Re: hull extension in progress with picks

this was after 1000 grit

gellcoatingset7009.jpg

and finally 1500.

gellcoatingset7010.jpg

gellcoatingset7012.jpg

normally 1500 is waaaay to fine to do any good....but in this case i found it took yery minute scratches out that would leave the polished gellcoat cloudy.
thats why i had to go so fine.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

after i had finished sanding....there was some problematic areas where i went thru the gellcoat.....("he" forgot to lay up heavy in those areas as we had discussed.

gellcoatingset7013.jpg

gellcoatingset7014.jpg

gellcoatingset7015.jpg

yi was treating these areas like a repair....sust sand ....aceitone and fill....in this case i was going to use gellcoat......so i mixed up a quick batch.

gellcoatingset7016.jpg

the gellcoat is in the pail.....because it was a little cooler last night i felt comfortable to use mekp in stead of the ddm 30.....(a summer mix of mekp...it gives longer cure times)

the tin container is a product called patch aid......this lowers the viscosity of gellcoat.....that means less orange peel....(i had beeged the two guys spraing the hull to use it...but they didnt know the product...so the wouldnt use it....if we had of.....it would have talken a minimum of 8 hours less sanding.

gellcoatingset7017.jpg

i just sloply brushed it on

gellcoatingset7019.jpg

because i used the patch aid....the gellcoat allmost self leveled...no brush marks.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

btw....the patch aid was mixed at a 10% ratio.....the mekp was all the way out to 2.5%

i wanted a fast cure.

gellcoatingset7020.jpg

the mix worked perfectly.....time elapsed to do that step was only about 10 mins.......once the surface is prepped its just a matter of mixing the ingreidants and painting them on....

while the gellcoat was curing...i started the polishing process......

farecla is a really great product....the compound im using is developed for use between 1200 and 1500 grit.....that means it will polish out any scratches in that range........

gellcoatingset7023-1.jpg

gellcoatingset7021-1.jpg

gellcoatingset7022-1.jpg

gellcoatingset7024-1.jpg

i only got to the nose of one side.......tonight i have to sand down the repair areas.......finish compounding the hull and wax and buff it....if im lucky...it will only take 4 hours.

cheers

Joe, The best advice I can give you is reread this thread from the beginning a couple of times. Then go out and BUY A BIGGER BOAT!!!

Wax on, wax off grasshopper :)

Dude, you're gonna have pride coming out of your ears when you show this thing off. Make sure you add up all the sanding hours (when you're done, not now) and have that total handy when you tell 'em about the boat :)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Oops! Lookin' awesome. Even in the poorly lighted pic of the transom skin you could see the reflection of the wall and other stuff behind it. Man that thing's gonna gleam in the sun! Even though you've had a bit of a time with the gelcoat, you can now see it was worth all the work (and extra work :D). You've got to be feeling pretty good right now. When you're done and have 'er all polished up, sit back with a Corona, and just look at 'er for a while.

Keep up the great work! Can't wait to see what the cap and interior's gonna look like.

You pay a beetle to do it. They have six legs, so it goes fast.

all the time i was doing the sanding and polishing with two sanders.....thats what i was thinking.....wax onn.....wax off :D

i think i even thought grashopper a few times too :D

just a minor problem........i went to the boat last night to look at it with less tired eyes......and what did i see........more orange peel and a lot of scratch marks in it that didnt come out....:(.......i even found a spot in the side that i can only assume somone whacked.....broke the gellcoat and repaired.....then sanded it out....or tried to..........it is not a fish eye or a run but an actual repair that was tryed......i can only guess who that was......

its just a few areas....but .........

the problem is......the light in the shop sux........as you can see from the photos....... ive tried three times to get the orange peel out.....but in the light i just cant see it to fix it.........i dont wanna crawl under the boat to do it....and i out of time in the shop and to get the cap.......

so i really dont know what to do?.......the hull is a little more than half done.....if i do the repairs....i have to go to 400 grit or coarser to do it and start the process all over.......

ill tell ya.....at this point i just wanna say good enough.......but in boat building....good enough is a slippery slope.......

so the delemma contimues........

any thoughts and guidance would be appreaceated......

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Have you tried bringing in some halogen worklights? I have a $10 one from Sears with one bulb and it lights up my whole basement. Here's a link to a bigger one from Sears.

Awesome project, oops! Keep up the good work, and remember 80% of any big project only takes about 20% of the time. It's that last 20% that's a bear.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Paint the whole boat black and start sanding again?! that's the only way you'll know you have a truely smooth surface.

I don't know what your limit is for "good enough"

I'll tell ya what though, it looks good from my house!:D

It looks good enough for gov't work!:D

These are lines we use when talking about the finish we've applied to picky customers floors ;) ( no, not to the actual customers! )

Honestly, it's going to be your call and your call alone....just don't let your OCD marry you to the buffer or that guy will be dragging the boat out of his shop with you and your two sanders-cords stretched to the hilt on the boat still sanding screaming "no wait! I'm not done yet!!!!"

Since you are on a crunch, this is what I'd do.

Get the part that sits on the trailer to your happy place...you can always do the sides and nose on the trailer without the hull flipped.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Break the hull down into smaller sections instead of trying to do the whole side at one time. Use a trouble light if you need more light. Keep checking with the light on the smaller areas before you move on to the next step. Keep your chin up, your almost there. I almost forgot to add that everyone else in your family needs reading glasses and so do you. When you get tired it gets worse. Go get a set of 3x readers and check the finish with those on and you might not keep finding flaws the next day when you are rested.:D:D:D

Great advice. That is the best thing to do!

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Personally I think you've gotten it to the "next step" phase.

You can expect that as you finish the interior, structure, motor, etc and do float tests and work, you're gonna ding the thing some, scratch it, scuff, etc No matter how careful you are.

So I'd maybe do a bit more work to get the remaining easy spots done, then go on to do the rest of the boat. You're gonna have to come back and tweak the hull when it's done anyway, so why not leave the last bits till then? You may even decide to just live with them.

Plus, if you're outta time, you're outta time.
