Re: hull extension in progress with picks

thanks for the replys on the tower guys ....keep them coming....

those mock ups are great....

i really like the look of the one with the tower place aft......
however.....since it is a functional wake tower.......the aft positition will tend to pull the bow up on take off.....so the boat would never see plane when pulling a skier or boarder....and with the mid size prop, plowing water will not be feasable.

the mid area posisition looks good......but again....too far aft for proper plaining.

as far as the windsheild goes........i will actually be making it longer.......
the wind sheild will come to approx where the support risers are for the tower......these will also be at the same angle as the tower risers......that way everything has shape. the reason for the longer windsheild....is that the boat got wet and windy with anything but into the wind. my girl used to cower under the front corner of the wind screen when we were getting across a 2-3 foot chop in higher wind......this didnt happen in the baykiner with a longer wind screen.....so im incorperating it into this design.

i will also be making the tower just a we bit taller...(if i keep the design)...the current design is too small to comfortably walk under.

the mock up in the shop is really growing on people....in fact the boat looks bare with out it.

im really looking forward to the guys coming.....all that talent in the same room.... with some beer....that means ideas !

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

What do you think about using polyester? Its so much cheaper then epoxy. Do you think tabing onto the deck with 3 layers of polyester will be strong enough?
I could cut the deck back 6" then use the same piece back when i am done then i can tab to the actual hull.
Or can i still tab to the deck with polyester? do i need to use acetone or anything to clean the polyester? as well as rough it up for every layer?

Does epoxy require less work, you said you need to clean it with soapy water with a brush before laying another layer?
If epoxy is less work it seems it is worth it but i don't mind more work for less money.

I probably won't be there until later, leaving after work. Thursday works best, but if we get there earlier, I will call.

Have a great day,

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the information in this thread is pricless. with ondarvr commenting and all of our motor gurus....there are facts in this thread that can help any one and everyone.....IF they take the time to read it...!

as far as finishing the boat.....i really dont think im that far off..!....

i keep thinking that its just about done...in fact....i could throw the motor in it tommorow and be cruising by the weekend!.....(sitting on a milk crate !:D )

but there is just a few more things to build.....then the paint and uph...!!!.

im really getting stoaked.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Hey Oops & Co.,

I am bummed that I am going to miss out on the festivities:mad:. This whole work thing really gets in the way of my fun time!

As Pinkham89 noted above this thread is a beast, but a really neat thing happens when you read it cover to cover. You feel like you know everyone that has been here from the start even though they have never heard of you!! It is cool mix of technical and fun.

Back to topic....You are going raise the "wing" a bit more? I think that the guys are right that it looks a little out of proportion with the windshield as it is now. I don't know if having it back further is really going to make a huge difference to pulling up boarders/skiers. My little 17' just has the 2 eyelets on the transom and it seems to do just fine. The old style ski pole used to be close to the back too. Maybe some corona ballast right in the bow would do the trick (or trick you):p.

I hate to admit it, but I am pretty handy with a welder and do have a small mig if you need some assistance with conduit/framing. Oh, one more thing, my neighbour has a graphics press for doing custom #'s, decals, etc......I am thinking that he may be a good resource soon!

Ok, I am done rambling! Have a wobbly pop for me!

Cheers,
Yar.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about having the wing/whatever closer to the stern. The boat is sooo long that the cantilever effect would be negated by the weight of the boat vs. the load being pulled.

My biggest concern would be the strength of the thing so that
1. it doesn't rip out of the cap
2. it doesn't snap from the forces being applied to it.

The aluminum tube 4 point style that is common has to be inherently strong just due to the design, though I think I'd want something bracing/reinforcing it behind the fiberglass it is bolted to.

The wing style ( forward swept ) design is strong by the simple force of angles ( pressure being applied more directly down the length of the posts trying to jam in further into the hulls cap vs. something rear swept that is just trying to be ripped out of the hull if there were no rear bracing pushing it back forward ( inverted bimini style bracing ).

Now, something along the lines of a strong tube with height adjustment holes ( telescoping ) could solve the height issues, especially if you can keep it a double tube design and have the secondary tube drop down past the cap and into the bowels of the hull, but that would depend on certain geometries and other considerations ( a roll cage comes to mind all of a sudden ).

To keep the theme of the boat alive in the wake board tower might require some extra thought. I dunno Ward, for me anyway, this is a tough one ( but then again, I'm not the mastermind behind the scenes...you are! ). I think it's going to come down to your vision of the thing, and then as you progress with it, the proper tweaks will come along the way.

I would suggest considering narrowing the top a bit if you plan to outfit it with any wake board storage hardware so the access will be easier and you won't drop stuff overboard as easily.

gord and rob if you are still up pm me asap.

so im gonna hgold on the tower for a bit...(a week or two )till i can get the top done (cap) its allmost time to get the bayliner in to fix it so i can sell it.....(a quick 2 weel re fit....stringers and deck)......so the big boat might have to get done to the point that i have to wait on the motor install.

i have some pics of the latest work and also some t plate cut outs from a project we are doing.....(my buddie had the t plate cut and the sheild installed in an hour....i put resin in the cut out and we had the motor in in the time it took to play a hockey game!

(by the way....we won.....swept the series....sorry kamloops,....tri cities, vancouver and calgary....heh heh heh !)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

So I get into work to find a post-it-note on my keyboard.

Just see the yellow thing and figure it's a note from someone else wanting money, or someone else complaining about something or another.

Nope.

Note says

"Hello from oops! sister"

Cool, huh?

Robj and I are going to be at Freddy's at 6.

I have no idea what he looks like so maybe I'll just hold up an iboats sign.

Do we have a secret handshake?

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Well its just taken me 3 days to read all 111 pages of this thread and all I can say is WOW!

I 'acquired' a 14' boat a couple of weeks ago that has been exposed to the Scottish elements for 4 years, I decided the deck needed to be replaced so ripped that up and found that the stringers also needed replacing! At that point I nearly took it back to its former home and let it die, but reading this thread has given me the conviction to go ahead and give it a go!

So all I can say is thanks to you OOPS! and all the other guys on here that I have learned so much from without even turning my grinder on!
