Jay,

Progress appears to be moving along great. You'll be on the water sooner that you think. Good to see your dad able to give you a hand. Have a great weekend. Thanks, Steven

Nothin like dead batteries to stop progress. I am about 1/3 of the way into pouring foam, and I have no juice! I cannot drill holes without juice.

On finishing the deck. I'd use CSM, it comes out much nicer then anything else will. I would not use 1708 on the deck. On mine I tabbed with a 4" strip of CSM 1.5oz, then a 6" tab of Woven 16oz, then 1 layer of CSM went on the deck and butt against the hull sides, then 1 more layer of CSM wrapped up the sides going over the woven. Worked awesome, I just sanded the deck out yesterday and came out real nice, used my belt sander and small orbital sander with 100grit.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I have decided to go ahead with just one layer of 1708 for the tabbing and then two layers of CSM for the finish layer on the deck. Thanks for all the opinions guys.

Well the foam is DONE!!!!!! Whooohooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I finished it up this morning, and it really was not as bad as I thought it would be. It is very messy, but if you get a plan going, you will be good to go. I am now working on the gas tank enclosure and I found floor mats made from recycled tires that will work perfect. I will just cut them into strips and glue them in.

Anyway Here are some pictures and a couple of videos. I need to get back to work.

Single 8" strip of 1708 Biax for the tabbing to the hull

I also wrapped the corner to the bilge.

Aero Marine Foam. This stuff is so easy to work with.

DSC00858.jpg

I used 2" pour and relief holes to guide the foam where I wanted it to go. Major learning curve. I had it down pat right when I finished.

My daughter called these mushrooms. It is where the foam came through the holes.

What a mess. You will go through a TON of supplies because the foam sticks to everything.

This is goboating here, new guy. Love this site!!! Friscoboater you've heard it before and I will say it again, my hats off to you man, keep on keeping on, what you are doing looks great. I just finished watching your Sears rant and couldn't agree more. All anyone wants these days is a warm body for tax purposes. You also said you were starting to look for a new tool box. Try this, look for the tool trucks when you are out. These are Snap-on, Mac, Matco and Cornwell. When they sell a new box they will take in trades. I bought a top and bottom Cromwell 36" wide for $350.00. All I had to do was clean it up and I've had it now for 10 years. I haven't filled it up yet.
I also belong to a site called www.tinboats.net, this is for the guys with aluminum boats that want to make it their own or just aren't satisfied with how the mfg built it. The guys having the problems these days are the ones that are restoring the old Trackers. As other people have found out the hard way, Tracker or whoever fills it up with foam, but then leaves no way for the water to drain back to the tramsom. Its not that your motor is gretting tired, it that your boat has about 200-250 LBS of SOAKED foam in it!!! I don't remember who posted it but I agree with what he said. You get a new boat, or one that's a few years old (3-5) because what I keep on seeing is guys like you that end up paying for it....literaly. Its like the mfg plan for obsolescence. Two things before I go, I really like the videos. You explain things very well and the video helps get the point across. Also could you do a minute or two on your outboard stand. I saw part of it when you were talking about the outdrive stand. I have been looking for ideas for one and that looks great. Once again...keep up the WONDERFUL work.

Good stuff as usual Jay. When I did the foam we used 32oz container and two smaller ones to pour part A & B in, much less waste that way, ans we kept using the same 32oz container till it was done, just go fast, and 2 people help allot!!!!!

About your drill batteries. Here is a tip before charging them throw it in the freezer for 10-15 minutes, keep doing that each time and you'll get longer run times out of them, and they'll charge quicker, heat is a battery's worst enemy!

Jay,
Just got caught up on the latest videos. Great work, the more I watch your progress the more I think of how I might have done things differently for my project. Hey, I'm sure there will be more opportunities to use all this knowledge you're sharing (that fact is both a good and bad thing).

The part I've been wanting to see is how you top off the deck. I glued marine carpet on mine but am now having second thoughts. I'm now thinking of removing the glued in carpet and laying down some CSM, then gel-coating it. Anyway, thanks again and keep it up my friend!

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

That took all weekend to catch up!!

When we were glassing 10" sono tube for a 16' rocket, we had a cup kick before we were done mixing it. Being 110 in the shade didn't help so what we did was move the cans inside on a bare tile floor till we needed to mix again.

First thing I thought of when you started mixing. Then with the foam, I'd probably have a cooler or box with dry ice to keep it from kicking too fast.

I'd mention tossing batteries in the fridge, alas,..

Thanks for the videos. I was given a 13' tri that has sat out back for too many years. I know I need to get the floor off and see what's up. There's also some gelcoat areas where they wacked into something up front. I really grabbed the thing for the trailer, but maybe I'll get it in the water now.

Jay I've really enjoyed your videos. I hope to never have to do a complete deck job but at least now I know where I can find the information.

Keep up the great work.

Sharing is the name of the game here. Then a person can make up his or her own plan and do their project. There are many ways to restore a boat, and I think we all just want to make sure it is safe.

I thought about chilling the parts, but then I would not get as much yield. Oh well, it just made me work fast.

I never want to do another deck either. Thanks for the kudos!
