Totally agree on the intensity of these games. Boston will win tonight and Wed will be for all the marbles. BTW, my daughter has/will attend all three games in Boston. Sheesh, she never invited me! With all this going on, after Wed we can all get back to talkin boats. Again, sorry for the hijack.

BRUINS! BRUINS! Sorry, just a friendly jab to all you Vancouver hockey fans. Great series! But I think that you need to score more than 8 goals in 7 games to win a series.
I guess the after party turned bad after the game. Hate to pay that tab.
OK, oops! whats the interior looking like in your boat? Haven't seen any updates in a while.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

As displaced Mass-hole, I must join in the chant: BRUINS! BRUINS!

When one team scores more shorthanded goals in a series than the other team scores powerplay goals, there's definitely a mismatch of intensity. Vancouver has some amazing players, and based on their regular season dominance I can really understand their disappointment. But the Bruins fought hard for every puck and made nothing easy for Vancouver: they left nothing in the tank. I lost count of how many times Luongo went behind his net to routinely set up the puck for a teammate, only to have to scramble because a Bruin was screaming up the ice. You can't maintain that level of intensity all season long, but champion teams know how to notch it up when it counts.

That said, with a lesser goalie in the Bruins net, the series would have been over in 5. Bruins allowed TOO MANY good looks at the net -- I have no fingernails left.

Go Sox!

Oops i located various postings up here on this thread about the peanut butter mixture but was unable to locate the following: "Can it be used for underwater patchwork?"

Thanks, Chris

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

hi chris.....

sorry....i just saw this.
yes.....any good structural peanut butter can be used under the water.....but it needs a layer of glass over it.

i have a new formula for structural peanut butter.......here goes.

1. mix mekp and resin first !.
2 add 50 percent by volume of powdered milled fibers. mix totally.
3. add 25% 1/4 inch short strand fibers. mix super thourghly.
apply.

this gives you a 75% glass to resin ratio......mixed well......its as tough as plate steel.
the mekp is mixed with the resin first because you are catylizing the resin....not the filler.
you have to be quick and mixing is a pain.......but the stuff will bond elephants butts togeather.

remember....any peanut butter application MUST be covered with a layer of glass. it is usually done when the peanut butter is still wet....

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok......here goes....

back on the boat today.....finally.

i was at the local launch yesterday and got mad at myself for doing everybody elses boats and im in dry dock. and i have a tradition of being on the water for canada day fireworks july 1st.
so.......back at the beauty......lol....every time i walk up to it i snicker....it just looks sooo cool even with out a rub rail or finished interior !

i found with dismay that my lower gear case cracked over the winter.....so i have it off right now and its at the welders......im going to throw it back on and see if the weld works....if not....i can get a new lower in a jiffy.......but i wanted to fix mine first.

im at a delemma deciding if i should put the 196 upper gear case back on. and go with a big 24 or 26 inch wheel....

i am running the 149 uppers right now. and with a 21 wheel we were at 50 mph @ 4250 rpm.
i know the bigger gears were easy spin.....i hit 4250 rpm at only half throttle with a 21 wheel.....at that time we didnt have gps.....but i saw 50 or 60 on the clock...(cant remember what it was)......oh well.......an upper swap only takes a few minits.......off to the welders to pick up the bottom end......post again soon.

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

well ....here it is july 3rd.....and for the first time in years i wasn't on the water for july 1st fireworks !

after much delema....i decided to swap the uppers for the 187 ratio for a speed tryal......i can get a 24 inch prop from the shop......so i want to see the difference between the two.
last year during the first real sea tryals....i had the 187,s on it....the motor turned 4200 rpm at half throttle, and was out of the hole sooo fast that i could not even count to one before it was on step.
noklu and i decided to get a new set of uppers, we went with 147,s.
the speed tests with a 23 prop was about 50 mph.
we never did speed or prop tests with the 187.s.
so because its a quick swap....im going to try the lower gears with a huge prop, and see what she will do.

so.....i took the uppers to the shop and started the swap....well...silly me......i swapped the uppers but forgot to change the upper water tube !
i re assembled the drive and started the motor......it ran well...but for some strange reason that i could not figure out........the motor seemed to be getting warm. the temp sensor was not even registering......so i was a little confused.
because i did this on july 1 at 5 pm...i decided that the boat was not ready for the water on fireworks day. so it stayed on the trailer in the yard.....good thing !

with the upper water pick up not installed........the water from the impeller filled the upper chamber of the drive and only a fraction of the water necessary got to the motor.
yesterday.....i pulled the lower, and put in the tube.
i also pulled the valve covers, and replaced them with stock chev cover, this was due to a bad oil leak from the starboard aft side of the old valve cover.
i needed time for the gasket glue to cure......so i just left it over night to cure.

just to let you know that murphy is still around....when i was putting in the last valve cover bolt.......the head of the bolt sheared off. so now i only have 3 bolts in one of the covers and the shaft of the bolt is stuck in the head......(by the way....i was using very little pressure when the head sheared off!....the bolt just failed !)

well.......the boat is clean....the lower is just about to be installed......and i hope to be on the water in a few hours for the shakedown test.

each year...after summerizing and before i allow anyone on the boat....i take it out for a 2 or three hour tour...(lol)....this way....i can judge if it needs more work or if it is ready for passengers for the season.

well.......ill get pics, today, if the boat tryals go well......i will be doing some work on the trailer, it need bearings, then ill be turning to the rub rail and the interior.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I feel your pain Ward. I just got done fixing the blown tranny line on the van last week only to discover today that the inlet side of my radiator has a leak along the perifery of the opening...it's only weeping coolant, but I'm stuck with getting a new radiator...of course, who's open this weekend in the auto parts business? sigh. I also started looking to see where/what was going on with the rear A/C. This guy decided that A/C wasn't important, so he cut and chucked a $150 coolant line because it was in his way. It could have been EASILY uncoupled from the other lines it was attached to...man does that irritate the crap out of me. So now I have to decide, get new stuff and route to normal A/C, or go through the trouble of replacing everything I need to get hooked up in order to have both front and rear working. Doing only front A/C would be easier, but doing the rear would be doing it right...sigh.

Well, I hope you find the performance you are hoping for out of the boat with the new gears and wheel....there's a 26 foot Sleek Craft linked to from Arch's threads that is expected to hit upper 60's /70 with a single naturally aspirated big block Chevy...I think you can see faster than 50 mph no problem with the right set up.

hi mike....sorry bout the ac....thats a pain ....

its sunday today...so not much was open.......i went to fill the lower unit with oil and found out my pump was broken......had to get a new one.....that took an hour.....get the boat running well......clean it up all pretty.......hook it up ......and the trailer lights dont work.....all of my electrical equipment is at the shop !...
lol......what a drag....

but the motor sounds strong and every thing looking good.....
tommorow is the day i hope !.......depends on if work gets in the way....lol

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

btw....on the speed....
(i know you will understand this)

i am wondering if i use the shorter gears.....that i can turn a bigger wheel. possibly up to a 26.

the 145 gears would turn a 23 pitch at 4250 rpm.
now the uppers are at 185. so.......if i can get the same spin speed with a bigger wheel......that will be great. ill just keep a smaller prop for skiing.

that bbc that is expecting 60 ish.....is that a bravo setup?

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I think so. I know he had no interest in the jet. Honestly, when it comes to IO's, I pretty much gloss over the facts as I've never really been much of a gear head when it comes to design. I've always been more of an understand-how-it-works-and-fix-it-guy. Beyond that, I couldn't pick a cam profile to save my life that would go well with any other particular set up. I've never had a mentor in that degree.

It does make sense though to use a lower gear ratio with a bigger, less aggressive prop. Need a big sine wave shooting out the back to get top end. If the motor has the torque to overcome the inertia along with the shorter gears, then it should be able to hit it's desired RPM range...the question is always mathematics, but with boats, it's not really just a formula that you can slap numbers to unless you know what the drag coefficient of the hull is.

I'm sure you've got a good handle on it though, a person can get a good feel for their boat and with a little understanding can put the boat right where you want it. At least you've got the spare parts available to do all this swapping around though! I'm waiting a week for a replacement radiator for the van, and it was supposed to be my week to carpool...guess I'm paying for gas!

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

My 1965 Plymouth Fury, yeah...no problem. I soldered a leak...but that was a brass and copper radiator. GM had the wisdom to make cheap radiators out of aluminum and glass reinforced nylon plastic tanks, and mine is leaking around the inlet tube. I got a replacement off Amazon for $110 shipped, and it's a Delphi brand, which is an OEM manufacture. Locally they wanted 166 for a Spectra brand, which I've never heard of, and if I can get Delphi or AC Delco parts for the van, that's what I'm getting. The radiator is one of many things I won't cheap out on as far as build quality. IF I can get it for a better price, then so be it...the real price is that I have to wait until the 11-14th of July to get it.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

This time when you try out the new wheels keep a log so you can track the changes. I just found the stock deck for my old truck so you can take the deck out of the Ranger if you want to use it in the Canoe. I got a full time rig so won't be around till after the golf tournament.

Hey Oops,
Man oh man! I have been reading this thread half the day, and not working. It is INSANE the amount of work you put into that hull extension. A true example of hard work paid off. I recall reading near the beginning that you had read some books on boat building etc. Do you know any good ones off hand that I could keep an eye out for? Thanks.

There was a new Ogopogo sighting over the weekend, it wasn't you out playing around in a new boat of your own design was it?

I should be up there next Tuesday and part of Wednesday, I'll try to track you down.
