4 houses down can "smell" when I'm glassin'! Maybe if we catch him at a weak moment he'll spill the beans??????

Hmmm

Interesting developments over on Bassassin Blvd, invisible boat work  and possible additions to the boathouse

Is getting the Admiral on-board one of the major components of the celestial alignment necessary? :cold:

Have a great week! Boat work or no boat work, you'll be thinkin' 'bout & noodlin' out what needs to be done the step after next. So it counts!
