Re: hull extension in progress with picks

climbed back on the bote tonight..........

because of work....it was the first time in 8 days...the longest strech it has ever been without working on it.......

took me a while to get back doin it.......

i released the angle iron holding the transom to the hull......

and started to ruff and scuff the hull for the final huge glass layup...20 feet by 50 ins......x3

burnt another grinder.....i have to get up at 4 am to do a 12 hour drive tommorow.....then come back to town and finalize a weekend sale...so again...i wont get back on it till monday.......the deadline keeps slipping away

Well, at least in your case, the customer should be able to be a little understanding with the delays ;)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

due to business trips.... its been over a week since i was last on the boat...

last night i climbed back on.......what a huge job this is.....oh well...gotta keep plugging away......

with the transom installed and the braces removed....its time for the final large layup....stem to stern.....then the stringers woll go in......

because i was so long away from the boat....all the glass had to be ruff & scuffed......it took me 5 hours just to get half done......

picgroup19007.jpg

with this pic you can see the legnth of the extension section and the new transom.......that hairy thing in the bottom corner is csm

picgroup19006.jpg

here she is from the bow...you can see the straight chines......the white stuff in the hull is grinding dust..........the hull was totally swept out 1 hour before this picture was taken......so you can imagine the amount of dust the grinder kicks up............(some of us here are knee deep in grinding dust).......

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

i snapped a few picks for my buddie jody....

picgroup19010.jpg

i was told this was the same resin they use at the local boat manufacturers...

(campion...ect)....that means its the really cheep stuff....! :D

to all who dont know....manufacturers typically use the cheapest resin they can get their hands on for smaller type craft.....poly is very strong stuff any how......they might add some purer resin to stregnthen the batch)

picgroup19009.jpg

this is unwaxed resin..........the waxed stuff will be for a top coat.

picgroup19008.jpg

ill will be hitting the project hard this weekend........

a full layer of glass stem to stern.....thats 80 sq feet of layup at a single time...i need to do three of thoes.....thats one whole wack o glassin...!!!!
ill start today....then prep for the stringer instlation........

since the old stringers were mush , a template could not be made from them. that means i have to devise a scribe type method of the inner hull....ill be posting detailed information on how to do that very soon......now ....back to grinding....

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I didn't have any stringers left in mine either. Ran two string lines from bow to stern at two feet apart( distance of old stringers) at the height of the floor. At mutiple points along the hull ran string lines acrossed at same height of floor. measured down at the ponts of intersecting lines, subtracted height of floor and bam had the new measuremnets for the stringers. On a side not if you have to bevel the edge of the stringer to fit next to the hull take that into account.

hope it helps.

looks nice by the way.

thank you for the suggestion.....ill be using a post and scribe type system....

this was a trial run done about a month ago...

picgroup6033.jpg

you can see the pencil lines of the hull on the plywood.

picgroup6034.jpg
.....

it still needs to be devoloped a bit more....but it worked good for a trial.....

one of the minor problems im anticipating...is the bow will be higher with the hull extension...that means if i use the old floor lines...the deck will be slanted towards the bilge...........that means passengers will be walking up hill when traveling stern to bow.

the center of gravity in the craft will move and i have no way of calculating that ...as the entire configureation will be changed......im gonna have to guess!.....i think a three or four inch drop in the deck at the bow will level it out a bit.......

with the gas tank up front...and three big batterys up there too...i hope to level the waterline off a bit.....otherwise shell sit like a canoe with the passenger in the back

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

On a side note with all this talk of grinders, I was at Home Depot today and saw that they sell a 2 pack of Makita 4 1/2 grinders for $79. The description wasn't all that great, but the comparable Makita said the motor was "zig zig protected from dust?" Don't quote me on that, but it was the only one boasting about protecting the motor from debris....if this 2 pack has the same protection, I'm thinking it's the way to go for a couple of grinders. I figure I'll burn at least one of them up anyway, so if I can get 2 decent ones for $40/ea. I'm ahead of the game instead of relying on crappy 20 dollar junkers ( already had one start on fire in my hands from grinding my trailer! )

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

40 bucks a pop for makitas? good deal...!

as long as you have a warranty....you can take them back...and keep swapping them....

i was at home depot tonight....lookin for a new suit!

i found a grinding disc....(flapper) with a 24 grit...it said resin.....i asked then for more but one was all they had......that lil sucker chewed thru the glass like there was no tommorow !......i figgured i had 10 hours of grinding...and i did it in 3 !!!!...the whole hull in 3 hours !...man if i woulda had that puppie to begin with...i woulda been 2 weeks ahead of where i am now!

the dust was flying.....i had to sweep the boat 3 times so i could see what i was doing !......

i got it all ready to add the gype to the strakes and chines before the big layup......my girl leaves for ontario tommorow at one so i might get 10 hours on it un inturupted...after the gype..i think i can get two layers of cloth down and the stringers joined......thats a huge day.

cheers

Why don't you guys put a dust mask around the vent slots on your grinders or use a womens nylon sock..Still using the same grinder after the second boat. Just a thought. Zet

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

how heavy you think it is now? Im worried about that also. Im guessing im going to use about 10 gallons of resin and 6 of which is the wax stuff which i will have to sand or grind to get a good bond between layers. 10 gallons is pretty heavy buy nothing compared to what you have prob. used but then again a lot of what you are doing turns into dust and is swept away so that you get a strong hull. You pretty much took 1 step down to just getting a mold and starting from there. Well im off to my mom and dad's house to work on mine for about 3 hours. Im off this weekend but saturday i got a whole lot of to-do's from the wife but its ok i been neglecting them and sun she said i can spend on the boat. So i smile on 3 hours today. That way i have a game plan on sunday when i have all day. I cant wait to be totally working with new materials. It was a pleasure doing that transom and not getting dust on myself again. I got to now clean out the outer skin to install the transom and stringers are sunday i think if i can afford the plywood! Good job oops i dont think i could do that! Your boat is really looking like a boat now and im sure you will get the deck figured out.

thank you for the idea.....the particles are very small...as thin as drywall dust....ill look at my dewalt.....(thats the only one i really care about)...the rest are disposable...see if i can do it

....ha ha..ha....just a thought....my girl doesnt wear those nylons....so that means i gotta buy some.....that means ill wreck my best pair of nylons :D :D :D

its easier to take more off the top once they're in than to build them up. and, in my opinion, a boat is so rarely dead level flat....whether at rest on the water, on plane, or just barely off center on the trailer...that close enough is good for me/mine. i don't envy your puzzle tough.

even if you had a ramp close by, there isn't much of the boat there to try and see the waterline. maybe it would give you an idea of the angle at least. plastic wrap any transom holes, etc and add some weight for the engine, etc....maybe not. is there still ice up there?

Hey ya Redfury,

Makita is my brand of choice. I've had other's, but always come home to Makita. I've been a carpenter for 18 years, (going on 19) and I STILL have the 9.6V two speed cordless drill I bought when I started. No, it's not pretty, but it still works!

I own a Makita 4" angle grinder and have had it for 6 or so years. I've cut ceramic floor tile with it, ground / cut masonry, steel, and sanded more material than I can think of. It's a weekly use tool, and it still doesn't squeal in the bearings yet.

That two pack special for 80 bucks is a great deal, and you'll find the second one will probably still be running when you can't anymore. :D

Sorry, no hijack meant, but thought I'd throw my .02 in on the tool. DeWalt? Pro grade Black and Decker. I've had 'em die too many times.

Makita is famous for it's motor technology, it's considered best in class. Only weakness I've found is in the switches. I usually wear the switch out before anything else!

Ah yes....those switches.:(

Well, I'm not down on the Dewalt, just had better luck with the Makita.

I own a Dewalt / Emglo compressor that kicks butt. A portable dual tank hot dog unit that will run an impact driver! :)

Anyway, sorry Oops, you have a great thread here and I've learned so much from it. Thanks!
