Re: hull extension in progress with picks
Re: hull extension in progress with picks
one of the first things i investigated was about what type of cut i needed to do this........a series of "v's" and a missmatched long plank cut ..(like a hard wood floor) were discussed and investicated........both methods were scrapped because the additional stregnth the fiberfglass layers would add....as well as the additional stringers.....would make the actual cut...a non-issue.
the hull is now 3x as thick as it was before....including at least one full wrap on the exterior....and 2 full wrapps of 1708 on the interior.....thats not to mention the csm or the veil added for good measure.
before i gellcoated it......the hull was winched up on to a trailer....the full weight of the boat was placed directly on the extension joint......not even a creak......also the was jacked up on the transom.....woth the full weight of the craft on the bow and the transom......not a problem......after that it was stregnthened some more .........
if you have time i highly suggest reading the full thread....i know is really long.....but you will see that the stress placed on the joint is a non issue....as the hull is now truly one peice of glass.
btw....welcome to i boats....this place is about the best there is for any type of boat questions........and as you can see by the above conversation.....it is also a really good place to meet new friends.
cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks
Just curious about somthing,we were always taught to NEVER,EVER cut a straight line.we were always taught that there is more strength in a "V" cut ,or a "w" cut, this si meant to spread the stress over a less concentrated area,it also leaves less room for flex, torque and impact stress, like when you jump a wake or catch a roller the wrong way,I've only done 2 splices as we call them, both were done in seperate parts of the country by to different builders and both said to never cu a straight line it will always crack or flex over the splice and I can pretty much agree ,great job though! any thuoghts on what the old craftsmen said?
