Re: hull extension in progress with picks

well,,,,it was quite a week.

the goal was to run the motor up long enough to look for leaks....test all the systems and evaluate the motor for the water trials.

well first some things had to happen....

the gas tank needed to be removed and a new angled fill tube be welded into place.
i moved the deck gas fill station to the edge of the fromt deck.....this was to make more clear suntanning space on the fore deck

asembly-shifter-rigging120.jpg

our neighbor that ownes the starter alternator shop did the welding. the tank was reinstalled in the boat.

the drive was installed

asembly-shifter-rigging119.jpg

we had a lot of putzing around with the shifter...as the entire system was new, it took us three hours to get it aligned and shifting properly.

finally it was time.

asembly-shifter-rigging121.jpg

filling the tank was kind of a surreal moment for me.....lol

asembly-shifter-rigging123.jpg

the big boat was moved out side for the first time in a year

asembly-shifter-rigging124.jpg

after that things got kind of busy......cause thats when that bastard murphy showed up. !

we started the motor....it fired right up...instantly...we discovered a small fuel leak at the carb inlett. no big deal.

we tryed to fix it but discovered a faulty fitting. the leak is
minor so we re started the boat....several water leaks appered....again...no big deal....

however when we reved the engine, it had a super bad vibration. this can mean only one thing...!

there was a slight possibility the drive was toast....so off came the drive.....started the again.....and the vibration was still there......

a year ago when i was building the motor i had flywheel problems......the engine was out of my automatic cube van.....a marine engine needs a steel flywheel....i looked everywhere and finally found one.....i was assured that it was the correct one for the application......but its not !

that means.......the motor must come back out and either the flywheel replaced or re balanced.

the good news is......it only takes a little while to do it...

the water tests were scheduled for sunday after the canada usa gold metal game...... but now its postponed for a while !

Looks great! Sorry to hear about the flywheel problem but it's always the little stuff. Maybe the "assuror" needs to pay for the correct flywheel. Good luck!

Talk about tunnel vision. You forgot to mention the VICTORY! WOOHOO!!!!
Are you 100% positive it's the balance that's causing the vibration?

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

we have been going pretty steady at the shop ....boating season is fast approaching !

after the gold medal game on sunday..
(congrats to the USA team for a great game and a silver medal)
..i went to the shop and started the engine removal procedure.

asembly-shifter-rigging126.jpg

i had some minor water leaks...including an exhaust water leak....so as you can see, the top of the riser had to come off.

well....that got as far as the Olympic closing ceremonies !...lol.

speaking of the Olympic closing ceremonies.....did you guys see my name on the big screen?
a giant oops! right at the end before the bands came?....lol

any how.....monday morning the motor came out....total time ....about 45 mins.

asembly-shifter-rigging127.jpg

the back end including the coupler was pulled.

asembly-shifter-rigging129.jpg

that left the flywheel.....

asembly-shifter-rigging128.jpg

i took the flywheel that i had purchased in a scrap yard last year, to the guy that rebuilt the motor....explained the problem....and he instantly said that it was a flywheel from a 454...(bbc) not the 350 that the guy swore he just pulled it off !

the part should arrive wednesday morning.....this means..(if it does....and the land systems run up is ok).....

water trials this weekend !
