Man......the stuff these guys do behind the scenes......wow,,,far more than any volunteer I have ever seen....

Im still trying to catch up with all of the stuff in the mod forum....I thought my work load on the forum was big ( each day that I logged on it took me a few hours just to go thru the pm;s and respond to everyone....but wow...now its double that.

It will take me a few weeks or two to be able to start helping again with everybodys projects.
So If any body has something that they are stuck on......just pm me...

Oops, first time to post on your thread. Found it a while back and have been following your progress with the hull extension , (took me 5 days of off and on reading) like everyone else on here i'm amazed what CAN be done if you put your mind , money, and intense labor into it . I know this is a boat that is being built from the HEART ! ! I like a lot of other people are doing things to our boats that we never would have done without your generous kindness to show us how it's done .
Merry Christmas and keep up the excellent work.
(oh yea drink a Corona for me ... )

thanks bud,.....and hope you had a great christmas as well.
and the corona was drank for you....and then some...lol

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Hydraulic? or electric? I found a new one for ours due to a bunch of rot and a really bad bent rail- didn't see that one til I was takin some photos of what I was gettin into, and well, it just doesn't look good for that trailer right now. So we spent the 800 bucks for a dually and w hydraulic brakes. My wife bought all of us life vests and me ( the smart@## she is ) made me a pair of concrete shoes n gave em to me for a gag gift for xmas. I love her sense of humor all 5'2 of it. :D

CEE MENT shoes?....uh oh.....lol

the trailer has hydraluc brakes....but not working...they never did.....now that the boat is much heaver....ill have to build the system.
but the jury is still out on a new trailer.....i think i would rather go that route than build this one....
but in any case...the trailer will still have to be painted the theme colors and modified

GREAT POST JBC... +1.

Before we know it, Oops will be telling new cadets... "he newbie, don't write on that old thread...please walk the iboats plank."

Do they give you an arm band like a hall monitor? Is there a secret handshake? Do you get invited to the Starcraft circle (cult) meetings? Is their an initiation (e.g. do you have to do something crazy like cut a boat in half and re-build it?).... Inquiring minds want to know...

In all seriousness, I agree with JBC, you have been so helpful on these boards to so many people (including me), and so I'm glad your contributions have been recognized.

Hey PMC, I actually thought your post was funnier... But to each his own:D

I think the rest of the Mods already refer to the act of cutting the transom off & adding a few extra feet an OOPS (<-- note that its not used in the pejorative, its just in all CAPS!) Yeah, look it up, I had to, turns out I had it backwards... Drat, that means my wife is right, sometimes I'm not as smart as I think I am:facepalm:

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Now that its 2012, and your "just" at 4394  I thought I'd give ya a little bump toward 4400. It's the least I could do after the canook comment:eek: over at JDA's place!

Hope the new duties don't interfere with getting some interior layouts/color schemes posted of the long hull.

I hear there's a guy out west that kicks serious @ss on mock-ups & layouts. He's working on a floating pontoon party rig, maybe you've seen his work:). I reckon he could lend ya a hand if the new job becomes a burden :D I think I saw a 'will work for beer' sign on his trailer.... Oh, wait that's my sign & trailer:rolleyes:

Looking forward to a busy winter & spring, maybe get to splash mine in 2012. I'll at least drive down to the river & bring back a 5gal bucket & throw some WV river water over the bow!

Re: hull extension in progress with pics

Hello everyone,

It's 9:00am Saturday Jan 14th 2012 and I was reading iboat on how to choose between paint or gel coat and one user lead me to this hull extension. I'm in Orange County, Southern California. After only spend about an hour reading a few threads, I was crying and reading all the stuff that Oops and you guys posted during more than 3 years ago, it was amazing. The threads were truly inspired people and I'm sure a lot of newbies like me got so much energy to do a big thing after reading this threads. I wish other people have a chance to read this too, but they will if they really want to learn.

Here is my story, just want to share and show you how I got so much inspired from this Hull Extension.

I just bought a classic 1986 17' Boston Whaler Montauk, it's probably went through the hurricane in Texas, the previous own paint the boat with some type of white house pain, it was so terrible. I have no idea so I decided to paint it. I took it to the shop and after the owner look over it, he told me the paint job inside and out would cost me $3,500 not including $400 to remove the engine, not including all the parts if some how they broke when they took it out. So just the paint job it will cost me well over $4000, and that's crazy. I thought the max I would be charged was about $2000.

While I was at another shop to re-power my engine, the owner told me, just sand it and use a brush to paint. He said it will be much better than what I have now. So I decide to paint it myself, and that was only a few days ago.

While I was reading all the stuff about how to paint, what kind of pain, how to sand and fix the glass underneath, there was another idea came up. What about Gel coat?

Last night (Friday the 13th of 2012) I continued reading the how to's and came to Iboat's thread. I have to get the boat to the yard for fixing and painting today or Sunday and have to rent the space for $150 a month to work on my project. I will post some pics if you guys want. I hope not to waste your time reading my thread but as other newbies, I am very confused right now and nervous too because I have no idea to paint or not to paint (never done it before, just the house stuff). I don't mind spending the $$$ to get the tools, machines, materials to paint or gel coat but I want to do it right at least not $4000. So I called another boat painter to look for another bid and he charge $1700 to paint just the outside and $2500 for the gelcoat just the outside, he told me the gel coat will stand better with time and specially when the hull got caught in bottom sand.

I like the gelcoat but opinions on Iboats are so divided. So if you were me, what's your idea? Paint or Gel?

I want to get this to another thread but since I read this thread I want to start here so Moderator can move me to other place if he sees if more proper. Hopefully from this thread it will end my confusion so I can start preparing for my first ever big project. Whether it paint or gel coat I will post pics to share with the community.

I thank you the user that lead me here, thank you Oops for starting everything, the moderator and all of you guys. I'm stop crying now and so happy that I found this threads. Spring is about to be here so I will put my Montauk to the water before summer begin. I do have fun so far and that's all Iboat about.

Thanks million,

Merlotstone,

welcome to Iboats, I am glad you found this forum, and are reading Oops' thread, it contains a wealth of good info, but definitely make your own thread, post plenty of pictures and questions and the community here will get you where you need to go. you have the right attitude, restoration is all about the fun, because we sure don't set any profit breaking records with these restores.

Not a snowballs chance in ...........:D

Your post is the whole reason I started this sleigh ride......

I started this thread as a total amature.....knowing nothing about building boats...(I had worked on a couple....but nothing major).
from there......people in my area saw my boat.....and asked me to work on theirs......so I started a boat repair business...
just a few weeks ago.....The forum asked me to become a moderator here...I accepted so I could better help you !

My point is......that YOU CAN DO IT !

I sent you a pm about starting your own thread....we all will help...
thanks for posting on this thread....it motivates ME !!!!

Thank you, and Welcome to iboats

NoKlu at least it was you putting int he #4400 post you seem to have been here since the beginning.

Me on the other hand came in 2 years late but still waiting anxiously to see it finished. With the lull in oops progress I have had to turn to watch others progress to get me motivated. Actually I don't need any motivation just need less life getting in the way. Like Nephews putting holes in the side of their engine blocks for instance. So have spent the entire weekend replacing the motor. I am goign to be glad that putting in the boat motor will be so much easier. At least now I can enslave him to help on the boat.

Re: hull extension in progress with pics

Just realized I started a new page now on page 177. I wonder if Oops can finish this by page 200. Who wants to take a poll or a betting pool will Oops finish before page 200 or after? What do you think?

Re: hull extension in progress with pics

dont think i will be able to get done before 200. that is only 23 pages.

it sounds like a lot. but at 6 pics per post....and larger pics....it isnt.

i still have the full interior design i have to document for you, how to lay it out.
how to cut the templates.
how to on the upholstery work.
then the application of snap in carpet, and making it fit correctly.
how to cut and make a canvas for the top.
how to cut and make a storage/trailer cover.

then when its all done....i have to do the reveal that will include how to get straight lines on a paint job.

plus a bazillion other little side projects i want to document for you all.

it wont take long to do....but it will take a lot of typing and pics.

i hope to get on this right away for you guys.

cheers
oops

Re: hull extension in progress with pics

We know you are doing all this just for us aren't ya Oops it has nothing to do with you enjoying a great looking boat while drinking coronas does it?

I was partly looking to see if I can light a fire under ya. SO who wants to start taking bets at what page will Oops finish the beast?

Hmm 23 pages left and 25 posts per page that's a total of 575 posts. Oops you don't need that many do you? but then we have to factor in the fact that everyone else will be commenting on the progress.
