i think it would really benefit some of us if you went into more detail on how you make consoles like that

my thoughts as well....

the process to make intricate designs like that would be something to have on the forums.
most of our work here is a patch or replace what was there type stuff.

so fabrication of that style would be a great documentation to have here.

Re: hull extension in progress with pics

My first post on these boards (i think) and this seems like the most worthy post to make it. I am completely motivated again after having spent the last 3 hours going through this post. I am in the middle of stripping a 1984 bayliner 15'er that I got sucked into buying and have been looking for a good source of information. I have no idea what I am doing to be honest but feel much more informed having gone though this post. Thank you !!! This project while I won't be doing near what you did is absolutely inspiring !!

hi.....welcome to iboats !
im honoured that you chose this thread to post in !

now that i have a boat restoration/repair business, i have done several bayliners, including my own.
if you take pictures of the boat....and start a thread here in the restoration section, we will walk you right thru the process of repair.....step by step.
we have had several people that were in the same spot as you,,,,buying a boat, finding it needs work, then, using advice given on these forums, having a working boat that they are proud to own and use !

Hey oops!

I remember your thread pages covering the instrument portion of the dash, but would love to see the details of how you fabricated the steering portion. It looks great with a lot of detail.

the sterring was just the dash with plywood behind it......then i glassed it in and painted it...

ill see if i can find any more pics of that process....

but im kjinda convinced about making a new dash before the rig goes for paint. so that way i can re post the process.
including the wiring.

Hey man, did you ever post up any pics of the foaming process you posted? I linked your suggestions to another site for a guy that is about to tackle his foaming project.

Hey oops!,

Looking forward to your custom built dash process.

If you want, you can check out how I did mine. Nothing elaborate but it was fun to do.

The link to my dash project is in my signature below.

check the selionoid in the trim pump motor.

see if it cycles. if it does...bleed the system and look for leaks.

Hi oops, the pump works when u trim down just nothing happens when u trim up, no motor noise, so I'm thinkin soliniode and thanks for the tip. The original owner still has it and he`s looking after getting it fixed but I`m helping with the diagnostic part so I`ll let him know. Rob

Re: hull extension in progress with pics

timing.......don's suggested that you start a thread in the mercruiser section about the pump.

they can tell you voltages to check from where.

but in my experience... the best thing to do is to take every one of the connections.....use emery cloth....sand each contact point from the fuse box to the switch to the pump and motor. see if that works.....most of the time stuff like this is a bad ground or a bad connection

Re: hull extension in progress with pics

I think the old dash looks great and looks solid as a rock. If you're looking at impressing the chicks them maybe the new one :)

I'll be watching your canvas top build as my old camper top has some tears and needs a rebuild. My existing to is a white'ish looking canvas...are you thinking Sunbrella for yours or are you going keep with the canvas.

Re: hull extension in progress with pics

All,
As a new (used) boat owner, i stumbled onto this site because I had questions surrounding replacing my floor on my new 1977 Larson Glasspar. However, I ended up reading about 80% of this entire thread!!

First of all, all of you are incredible! The precise answers (right or wrong) and the sharing of knowledge was amazing. The group of you should turn this entire thread into a book! It would sell!!

Now... 2100+ posts read later... I do have a question and do realize that i'm highjacking this thread a wee bit. Sorry, but we're waiting on Oops anyway. :)

Like Oops, i'm in Canada and don't have access to the low-priced parts that are abundant in the USA. I'm at a crossroads as to what to do with the saturated foam within my boat. Of course i'm going to remove it, but what to replace it with... i've heard everything from "don't bother replacing it" to "use the water noodles that they make for pools". I was also going to replace the flooring with PT Plywood and do 4" glass on the joints and against the sides of the boat.

Any advise?

Thanks.

Re: hull extension in progress with pics

L77: PM sent w/ some suggestions and a few answers to your Questions...(PM = Private Message)

1: Start a thread for your Larson, oops will eventually respond to this post, but you'll get lots more traffic posting a thread in the Restoration section.

2: Read some more of oops thread & a few more, the PT question is well asked & answered in many places/threads. And a single layup of 4" tabbing up onto the hull is probably insufficient for either bonding to the existing (unless it's CSM) or strength (if it is CSM).

3: see step 1, if step 1 is fulfilled proceed to step 4

4: see 1st half of step 2, if step 2 is fulfilled proceed to step 5

5: Once you've read more then you ever thought you wanted or needed to know about fiberglass boats, their care & construction, repair &/or restoration, read at least that much again. It is never as simple as pulling the old deck & reinstalling new plywood & covering it w/ some fiberglass & resin. Especially when the boat has been subjected to waterlogged foam. <<--- This is more then likely going to cause both the transom & stringers to be compromised as well. Again see the 1st half of step 2, and proceed as indicated.

Welcome to dry dock & look forward to seeing you start a restoration thread for your Larson.
