Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Yes, a few layers of mat would work, it's not that it's that weak, but the increase in strength when woven or stitched products are used is substantial. So if possible it would be nice to have it go over the top of the stringer. oops! has a chart with a comparison of 1/4' laminates made with mat, mat and roving, and a biax.

Would I be able to get a copy of that chart? Or is it in your cookbook, which I have already been given a copy of but have not yet reviewed it in great detail. We'll see later today how Oops did last night. Hopefully he had success.

Have a great day,

Rob.

That should be a sticky in this forum ( the cookbook- first I've heard of it, but it sounds like it's chock full of vitamins! :D )

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

You can buy half round moulding at any good trim shop. Your big box outlet might have it too. It's basically your large dowel cut in half lengthwise.

I was thinking of that too, but I don't know which curvature would work best to lay glass over....Half round would be easier I suppose and you'd end up with the train track look to the stringer more than just adding an inch to the top, you'd probably end up with more like 1 1/2 inches extra width which might be easier to lay up. I'd be more concerned with ending up with bubbles on the inside curve.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I got the Laminate strength chart from a friend that works for a major glass supplier. I had him send it to me when the strength of mat was being discussed in another thread. I wasn't able to post it due to limitations on our company lap tops, so I sent it to opps! so he could.

It may be possible to blow it up, print it, then scan it and post.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

if you need to share something that is to big or has other limits why not place it on a file share site and just place a link to it in your sig file
that is what i have done for several things in the past

I've read pages 16 to the end of this thread just now, and could see sharp corner glassing problem coming. Glass strands want to remain straight, period.

The pins were a good idea, but there's nothing to stop the wet glass from pulling up and elongating the hole, thereby creating a void.

If you use a staple gun instead, there's a definite clamp of glass to wood, it will be much less prone to shift up. You can resin around the staples, remove them after it kicks, then resin the spots.
Or, as Tony Soprano says, "fogedabowdit", and resin over them.

Yeah,

I was just mentioning it.

My plan is to use two by stock, (1 1/2" wide) in either cedar, or redwood. I'm leaning towards cedar. Cedar is light weight, strong, rot resistant, and holds paint or resin well. I'll then take a laminate trimmer, which is just a mini router, and use a 1/2" radius bit to round over the top edges. This will give me 1/2" flat on top for the floor, er, deck, with a nice edge to fold the glass over. I think it will go pretty well, but of course, I'm open to opinions! :)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I just PM'd you oops! though you are probably knee deep in it right now, or half schnokered in Coronas....whichever is fine by me! :D

I'm off tomorrow all day, I'll be in and out. I'm working on securing a way to keep both boats here permanently, and I just found out that I can build a 12x20 shed on my property. Walked it out, and if I have an 8ft wide door and build to the max 15ft height, I'm golden. One of the two boats will fit in just fine, the other can stay out and covered on gravel behind the fence...I get a place to work on the glastron rain, shine or snow to boot! So, I'm going to be doing a lot of measuring and conniving...err, planning on how I'm gonna pull this off. Just sent an email to the building inspector.

If he gets it to me by noon tomorrow though, I'll have it up here by tomorrow evening for everyone to look at.
