Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Really???? I feel like an idiot talking to the camera, and I my neighbors must think I am a nut.
Just because your a nut, doesn't mean people don't enjoy the videos! (did that come out wrong?)
My wife came up with another cool name "OverHulled"
Well,.. that's it then. Beyond perfect. Unless of course you name it after her.

That's a good way to do it when you're replacing your old crummy Mercruiser or Volvo with a shiney new OMC Stringer drive :D

OMC = one more mistake coming your way

You have mentioned her a few times but we have never seen the "Admiral"? How about including her in a video? What does she think about all of this? I know the let down was probably as bad on her as it was for you. Bet she wasn't happy about delaying the "honey do" list...one more time.:)

Hey Jay,

I really like OverHulled too! And as always, great work! ;):D

I do however have one question. On your motor mounts, i know that what you put in is the same design the factory used, and will work perfectly now that they are installed, but like you said, they were a PITA to glass in. Did you consider using solid blocks of wood there? It just seems like it would be easier to glass in because you dont have the void underneath, and since the motor mounts are attached with lag bolts (I think?), there is no reason to need into the underside of the mounts.

She is not one to be around "construction" sites. She might break a nail

I thought about doing the solid mount but I talked to another builder and he advised against it. He said that a through bolts is much stronger than a lag. Lag bolts can work loose.

Ok, that makes a lot of sense when you are using through bolts for the mounts. Actually, thinking back, I don't know where I got the idea that you were using lag bolts in the first place...:facepalm:

The through bolts will definitely be stronger, especially if you use large washers on the underside, and I would probably go with some form of self-locking nut also. Ny-locks are my preference, because the lock won't rust in place, but I don't know how hard they will be to find in a stainless form. Of course, I am just assuming you'll be using stainless bolts? And yes, I know what assuming does

Yes, it came with My-Locks and all stainless hardware. My old Glastron had lag bolts and it worked fine for the 5.7, but I think when you go to the 7.4 you need extra support.

I am actually ready to gel coat. I finished glassing in the trim pump mount and the two battery trays yesterday. I just need to wipe everything with acetone and start rolling.

Great work Jay. I have been trying to watch your latest two videos all week. I have AT&T DSL and I swear it is slower than dial-up. After about 10 minutes, I was less than two minutes into the first video so I gave up. I am back at work tonight and was able to get caught up (lol). I was about to ask, but I saw on post 1172 that you put a false floor under the batteries and trim pump. That is what I plan on doing as well. Looking forward to seeing the gel-coat go down. Thanks, Steven

Lowes has a good selection of SS bolts, washers and ny-lock nuts. They're proud of them though.

Mom went to be with the Lord today. We were all with her when she passed, and she is at piece now. Thank you all for all the support through all this.
