Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Okay, call me stupid, but a flywheel is a flywheel essentially. The obvious differences are bolt patterns, weight, diameter and # of teeth, offset, etc.

Unless the flywheel was out of balance, or couldn't be properly positioned on the crank, what's the difference that would cause the need for a 350 crank vs. a 454 crank...other than weight....or is that it? Too much weight on that end of the engine is what is causing the vibration?

I'd love to know...so many nuances!

I thought 454s like a lot of big blocks were exteranlly balanced where the 350 is interally balanced making the 454 flywheel off balance to a 350?

Correct. Having the proper one makes a huge difference in engine longevity especially in a marine application where there is continuous engine operation at high engine speeds. The 454 CI Chevy Big Block is the only production Big Block that was externally balanced. Small Block Fords and the 400CI Small Block Chevy are also externally balanced.

Maybe I read this wrong, but I have a Ford guy here who swears 460s (later) and a lot of other big blocks were externally balanced?

I should have specified. The Big Block Chevy Mark IV 454 is the only production Chevrolet big block to be externally balanced.

The 460 is a ford Big block. I was basically just talking Chevy blocks but mentioned the Small Block Ford, Windsor block, as an example of externally balanced motors.

I don't want to veer away from Oops's SBC motor too far. He should have a neutrally balanced flywheel and dampener on his motor since the crank was balanced internally. If it were the 383 stroker though likely he would need external balancing since that motor uses the 400CI SBC's crank in the 350 block.

thats correct...i wished i would have got pics of the weight on the flywheel.....the three fifty is known as a zero balance wheel. or internaly balanced.....hence....zero balance on the wheel.

ill have pics of the progress up in a minit

Something like "more money than brains" comes to mind. If you own a $50k boat it would be prudent to take good care of it. Consider it cheap insurance.

Can't hardly wait to hear how your goes Oops. If that bastard Murphy shows up feel free to shoot him in the hind quarters for us.

Wow!! Lots has been going on. Been away for awhile, busy with the Olympics and missed lots of progress. Looking great, looking forward to the updates and the day it sees the water. Looks like you are still in the same shop, glad it is working out.

Have a great day

Rob.

Thanks guys, that nugget of information has been squirreled away in the back of my brain for future reference. Like I tell my kids. Learn something new everyday.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Hey Oops

It's good to see your progress on the boat. It looks great!

Something I noticed and thought I might mention, is the way your battery switch is mounted, it appears the back of the switch is open and exposed. If this is the case, I would be concerned about something (steering linkage?) contacting the posts and shorting out the battery.

It's probably not very likely, but I thought I would mention it.

Anyways good luck with the launch! I'm really looking forward to the video.
