Re: hull extension in progress with picks

thanks for all your care and concern guys.....

and as said....we know he did it....we just dont have any real proof...

the p/o of the drive and the motor is a friend of mine....we had quite a few sody pops togeather when we cut the deal....he is a good guy......we are trying to match the serial numbers as we speak...

that will tell everything.....

the mech that looked at the bellows and bell said "these things happen all the time in a shop).....you are working on a motor, you need a part, you dont have one......you take it from another motor and replace it later.
i feel he used my bell on another boat and gave me this one, and then was planning on charging me on the parts.....thats a qiuck buck for him....

i never woulda guessed it from this guy.......but people change......

if i get proof from the p/o of the transom bell.....and i can see or get the numbers off this one......im going to let the whole boating comunity know about it.......it is fruad and theft...plain and simple.

im still pi$$ed about it.

i worked late again on the cap.....just finishing the fairing on the sides and the consoles......im allmost done and hope to have it painted soon....

after the paint, i can seal the cap on, then start wiring the gastank, bow and docking lights. then the sterring......and the front end will be done

im getting the parts for the bell today and will be installing them today.
i have a wake tower to install on a newer bayliner tonight......(ill work all night if i have to....i promised the the owner i would have his boat for saturday.....but the tower wont be delivered till late tonight.

cheers guys and thanks for the encouragement.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Oops, I am sorry to hear about that guy turning out to be a creep.

Isn't this the same guy who cost you an extra thousand buck a while back?

Seems to me he's been a snake for some time, just kept his rattle pretty quiet.

I think you're doing the right thing getting your ducks in a row, comparing notes with the P/O, planning to out him to the community.

Once word of this gets out, I am sure he'll find his standing in the community affected and along with it, his revenue.

Glad to hear it's coming along so nicely too, hope to see the maiden voyage video on photobucket, that would rock.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

hi roller dave....thanks for the kind words.

this is the guy that was supposed to cut out the hole for the out drive...

it took me 3 weeks to get an appointment...after 3 days of him having the boat....i went to get it back....(bond-o and don's told me to get my boat away from that hack ! ) he was driving around with my boat on his hitch trying to sub-contract out the job he said he wanted to do...( he was very specific saying that he wanted to cut the hole.....saying it had to be perfect)

he was trying to sub it out to fiberglass shops.......heck....im a fiberglass shop !

as for the vid of the launch.......iboaters noklu, yar and tackelwasher will be running in three chase boats.....my bilge liner....tackels big tinny....and yars boat.......tackelwasher will also be running the camera for the vid.
it is also slightly possible that rob j will be here, and if at all possible...(if the planets get lined up ) that ondarvr can take the helm to evaluate the boat and make plans for weight distrubition..

(when a new boat comes off the line...never tested...they try many motor combinations....and move things around i the boat to get it just right....some times they add lead weights to one side or in the bow)

since ondarvr has extencive experince in new boat construction and has driven allmost every boat out there.....he will be able to give me pro advice as to the charectistics of the hull.

lets just hope that the launch happens sooner than later!

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

When I was teenager I had a small ski boat that I kept moored out front during the summer, one winter we had the boat stored indoors at a local resort marina. The next spring when we went to get the boat, he had swapped the outboard motor, it was a little obvious as I had a very nice Evinrude on it and he put a beat up Johnson of the same HP on it. He claimed that was my motor (the Johnson) and new nothing about any motor swap, we told him we would be back in three days and if the correct motor wasn't on it the police would be involved.
Three days later I went back and what do you know, my Evinrude was back on the boat.

Ooops! do what you have to to get this guy. Enough said on that. I and all of the others cannot wait to see the vid of your creation finally running on the water. Better luck has to come your way. Keep up the incredible work.

sometimes serial numbers aren't just stamped, they are magnetized.
sprinkle a few iron filings over the spot and tap with a hammer to settle them, often you can read the numbers even when they're filed off.

there might also be a second marking inside the bell.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Thanks for the tip jonesg, we'll check for that today. The parts for the bell are backordered so we got another snag but there's tons of finishing work to do before the cap gets painted. I took some rouge and a polishing ball in a high speed drill to the aluminum windshield frame and it's coming out like a mirror. Tedious work but oops! is blown away at the finish even though there is a few pits in it. I can polish the old frame to a higher gloss than the new frame ??? I guess you could make it like new but it's gonna look great even with a few "character" marks in it. Wonder if I could buff it and then cover it with some sort of clear coat to keep it from going grey again? Yes I got pics now just gotta get oops! to do the pictorial update !!!

Awesome!

I always like to keep something with character when I can, the new sometimes just seems so sterile, dead.

If you guys are a bit behind on the pics, don't feel bad, I started telling my own tale, and being inspired by Oops's saga I started at the beginning.

I'm technically a year behind right now, and I've just started!

I'm sure glad I waded through all those pages, it was better than reality TV.

Whenever you post 'em, I'll be here.

I suspect you will have difficulty getting a readable number, but it is worth a shot.

Depending how far you want to pursue this, a metalurgical x-ray (the type used to QC pipe welding) will almost be guaranteed to reveal the number. That's why serial #'s are stamped instead of being cast or any other method - the stamping disturbs the metal far deeper than the depth of the stamping itself, and this is revealed by x-rays even when ground off.

It would be expensive (into the hundreds of $'s), but would be positive proof of what the serial number is.

Another method you could try would be to polish up ground area and then have it acid etched. There is a very high likelihood of revealing the number by this means too. Again, it's a question of how far you want to pursue the matter and money...

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I got lucky finding gauges for the boat. I picked up a 7 piece set of Teleflex Sahara gauges for $140 new. Even with shipping and exchange they will be under $200 cdn at the door. Half the canadian price. I let oops! know I got him gauges for his Bday and he asked if I got the cool ones so he's pumped. I wish it never took so friggen long to get here though as it takes 3 weeks.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Fleabay. Smokin deal from a first time seller with no feedback so no one was bidding. I made an offer on them lower than his opening bid and he accepted it a few days ago but he relisted the gauges. They came up again this morning with no bids so I got them cheap.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

That is exactly why I do not let anyone touch my car, truck, or boat. I would rather do it my self and learn buy making a mistake or two. I am sorry that happened to you opps!. I would do all I could to prove what he did. If you have to spend a little money to do it I know it would pay off in the end if you sue that sorry con artist!! Good luck with the paint, you are almost there. I can not wait until you are done so you can show pictures. I want to know if I am right about the theam of your boat!:D

Yeah.. the forensic techniques for recovering the numbers exist, just depends on how far you want to go and how much you want to pay. When a serial number is stamped into metal it displaces the metal on top of the piece, but metal below that is affected as well (similar to work hardening). The acid etch technique polishes the metal smooth to make it easy to see then the acid affects the metal restructured by the stamp differently than the surrounding metal.. this will make the stamp show again. ** Warning.... if you do this yourself it's almost certain it will be inadmissible in court. Dunno rules of evidence for CA, but you probably have to let the cops do that.

Reading removed serial numbers is something done an awful lot by cops down here... they may have a quick/cheap/good way to do it up there too.

Also, call mercruiser and it may be that they can look up serial numbers on the rest of the parts in the assembly.. if one part came from the factory as part of an assembly rather than being sold as a replacement, there's a good chance they can ID the whole assembly by year.

Dropped by for a minute on my way home last night.

Oops said he'd be posting soon with updates. Motor still isn't in. He showed me the "mouse ate it" bellows and the other parts. I will tell everyone I know not to use the guy.
