Morning Jay,

My favorite thing to do on a Saturday morning, drink coffee and watch your YouTube vids.
As per norm, super pro work! Great progress! Sea Ray could never build it as good as you my friend!

Peace!

I have been a long time lurker to the thread, but decided to add a post ----
First Jay ---like everyone I trust things will go as well as they can with the family.

Your work is interesting and good to follow along.

I find it quite interesting when you are talking about corrosion and such. It is so different between saltwater and fresh water boating.
I did freshwater boating in Texas for a few years and it is so much easier to keep a boat clean. Here in salt water you would say, "Oh that is just a little surface corrosion", and probably live with it for a few more years. I used to say that "Ten years in fresh water is like One year in salt water" and I while that might be a little off -- it is not very far off.

Good work with your boat. It looks like it will be very very nice when finished.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I am not sure this boat was in saltwater, but I know it has been moored almost all its life. The engine and interior metal parts show no sign of salt water. I have read about fresh water boats getting outdrive corrosion from electrolysis in their slip, and the drives get all messed up. Now she will be a trailer boat, or we will have it in a slip that lifts the boat out of the water.

My Mom is still very alert, and enjoying what she has left. I really did not know what to expect with this hospice thing. I thought she would come home, we would huddle over her and she would pass. Not the case most of the time. The hospice nurse said that she is quite strong and alert. She actually got a little better when she got home, because all of the medicine the were giving her was making her all loopy. However this does not hide the fact that the cancer is coming back, and her liver is failing. She has made it clear that we need to keep living our lives, but still come by and visit with her cause she gets bored, and needs to be entertained (My mother's humor). She has also stated I am to keep all the young girls away from Dad and his money (more of my mothers humor). She has always been good about making light of a terrible situation. So we have been stopping by every other day to see her, and it has been great. It is sooooo weird saying goodbye to a loved one this way. You get all the closure you need, and you know that you can send them off with a clear heart. It is very different that getting that phone call at 1 in the morning, out of the blue, that some one is gone.

So on to boat news. I worked all weekend on the boat, but I feel like I did not get very far.

Rented the engine hoist
Mocked the engine into place to measure for mounts.
Made the engine mounts
Glassed in the mounts
Disassembled the gimbal housing

Those engine mounts were a real PITA!!!! I have two layers of 1708 on them now, but will be tabbing more to the hull for extra strength.

Pictures and lots of video to come.

Maybe, if things work out she could get the first ride?

That is an awesome idea, and I wish that could happen. She is bed ridden, and and can only move her arms. You gave me an awesome idea though. My dad has an iPhone 4 and we can facetime the launch to her. I just need to get another person with an iPhone 4. I have the 3gs. I just hope she makes it that long.

Jay,
Wow, that sterndrive looks brand new. This is obviously an investment of time and money, but I like you, am sure glad to own my boat and not have payments... After all, they are pretty much brand new boats by the time the project is complete. Keep it up, I'm still excited to see how you do the gelcoat on the deck... She's looking beautiful though.

One thing you might consider now that you have the gimbal ring and bell housing all torn apart... Replace those trim senders. I skipped that part thinking mine were just fine and later had to get those replaced. With the engine mounted, and the outdrive mostly together it was a HUGE PITA... Anyway, just something to consider while you have easy access.

Overall, I'm still completely impressed at how this project is coming along.

Jay,

Did you add wax to the resin you used to put down the last layer of FG? I don't recall hearing you mention anything about that but I could have missed it.

Your mom sounds like a cool lady. :) Get her some movies...there is nothing like escapism to take your mind off things. Working on the boat will keep you occupied too.

Yeah. Check the price on the trim senders as it will be an easy swap now as the wires on mine were rough.

I'm pretty sure its not needed if your applying Gelcoat, after all Gelcoat is like another layer of fiberglass.

No I did not. You do not want wax in that coat because the Gel Coat will not stick. The last layer of gel will have wax in it though because it will be the last layer.

I think that I payed $109 for a new set of mercruiser trim senders at the dealer. It was a pain to replace them with the drive on.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Hey guys, sorry for the delay.

I got some work done this last weekend, but I still have alot to do. I rented a engine hoist and test fit the engine so that I could make the engine mounts. I just wanted to make sure that they were perfect. I also test fit the new exhaust and made a plane on how I am going to route it.

One I did all that, I made the engine mounts, and got the glassed in. That was the hardest glass work I have ever done. I actually had to go all paper mache and dip strips of glass in resin and then apply them by hand. I have tow layers of 1708 on it, but I was thinking of tabbing it some more with another layer or two. I would not round over the edges any more, but just tab the the stringer and hull. What do you guys think?

I found this little angle finder at lowes, and it really helped in getting the proper angle for the mount

I used PB to glue the blocks together, and then I rounded all the corners to the glass would lay down.

All glued in. I used L brackets to hold the mounts to the stringers while it cured.

I also added a place for the bilge pump and float switch to mount too.

I also started to repair the gimbal housing to. I removed the gimbal ring, which was a night mare. The steering pin gets rusted and requires alot of penetrating oil and a hammer to get it out. I have ordered a Stainless Steel model from JR marine to replace it. I will then give it a coat of paint.

The steering pin

Got them sanded down and ready for paint.

I was lucky and my gimbal ring did not need to be repaired.

Jay,

I have watched many of your youtube videos and I admit I'm perplexed at your boat working time. Either you're rich and don't have to work or the family only gets to see you when at the lake! LOL

I will tell you, that watching you work and having the same questions I have, gives me encouragement to continue doing as much as I can before I give my boat to the mechanic!

Love your work and attitude and will continue to watch in amazement, as my days over here in The Colony seem to be WAY SHORTER than in Frisco!

Keep up the awesome postings. Photos always make it 1000x better as usual.
