It's the right time to sell for sure. Are you taking it somewhere for consignment or selling it yourself?

Not sure of the height of your boat, but I did some glass work like this. Backed it into the garage and turned on some fans. I had to unhook it and drop the tung to the ground. It worked ok as long as you don't mind smacking your head now and then. Best part is it's free.

I just have to put it up and take it down every day. My HOA will have a fit.

We ended up taking ours down every day to prevent the gusty winds from taking it away. I think we got it for about $80 bucks or so.

I found one at Sams, and I am going to try and pick it up tomorrow.

Well the Glastron is all clean and running perfect. I was updating on my new Facebook page today. I think that is so cool. Anyway, I have a great video of the days work that you will get a kick out of. I will have it uploading by the morning.

Jay,

looks awesome. On those 2 spots that don't seem to have absorbed the resin, I am wondering if sweat could have dripped onto that area making it wet and preventing the resin from soaking in. I have never done glass work so I could be way off base, but I thought I would throw it out there.

Thanks for sharing all this and your mom is in our thoughts.

I thought about that, but they are too perfect of imperfections. I read somewhere that the glass has a binder on it that allows it to hold resin. I wonder if it was missing there.

Hello, I have a 1994 celebrity status 180, that i need to do the same stringer/transom/everything repair on. I have watched your you tube tips and was wondering how do you mount your motor mount blocks to the bottom of the boat? And can you use the Bondo-Glass Fiber for working the Fillets instead of using the peanut butter method? I have some body work experience, but just unsure what to do on boats. THANKS By the way great work and keep making the videos, it helps me with the confidence to prepare mentally for the abuse to the wallet.

Jay,

You might want to take a look at this. Another iboater reminded me of this. I had almost forgot about it. This IS the way to do your foam. Lay down some pvc pipe, then the plastic. It will work Great. Makes it ALL removable with out any problems

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Wood, I thought about that to when I saw Bob's thread. The problem with them being removable is that you lose the adhesion adn stiffness you get with the foam. This is not really for flotation as this boat is way too heavy and according to the coast guard calculation for foam, I could not get enough in here to stop it from going down. It is more to stiffen the hull and provide sound deadening. After talking with a boat builder here, I have learned a great deal in the past week. Most things I have done are correct, but a few I need to change. This guy is in his 60s and has rebuilt lots of boats. Here is what he said.

1. Seal everything and do not use limber holes.
2. Use a rubberized coating inside your compartments (ie redguard) after all glassing is done
3. Glass and rubberize the underside of the deck
4. Use stainless screws to hold down the deck even if you are using epoxy, ans seal with 5200.
5. Epoxy is over rated, and if not mixed just right is not as strong (his words not mine)
6. Poly will fry your brain as it has his... LOL!!!
7. If you are a good glasser you do not need 1708 to not get bubbles  I guess I am not good enough... LOL
8. Do not seal up the gas tank compartment in case of a leak. He said access panels are ok, but he preferred to use a full hatch.
9. When foaming under a deck you need to use 4# foam, not 2# in a big boat like mine. It provides more stiffness and stops the boat from twisting as much. This also helps keep cracks from forming in your glass.
10. Lots of bulkheads to help with torsional twist also.
11. Run a large PVC pipe from the ski locker to the bilge for cable runs if needed. I have not done this, but am considering it.
12. If you can do without a ski locker, do not put the hole in your deck. The water runs around the opening and under the bottom of the deck and will find holes. However, if you really make sure it is sealed, get in there after the deck is on, and glass the joint, you will be ok.
13. Last but not least. Pop for covered storage. All boat covers leak.

He has really been helpful in what I have been doing and I am sooo grateful. I still want to put in limber holes though. It is just nagging at me.

Ok... Now for what I got done yesterday. This stringers and bulkheads are totally glassed in, and now I need to cap them off. The video will take a while to edit as I got a cool new tripod so you can watch the work being done. Not sure how it all turned out, so we will see.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Well the hard part of glassing is done I think. I finished up the engine box today, and it feels awesome. I still have to cap the stringers, and I am not looking forward to that. I think I am going to buy a small router with a round off bit and make it easy on myself. Then I am going to coat the cleats in resin mixed at a slow kick and then screw them to the stringers to hold the deck down. I hope to get some time this week to get that done. I need to get the deck in soon.

Here are some pictures. The videos will be up by morning.

This is how far I took it up the stringers. I will cap these

Looking back at the stern. That engine box caused me loss of sleep. It sure turned out nice. No those are not air bubbles, it is the grain of the wood.

Bow repair. 2 layers of 1.5 and two layers of 24 roving.

That looks awesome Jay. Looking forward to your video. How are you going to build the engine mounts? I thought that mine were 2x4's but when I cut them out it looked like 3/4" plywood wrapped in a ton of fiberglass. i am considering going back with 2x4's. Have a great week. Thanks, Steven

Mine were the same way, and had a nut and a bolt holding it together. I an going with a solid block of wood this time and beefy lag bolts.

Looks great Jay. I know that was a lot of work. I like the 45 deg. cut out for your fuel hoses. Did you go to the hull on both sides of the stepouts? Looks beefy.

Yes on the ends and one support in the middle. You can bounce on them.
