Re: hull extension in progress with picks

a big thank you going out to mrdjflores for the new keyboard !

i finally got my puter back.....its quick i can type and i can even use the cd rom !

previous to the new keyboard i couldnt type the letter "o" with out the cursoe jumping to the top of the feild......that means you only get one line of text before you over write every thing....it was a real pain in the !!!!!!!!.

so a big thank you....it seems to be a lot better now....

don't mention it, i'm glad everything's back up and running.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Oops,
How often are you going to use the heaters? Just when it's cold out? If you aren't going to be using them all that much, can you just put some sort of a shutoff valve (seacock type valve) on the heater hose where it comes out of the engine and where it goes back in? So, if you aren't using the heater, you can shut off all water circulation in the heater hoses.. then, your temp gauge should read correctly except when you are using the heater...

At least then you'd know the correct temperature most of the time.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

It was a semi successful launch today. The heater works great. The drain plug fitting leaks really bad but on the upside the bilge pump works great. The engine ran bad and the drive has a bad vibration. The boat is slow but we are sure the prop [19] is the wrong one. We got 34mph at 4000 rpm with at least 1/3 throttle to go. We weighed the boat at 4360 lbs on the trailer. The Bright side is the boat works great. It's very stable and runs true. As Johnny said it turns like it's on rails. At full speed you can crank the wheel hard and it just turns. The lake was like glass so we never got the chance to test the ride in the chop but it's heavy and should be smooth. The longer side windows really look good and the boat looks great on the water. The plan is to fix the leaky plug, take the drive off the bayliner and put it on the big boat to hopefully eliminate the vibration and continue to tweak the carb to get the engine running smooth under load. We will be back on the water probably by tuesday with the few kinks worked out. I did make a video but had a tough time driving the bayliner and trying to keep the boat in frame. When I wasn't taking pictures of my thumb and the floor of the bayliner I got some good shots. You'll have to wait for oops to post the video as I have NoKlu how it's done. :D

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok guys....i finally got photobucket working...

but my spell check isnt so bear with me.

lets bring you all up to speed on the last few weeks that the puter has been gone before we get to the water tryals and fault list.

again .....first of all thanks to mrdjflores for the keyboard.....the puter feels like new again and is actually running fast after they re-installed every thing and loaded me up with windows 7.

i was really overjoyed when this came

019.jpg

i had been working my butt off every day trying to get the boat done.
i was at the local marine boat store every day for little things like exhaust flappers and gaskets....ect

the staff there and i have became great friends.....so good in fact......i have my own space at the counter

008.jpg

007.jpg

i was told several times that "because of the height of the risers.....i would waste my money buying exhaust flappers"

016.jpg

imho....money well wasted

017.jpg

after going thru all this expence......why not buy a little insurance?

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Where did you get that heater? Very nice, I want!

Cannot wait to see this running and on the water!

we have a place here called princess auto.....its kinda like harbour freight as far as i can tell.....they came on sale for $189. down from 275.
that was the biggest heater they had at 38,000 btu and three speeds on the fan.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

while i was waiting for the hoist bay to come open....i just started tinkering with stuff.....i installed the heater....this is an upside down pic

018.jpg

then it was finally time to get into the bay and re install the motor and run it up again

the drive was re bolted on for cooling purposes

052.jpg

kinda cool finally seeing the beast on the muffs

053.jpg

this was the second systems run up.....at this time the engine had just been pulled and the flywheel had been replaced with the correct zero balance one....so this run up was one that we were actually able to see how it did over time

054.jpg

we found that the balance/vibration issue was gone......after a little while.....we hit 4 grand on the muffs and zero vibration....yeee haaa !
we did however, find that the carb was running very rich. so we decided to re jet to a smaller size....066 in the secondarys.
you can see here that its burning black

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

one of the small problems with extending the hull, was that the windsheild now looked out of proportion to the hull....kinda put the cockpit waaay up forward.....i also found that i liked the longer windows on the bayliner. the long windows really took the wind away.
i had been working on extending the wings for over a year....so now was the perfect oppertunity.

010.jpg

i wanted to bring the wings back a good 8 feet....this is a mock of the lines.

009.jpg

it just seemed to make sence

011.jpg

everybody that saw the mock up said...."thats it"

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the windsheild was removed again

020.jpg

then the wing windows were removed......once the main windscreen was lifted off the boat....the wings just slide down from the bottom

022.jpg

i still need the angle of the side wings.....just to keep the correct look....

021.jpg

i removed the glass and kept it as a template for the front bottom cut.

023.jpg

i needed to keep the main wing peice that attached to the main window....but the top and bottom span had to go....

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

yep....i used the hack saw on this one....slo...long and arm building....lol

027.jpg

now the real thinking game began.......how to attach my 10 mm channel of alum to the existing frame?

026.jpg

i had allready decided to attach the top channel with a super auto body glue used to attach steel to steel...but i had to align the window perfectly !

i decided to cut half the old alum off the bottom and let the new material go all the way up front.....but i needed the inside portion to hold the glass...

030.jpg

if this sounds complicated....its because it is.

031.jpg

the wings were then test fitted for the bottom channel to line up.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

i was really flying that day........cutting....fabricating....

it was going really well....i started using the grinder with a cutoff wheel...and was really doing delicate cuts with precision.

035.jpg

it was all coming togeather.

044.jpg

..the bottom alignment cuts were perfect..

042.jpg

top notches again perfect.....again this was really delicate work with the grinder's cut off wheel.

043.jpg

this would have been my final cut of the day.....everything was done.....just polishing to do....then murphy showed up..

038.jpg

the grinder clipped an edge and twisted the peice......that channel is 40 bucks a peice !

disgusted....i left for the night.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the next day, i had to drill the holes in the base of the bottom channel. this will be screwed on to the hull cap.

045.jpg

snaps had to be riveted in the upper cap.....this is for future travel and rain canopys.......

047.jpg

the back of these rivits had to be ground off flush with the interior of the channel.....any contact with the glass on metal and it would crack the glass.

everything was double checked for fit

048.jpg

then it was re-removed for a final polish

051.jpg

the polishing was long and tedious.........but it looks great!

050.jpg

i thought i had pics of the finished frame.......but they must not have copied to photo bucket....

ill get some more detailed pics of the actual frame.......total cost including glass was around 400 for 8 foot wings.......thats really cheap compaired to buying new ones.

Sweet. Real tedious work but worth the effort in the savings.

What did you end up using to polish the frames. I need to do my frames this spring...

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the day before the launch was a hectic one as i spent a few hours running around getting plates for both the bilgliner and the big boat.....as well i had to mount the seats and install the heater switch.......the heater didnt come with an explanation as to the wires....no plus or neg tag on the wires.....just 4 colors....so it required some serious investigation before i hooked it up.

at around 6 pm and only one seat in the boat.....we gave up and decided to launch on sunday....this turned out to be a great move as it gave us more time on the water.

it was supposed to rain on sunday....i was worried cause no one likes boating in the rain.......but we were spared.......after some playing around with the trailer lights......we were hooked up and on the way

069.jpg

doesnt the wing windows give it a totally different look?

most of the pics of the launch are on the video and i will be posting the link to that as soon as i figgure out how to up load to youtube.

we launched the boat at the grand hotel boat launch downtown (by rosies pub) it is the only boat launch i know of that is deep enough to launch right now.

061.jpg

we actually had about 5 or more people that saw the boat and started asking qusetions.....they hadent seen anything like it ......the fire dept even showed up for the event !

066.jpg

the boat is heavy and sits low in the water....but still not bad.

064.jpg

i fired up the motor.....and we were off !

060.jpg

the water was flat calm and perfect for this kind of test....there still a few kinks to work out....and as you can see....i forgot to hook up the pitot tube to the drive leg....so the speedo didnt work
