Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Just curious about somthing,we were always taught to NEVER,EVER cut a straight line.we were always taught that there is more strength in a "V" cut ,or a "w" cut, this si meant to spread the stress over a less concentrated area,it also leaves less room for flex, torque and impact stress, like when you jump a wake or catch a roller the wrong way,I've only done 2 splices as we call them, both were done in seperate parts of the country by to different builders and both said to never cu a straight line it will always crack or flex over the splice and I can pretty much agree ,great job though! any thuoghts on what the old craftsmen said?

one of the first things i investigated was about what type of cut i needed to do this........a series of "v's" and a missmatched long plank cut ..(like a hard wood floor) were discussed and investicated........both methods were scrapped because the additional stregnth the fiberfglass layers would add....as well as the additional stringers.....would make the actual cut...a non-issue.

the hull is now 3x as thick as it was before....including at least one full wrap on the exterior....and 2 full wrapps of 1708 on the interior.....thats not to mention the csm or the veil added for good measure.

before i gellcoated it......the hull was winched up on to a trailer....the full weight of the boat was placed directly on the extension joint......not even a creak......also the was jacked up on the transom.....woth the full weight of the craft on the bow and the transom......not a problem......after that it was stregnthened some more .........

if you have time i highly suggest reading the full thread....i know is really long.....but you will see that the stress placed on the joint is a non issue....as the hull is now truly one peice of glass.

btw....welcome to i boats....this place is about the best there is for any type of boat questions........and as you can see by the above conversation.....it is also a really good place to meet new friends.

cheers

Well, depending on weather patterns where you go, you might be warmer farther north depending on where you are. Minnesota can get as cold as parts of the arctic, and usually certain locations in Alaska are warmer than here.

It's not too cold to breathe most of the time... it's just cold enough that I wouldn't want to be out working on the car or something that required me to lay on the ground or work without gloves.

The cold keeps out the riffraff. :)

And the bugs. The wife hates bees, and she wants to move to warmer weather...she just can't see the wisdom of living in a seasonal clime. Fixed the snowblower today. It was cold enough to freeze the clutch cable for the auger on my single stage. Ended up having to flush it with alcohol to get the trace amounts of moisture that had gotten into it from a bend that had cracked. I'll need to replace that later, but for now it's fine. I shoveled the drive last night...it was around -5F. Dressed for the weather and moving kept me plenty warm. The nice thing about this weather though...I made fried rice tonight. I cook the rice and then cool it off before I fry it with the other ingredients ( keeps it from becoming mush ) and I just slapped it on a cookie sheet and set it out on the snow. 15 minutes later and it was cooled enough to work with. Couldn't do that in the freezer..it doesn't get that cold! :D

Yeah, love the concept. Pay to get rid of a guilty conscience, but does nothing to reduce "greenhouse emissions". I'm waiting for the next big "disaster". When I was a kid, it was the coming of the next "ice age", now we are going to live on a burning ball of fire.....the planet has a fever! And the only cure is....more cowbell! :D

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Only thing about my area is that the weather fluctuates so much this time of year. Friday I was in a T-shirt when I took the kids to climb Pinnacle Mt. This morning it's 16 F & it should be 70 again come the weekend:) It never stays cold around here for long until after the 1st of the year.

Looks like we have some time to kill oops. How is that shop hunt coming along? You think you may something this winter, or does it look we won't see any progress til spring?

Yeah, I've been avoiding being outside. It's painfully cold if you do anything for any length of time. I'm mostly avoiding getting sick, the driveway can wait until more snow falls and blocks it or until we get up to a warm temp like 25 or so. I have one of the really old early 80s snowblowers, and I've sheared the pins on the augur twice already. Lots of torque in that little engine.

I'm taking a warm water vacation on Jan 10... one week aboard a 65 foot metal sailboat in the Bahamas :) Mmmmmmmm

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

This winter has been hitting the car starting hard ( not personally, the 1000 CCA battery I have in my Dakota takes care of Winter start ups no problem ).

But, my brother can't get his Volvo started, neither could my friend or his kid get their cars started ( explorer and neon respectively ). Battery sales are going to go well this month.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

red......what a crazy thing.....ive owned my diesel truck for over 4 years.....in all that time i have never had a block heater......i ve never needed it !

two years ago i was in a place called williams lake....it was 42 below......truck wouldnt start....i needed a tiger torch under the oil pan for over 3 hours before the oil was warm enough to be able ot turn over the motor.....all the while i was tricle charging the batteries......

this year alone ive spent 12 hours total trying to boost the truck......

so i go to my buddies place....i say...."i wanna get an in line block heater"......he says my truck has a block heater....i say "ive crawled over it and have never seen a block heater.....nuthin comin out the block".........he says....."its a diesel...! its gotta have one".........i say..."its a west coast truck.....and it must not have come with one...because ive looked at the block and have never seen one"......

he says....."give me your keys"...........

no less than one minit later....he comes back in the place and says the cord is now sticking out my hood...!

after 4 years i finally get to plug in my truck.....man it starts good at minus 30.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Heh, I know how you feel Ward. I swore up and down that my 97 dakota only had an O2 sensor after the cat. I was up and down that damn exhaust looking for the upstream sensor. I finally found it when I physically ran my hands around the whole pipe and bumped into it. The wiring was tucked nicely up and over the transmission. I was looking for a wiring connection more loosely fitting, so I never looked close enough at it....but if you had been there, I would have swore that the truck didn't have that sensor! :D

First thing I noticed in my wifes car was the electrical cord for the block heater coiled up on the drivers side fender well under the hood. Haven't had to use it yet, but it's nice knowing its there. Got one in the Dakota too.

before I got my ram I had a nissan with a v6, it diddnt like to start in the cold. so before I got a block heater, i would take a 100w light bulb and hang it under the hood near the block. better then nothin... I have never had a problem with the ram.. (but its gasoline, not diesel)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

not here, we got another 6 inches today. Fortunately it was the light fluffy, easy to shovel stuff. My single stage took care of the "hump" without faltering.

Any progress on a shop yet Ward?

Ditto here. Woke up New Years day to a snowfall warning. The weekend does not look any better either.

I wanna go fishing.
