Steven, I hope that I do not have to do that to mine. If I have too, I will. You were right about the socket, it was a 3/8.

I don't know what to tell you on the transom. Just seems like it would be a shame to go to all the trouble and all the nice work we all know you're going to do on everything else, to have a patched together transom. The SeaCast would obviously have different expansion qualities then the surrounding wood and it would seem to me that you'd have better chance of a crack or leak developing from that. But I'm not exactly an expert on the subject.

I was thinking about that EZ. I hope that some guys here can give me some ideas. It is just like an outboard transom when the dig out the old stuff and then pour in a new one. It seams similar to me.

Jay,
Really enjoy your threads/videos.
You think your transom shield/bolts were leaking causing the rot-rusted bolts?

I've seen other boats with transom cores stopping before the bottom. Parker is one.
Maybe they do this to keep the core from soaking up a leak at the drain plug.

Keep it up

Thanks Jas. I got a second wind after getting the engine out.

I know there was water there and would have caused the corrosion. The good thing is that the uppers are not even wet. That means the transom is only wet on bottom.

I like making the videos for you guys. If it helps someone that is scared of doing this, I am happy.

P.S. I just figured out the "quote thing". Pretty cool. Now if I can just figure out the search function. Ever since the upgrade I have not been able to find anything.

About the transom rot, I would try to see how far it goes, by drilling some test holes, to see if it comes out looking like good wood or mulch. If it's limited to those small areas (but we know rot often follows the grain of the plywood) here's what I'd consider...dig out as much as you can. Then treat the remaining wood with Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer. Next go over that with full strength epoxy. Then fill in the removed areas with rotdoc.com 's epoxy filler. This is a 2 part epoxy filler that is really strong, I have used it on many repairs (first patch job on my deck before I repaired it completely, and repair rot on my back porch with it as well). In both cases the CPES seemed to keep the rot from coming back (this stuff is TOXIC, wear protection) and the epoxy filler itself is stronger than the wood. Go over to www.rotdoc.com and take a look. Of course, you might want to just do it all the right way since you are doing stringers anyway, why have any doubt in your mind. The boat will for sure be a keeper when you are done. I like to see your pix and vids, I'd love to be able to work on mine now, but it's got 3 feet of snow on it!! With more to come....

I hear that. I found them the other day.

As soon as our little winter fit is over I will do some more drilling, and figure out just how bad it is.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I have a question. I'm currently looking for a 20 ft bowrider, either 80's or 90's. I could end up in the same situation you are end. I know this project sucks so bad because you paid for a lake ready boat. But if you had bought this boat, at the right price, knowing what work it needed, would it be so bad? The reason I'm asking is because, is it really difficult work? I know it's VERY time consuming, but is it very expensive? Do you have any idea how much it's going to cost you? One thing that would make me feel better is if it really didn't cost much, but in the end, you will basically have a brand new boat. And you will know it was done right, and will last for a very long time. That is worth a lot.

Also, I've read about people going to Lowe's or Home Depot and using composite decking boards and the decking. Probably not as nice on the feet as snap in carpet over fiberglass, but you know it'll last a long time, plus it'll drain very well. And it would be easy to unscrew the boards to get to the rest of the boat if you have to.

If you're this far, would it be worth it to spend a little more and make it last a long time? I almost figure, if you don't have to spend the money on the plywood and glass for the floor, maybe it'll cost about the same to just get the composite decking boards.

While I'm sorry this happened to you, at least people (like me) are learning a lot about used boats. Like I said, I'm shopping for a boat ( my 3rd) and I now realize how lucky I've been. Because of your videos, I know exactly what a good thump sounds like, and what a bad thump sounds like.

Again, this boat is going to be awesome when you are done.

Myself and I'm sure Jay will now recommend having a professional accredited marine survey on a used boat purchase. (SAMS) http://www.marinesurvey.org/ It was the best $300 I've spent in my 3 years of boating experience. Much less expensive than materials, not even close to the cost of your time alone... On my recent purchase, this terrible event Jay is dealing with, that could happen to anyone, made my decision a no-brainer... good luck!

Yes, it is very expensive to fix. I am estimating about 3 grand to do it right.

Yes I should have spent the money on a survey. I did not do this because the PO sent me all the receipts for the new deck and all the new gel coat. I just plain got suckered by an honest guy.

I'm curious Jay, Do you think the seller actually knew of the issues or do you think he was suckered by the shop that replaced the deck? Seems like the seller actually spent a lot of money on his restoration. I can't imagine that he actually knew it was a shoddy repair.

I have a feeling he got screwed too. My theory is that he paid to have a new deck put on two years ago and the guy never sealed the deck correctly. There may have been some rot then, but I think it accelerated.

Man it is aweful here. For the first time I had to cancel jobs today. I could not get into my shop due to the ice, and I was not about to pull a trailer today. It sleeted all night long and the roads are almost impassable. Right now we are in the teens, and will have a low in my part of the woods around 8 to 10 degrees. Yes you heard me right. Tomorrow the high will be around 18.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

You know, I have been doing alot of research on Sea Ray 220 models the past few days on Boat trader and other sites. I really did not pay such a bad price after all. From what I have seen people are asking between 11,000 and 15,000 for years that are close to mine. I payed alot less, but I will be back up there after all the repairs. So maybe this was a blessing, as I get to make it just the way i like it.
