Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Oops wanted to thank you for the information and pics, I appreciate it as I am looking for a vendor to deal with as far as the csm is but the resin too. Stay in touch and I will the same. I have read a bunch of posts on here and I have to admit that I am a novice at this so constructive criticisms are most appreciated and welcome. Knowledge and education are the keys to a great start but the hands on makes a world of difference . I was going to go with the poly resin . The ship is an 88 so I would hint that it should be made of poly and not epoxy.

yes....will do.

as far as a vendor for your resin and matt......look in the yellow pages under fiberglass supplies. chances are good there is a local shop right by you.
if you are into ordering on line....a lot of guys here use uscomp.....but they are really spendy in my opinion.

as far as being a novice at glassing.....no worries.....if you read the first few pages of the thread.....including some of the longer posts...it has fantastic information in reguards of why a certain cloth is used in a certain situation. and how to use the resin roller properly.

as far as a hull being made from epoxy.....nope....they dont use it in mass production. some hand made sail craft use it, but virtually 99.9 % of the glass boats are made form poly resins.

if you ever get stuck on your build .....just pm me with the link. im following about 50 builds on here right now. there is so many going on that its tough for me to keep track of them all. but ill gladly give any assistance that i can to any builder on the forum.

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Hey oops, I used UScomp on all my resin and rolls of mat and woven and biax and foam... well I got everything from there. It was the best price I could find with everyone giving it good reviews. I didn't have any problems with the products at all. Everything was great. When I finish my bass boat I'm looking to get something else to restore. Im thinking a Starcraft. Not sure yet. I want something somewhat big with a cuddy. Anyways, in your post above you mentioned UScomp was kinda pricey. Where do you buy all of your boat supplies from? If there is some place out there cheaper and still good quality I'm all in! Thats just more money saved to spend on boat stuff! lol.

oops!, are you going to do the sewing?

yeppers........when i started the build.....i was going to go to the pros to do the upholstery......however....upholstery is easy.....so i bought a sewing machine

006-1.jpg

and learned how to do it on a bayliner i bought to re sell....kinda self taught.......mrdflores has some great vids on the subject.

this is before....

053.jpg

and during construction.

054.jpg

the old and new bow seat cushions

056.jpg

and the finished product

087.jpg

its not perfect.....but the people and pro mechanics that saw it up close said it was just as good as any pro job.

the interior in the hull extension boat....(i cant call it by its name because that would give away the theme) is very easy to do.....the captains seats are the hard part....but still, no big deal.

i intend to be starting on the upholstery in the new year, and completed by march or april. lol....this depends on how busy i am building other peoples boats.....i have a few deck/foam jobs to do this winter.....so its going to be fairly busy

That looks great!!! Thats awesome being able to sew it yourself since you can make it however you want and you know its gonna get done how YOU want it. I guess sewing can't be as bad as grinding a hull or fiberglassing!!! Heck!!! I may just get me a sewing machine and make my own seats!!! Mu Aunt sews at home for some company that makes things for the army and surgical doctors and things. She has a few nice big sewing machines and would prob let me use one.

Doood, you make Martha Stewart look like she's all thumbs...
I know a couple good upholstery shops around town that if you ever decide to move down here, where there are lots of glass boats and tons of chicks, you could get work in a heartbeat...
Great job on that Bayliner, can't wait to see how the Longship Corona's interior turns out.
Best regards,

us comp seems to have really good service. and the product is as good as anywhere......however comp one has some really really good resins. in fact...the best i have ever used.
comp one need a minimum order to purchase form however.....so it isnt always do-able

i buy locally ! it took some time to find the supply shops.....but if im short on any product....i just drive across town and i have it in a minit.....they will deliver as well.

i am buying my resin very expencive.....$108 after tax@ 12% (5 gallons) i am working on a way to get that price down.
i cant remember the cost of the glass....but it is so little that i dont even worry about it.

i live in california north....and we have a really good supply of hot babes....but nothing compared to mami from what i have been told.

Hey, wait a minute, it is not an endless summer, it gets down into the fifties, once or twice a year ya know...

Yeah, the "cane" boats have dried up, so to speak, since its been almost 20 years since our last big blow down here, but lots of older floaters that could use some refreshing for sure...

With your mad skills, you would prolly make a good go of it...unfortunately the economy is kinda sucky right now, so I would hold off on the permanent move for now, but if you are ever headed into town, HOLLER @ me...definitely show ya a reeeel good time!

and as far as chicks...wellll, they don't brag on South Beach fer nuthin:D, or Daytona during Spring Break, for that matter...;), and the Keys ain't too shabby either...:)

Later,

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

OKay after 4 lost days at work I finally finished the thread through post 4334, Man oops i thought you would have had the thing done by this point glad to see this thread is still alive. I have my own project going on. Should open a thread on Iboats. Not a stretch but you got me thinking. It was an abandoned 74 Chrysler Conquerior SIII Superbee JET. I am a big Mopar fan so when this come on my radar I was all over it. It was trashed out the 340 was long gone, but the jet was intact though. Floor was real soft guy wanted $400 for it talked him down to $250 a month later and still think I overpaid because the trailer literally fell apart on the 30 min drive home. One of the center corssmembers welds broke and it fell off the trailer. Well the soft floor I had was nonexistant and was actually the foam under the carpet the wood had completely disintegrated. Well after researching I decided I was going to go through it completely and get it done in 4 months. Well finding a complete Chrysler Marine motor proved problamatic and took a lot longer so since there was no motor the rest of it sat. Found one by my deadline paid for it had a buddy pick it up and its still sitting at his place 1400 miles from Texas in Michigan. Need to find a cheap way to get it here wife is already tight on my budget for it. well finally decided to get to work on tearing out the foam it actually survived quite well just an in or so on the top was deteriorated and less than a 1/2" on the bottom waterlogged in a few spots. The Fiberglass on this boat is thin so I am planing on beefing that up and I didnt like the way the motor mounts were done so I am doing them in mahagony since they are coming with the new motor. I have some 24 oz fiberglass cloth thats going over everything with Epoxy resin. Now that I have seen the gel coat work you have done I am plannign on doing mine as well. Its and 18.5' boat and i keep thinking an extra 2-3 feet would be nice for seating since its a closed bow either that or open up the bow but thats were the gas tank is and that heavy V8 in the back needs some balancing out. Anyways its a beautiful boat that I now have lying in two pieces in my yard since I removed the cap to get at all the foam under the front deck. I bought the boat this past January and with any luck I will make my original Deadline of my Birthday just a year later. BTW my wife and I are doing our interior as well. I was going to build it from 3/4 plywood but I like your fiberglass seats as well. I wonder if theres a way to make them where the seats can still lift up for storage (cooler) space underneath them. Maybe an inset that needs to be cut out to create another angled edge for support. Now you really have me thinking. Theres a pic of my boat below.

Thanks again oops

Chris

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

that is a neat looking boat bud.......really like it.

as far as storage under the seats......there will be cut outs.....with the cushion base becoming the actual seat....that will make ample storage.

all it takes to get the boat done by your b day.....is just a little determination. and lots of elbow grease....a little each day....and its done.

since i started a business repairing boats.....i have little time to get my own boat finished.......but i plan on doing it this winter.....is is just a few weeks work from being totally finished......but as of now...the boat drives like a dream...is faster, safer and far more comfortable than any i have been on in its class.

i just gotta get back on it.....lol

Dude... You are a freakin killer "seamstress" (err...um...seamster).... I would be tempted to give you a man-card violation, but for the fact this is a boat-related skill and all things boat-related are manly and cool, especially when applied to a glass boat. In all seriousness, I would love to be able to do that, because what an easy way to do a quick upgrade to your boat that makes a huge impact (sort of like a kitchen or bathroom in a house). Great tool in your trade for (as we say in the south) "puttin some lipstick on the pigs."

Oops, I know I don't know you that well yet, but I tend to think you may have sensory overload in south beach... with all the beautiful boats and women everywhere, there would be too much to process and your hard drive might crash....

Much like everyone else, I have really enjoyed and learned a ton from these 173 pages, and you have been very gracious to share time and input with so many new boaters including me.... Enough of that, though, we better see a reveal on the interior (theme) before this thing hits page 180!!!

Take care buddy,
~rpm

i personally struggled with this.....i contacted the local chapter of MAN INC. and they had to pull my file for a look...with my past history, i was given good points. The final ruling was very similar to your comment about anything boats is good.

however,.....i was warned that wearing my reading glasses when sewing with the machine, while not a violation, was dangerously close to "old man" status.
i reminded them that threadding a needle was basicaly a womans job, and if i wore the correct "vision amplifing equipment" i would not be "breaking the code"
they suggested i use a scope from a rifle to thread the needle, thus allowing me to upgrade my "redneck card" at the same time. but the motion was dismissed as impractical.

im looking forward to the test ;)

thanks for the good words and the encouragement.
i am personally mad at my self for not having the time to finish so far.......most of the projects that i have taken on are large ones.....so the time for my boat is few and far between.
im looking forward to this winter to do the final bit.

I have the perfect solution to this enduring dilemna, You can attach a magnifying glass directly to the sewing machine, thereby rendering any Man Point deductions, null and void, since the vision amplification system would be attached to said machine and thus considered an extension of said machine and not directly connected to your person.
I hope this clarifies the situation...

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the above suggestion has been considered and is in the process. i am currently looking for a electrial station magnifying lens.

this will be attached to the machine with clamps, and bolts.......however, as needed for redneckism, duct tape will also be used.

Cant wait to see those finished seats and the pics on the process of sewing the vinyl. My wife is going to be assisting with the seat builds on our boat. When I boat it I told everyone its a family project. Although its really my project. My nephew has helped with the demo mainly cause he likes to destroy stuff. I have had to teach him temperance and patience. I an still back and forth on whether to regel my entire boat will be putting up some new pics on my forum I created for this project witht he hull and keel gel coat chips that are missing.

thinking about it Oops did you take detailed pics of the bliner interior fab and not just the before and afters would love to see those with more info.

Thanks and your an inspiration to all of us.
