Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Unfortunately it seems like you got more important things to worry about than posting pix. Sorry to hear that.

Send me a note regarding the one I sent you yesterday when you have a chance. Willing to give a hand if you need it. Wife needs to figure out her trip.

Hope all is well.

Oops is slacking; taking a long needed break to admire the work.

Before he has to jump in and finish.

Take a chill-out, oops. One last look...

Hey oops... is this going to end up a sterndrive?
If it is... the wood that the motor mounts bolt to looks a little skimpy. What thickness you got there?

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I think I remember him saying he was going to use a stroked 350 (383 cid) and I assume an OD with it. I had the same thought as you re: the motor mount provisions.

Also a curiosity is how he has terminated the stringers as knees, up against the transom. I'm sure oops has it worked out, at least I hope he does.

those are 3/4 inch ply.....ive got some up dates coming as soon as i can get the time to post them......(it takes about an hour each up date and i think theres three or four)....in the up dates youll see how it is going to work....im copying the mannufactures layout as far as the motor housing goes....but i added the knees.

ill post them as soon as i can

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

actually as far as the motor mounts im having a delemma that i need your guys help on.....

on the origonal set up,
those stringers that hold the motor cage are actually cut down to form a two step bilge.... between the two stringers, are peices of plywood on the flat. stacked three or four high......they were glassed over...and the motor mounts were lag bolted into them......

this was a major water collection spot with no place for water to drain....ive kinda got it worked out how to keep it dry in there...but its the lag bolts im worried about.....the bolts go thru a glassed over stage and then, three peices of ply, under the glass.....as im not sure exactly where thoes lags will be drilled in.....so how do i seal the lag holes....

when the motor is installed i can have them pre drill...then over drill...then fill with epoxy then re drill....however the mounts are seperate peices of ply...and im worried about possible water gettin thru the lag holes.

im getting really close to installing the sole.....its allready cut and most of the strings are pre glassed, and waiting for the big 1708 double wrap

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

FWIIW oops, I did my mounts in dimensional lumber. I wanted the mount lag cavities to be surrounded by solid wood. After I had glassed over everything, I marked and drilled the lag holes and ran all the stainless steel lag bolts in to "thread" the holes.

I then kept filling each of the holes with CPES until they quit drinking it up. It actually took quite a few applications.

After allowing time for the CPES to cure up, I filled the lag holes (partially) with 3M 4200, set the mount feet and ran the lags in. I just let the 4200 squeeze out where it wanted and let it set.

I feel my holes are both protected should water enter them but more likely, with the 4200, they will never see a hint of moisture.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Why not find an alternative to a naturally porous product if that's the case? Trex decking isn't all that strong by itself, but if fiberglassed with a few layers, I wonder if it would hold up to an inboard without distorting. What about just simply laying up a block of pure fiberglass?

I dunno, the only other thing I could think of using would be making a form with fiberglass and seacast.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I had those blocks also, they were rotten like potting soil. I got rid of them. Made the stringer a little thicker around the engine bay, there are actually 3 pieces of 5/8 ply laminated and then another smaller 12 inch piece where the mount is. My mount is a 3 inch by 3/8 inch thick, by about 12 inches long aluminum angle that is bolted through the stringer with 3 - 7/16 inch ss bolts per side. This method was recommended to me by a guy in Ontario who was tutoring me on my rebuild. I have since seen this type of mount from the factory on other boats. This way I do not have to deal with lag bolts. If you want I can send you some pix, I have the engine out right now, replacing the rear main seal. I am sure this set-up could handle the power you will be using.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Please explain what CPES is. Is there any major difference in 4200 and 5200?

CPES is clear penetrating epoxy sealer

4200 is a polyurethane caulking that is semi-removable when cured

5200 is a polyurethane caulking that once cured can only be removed mechanically.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok.....up date.....where do i start....each day is becoming a blur.....(gotta change those resporator cartridges)

a poster asked about a process on another thread...so.....

glassing small peices is easy when using a wet out table.....you can do two or three peices of cloth or matt at the same time...this way you use less resin and are alot closer to that magical 50/50 resin to glass mix...(optimum stregnth)

it also can speed up the process by a factor of two.....

first make sure you have all the nessary things to start the glassing job.....

picgroup27007.jpg

tee hee.......

seriously.....all items must be ready before you start mixing resin....
the area to be glassed must be cleaned and acetoned

each peice should be pre cut

picgroup27010.jpg

im using a 10 oz csm here....this will be for stringer reinforcement......one set of two inch strips were cut and a set of 5 inch....each strip is approx 25 ins long....

picgroup27011.jpg

the larger 5 inch strips were set on the wet out on the table

picgroup27017.jpg

then wet out..........remember...saturate the glass fully...no more...no less

picgroup27018.jpg

then the smaller two inch strips were placed in the middle of the five inch wet strips

picgroup27019.jpg

just before you place the wet strips you must wet out the area to be glassed

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

after the glass is fully wet out..(and the area to be glassed).... the wet strips can be picked up and placed over the area to be glassed.... in this case...the two inch glass strip is placed next to the stringer/hull joint....and the 5 inch strip overlapps it

picgroup27020.jpg

this way...the glass is reinforcing the glass, it is overlapping, causing a larger glass to hull/stringer surface area......

this is just a two layer layup...three can be done.... but the next two layers will be 1708 and they will be full distance lay ups....(un cut...20 foot long layups)....totally incasing the stringers.
