Re: hull extension in progress with picks

There's been not much fabbing being done so other than a few pics of the engine hanging from the chain there's not much new to see. The engine parts issues have been worked out and will get painted soon. I was able to find some aluminum we can use for the wing window extensions.I found a local window shop that uses it for shower door frames. Fully polished and cheap. oops! mouth just hung open when I brought the sample piece to the shop. Minus the glass, the windows will be under $50 for both sides. Motivation has been an issue in the last while, he's gettin tired of workin on this effen boat and wants it done. His words not mine. It's oops birthday this month and I want to get him a gauge set so if anybody has a good deal on a 7 gauge pkg pm me.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

lol..... ill get pics up asap......i got tons......we are about a month behind in the pic updates......

so ill catch us up quick.....id do some now....but i got a alpha drive to sell tomm morning.....

well.......had a lousy day on the boat today.......with a minor milestone reached...

i was concentrating on the various parts of the motor and getting them painted and put on.......starter, alt, ect.....ect.......btw.....the block is now black and hanging on the crane.

i installed the transom assembly tonight ans mucked up !

the transom bell and housing (the outer part of an i/o housing) was sitting around and waiting to be installed........when i got tired of prepping other parts for install, i decided to mount the bell and inner transom plate (thats the outer gymball housing and the inner plate that the steering mounts to)..

well long ago i glassed in the cutout area.....i decided to add some 4200 to the area just for good measure....

after doing that i added the seal to the bell housing......but the seal had a weird twist in it.....(this was mercrusier parts) i could not get the seal....(a thick foam gasket) to lay flat in the groove of the housing ridge.......after many an effort of 4200, gasket tack......i decided to contact cement the gasket in place........it finally worked.

when the outer bell was installed, i placed the inner frame.
thru the frame was the trim hoses, the shift cable and 2 aets of wires.
we;; after it was all in place and secure i noticed, that the 2 sets of wires were pinched.......they had a special hole to go thru and i pot them in the wrong hole !

so.....to make a long story short..... i jury rigged a line fro m the bow hook to the outer bell (because i didnt want to disturb the gasket glue on the outer bell).......and released the pressure of the bolts on the inner frame.
i was just about to fix the wires when i realized i didnt have any solder to fix the wires.....so i just left it till tommorow morning,,,,,,,,,

so.....it was a day/night of minor accolimplishments and major trimphs but also another step backwards.......:mad:

bit it is getting closer to the launch.....

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Oops - when I installed my transom assembly, I had some leftover bellows adhesive that I used to hold the gasket in place inside of the groove. It worked very well to hold it there..

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I did exactly the same thing with the wires. I was afraid I'd destroyed them :)

For my gasket I used some 4200.. the transom assembly sealing surface was a bit uneven due to missing paint and a bit of corrosion, so I cleaned that up and 4200 glued the gasket in place before I mounted it.

I'd say it worked well, but there's a small leak I haven't found yet, so that may have been a problem. But I'll check the shift shaft bushing next.

Your project is like any other... you get 90 percent of the way done, then the remaining 10 percent of the work swells out until it's another 90 percent.

Hang in there, and post pics when ya can..

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

First of all, oops! is absolutly amazing!, what a journey!
I bought a 17' glass (no idea what kind) w/ 1968 65h johnson v4 for $100 with trailer. Got it running this spring, now considering a rebuild. I would do it in a heartbeat if I had another boat to use, but I'm fishing 3-4 times a week. Nice to see ericgreen giving his MN support(I live near Hinckley).
Keep up the great work, can't wait to see the finish line!:D

its stupid that they make that gasket with a twist in it....i think they do it so it lays flat in the package....i kept looking for the "trick to make it lay flat on the housing...but to no avail....but i finally got ti in....with contact cement....lol

and the 10 % is true enough erik getting to be a real pita !....more on that to come !
