Jay,

The APA says this about plywood weight.

3 pounds per square foot per inch of thickness according to APA Plywood Design Specification.

So 1 square foot of 1/4inch plywood should weight approx. 3/4 of a lb. Sooooooooooooo. 8" stringer @ 19' = 9.5 lbs. in additional weight. Hope this helps with your calculations.

That does help alot. I think it would add about 35 pounds extra. To me that seems worth it for the added strength. What do you think?

Jay hope you get better fast, injuries stink, esp for those of us of a certain age
My old 88 4 Winns has 3/4" thick stringers, I think the additional stiffness may well be worth the weight increase.

Oh how I would love to go get the Glastron and take her out. Our last freeze usually hits around mid April, and so I will wait until the 1st of may to de-winterize. The sad thing is that when I do that, she is going up for sale. It is going to be up on ebay for giggles, but I really do not think ebay cheapsters will give much for it. I will have to find a real enthusiast

I am feeling a million times better today, and I just wish it was warmer. We had a little cold snap and drizzle this week, so the resin application is at a halt for now. I should get my 1708 tomorrow, and If I can keep from getting hurt, I should be able to get back at it soon.

As far as the stringers go, i am almost 100% sure I will switch to 3/4"

Sorry to hear about your injuries, Jay. All of the sudden, I feel kinda' crappy for the "NO fall" line in my signature!!! Anyway, glad your OK. Could have been a whole lot worse. Don't rush things when it comes to rehabilitating injuries. A Physical therapist once said something to me which I found pretty funny. "The three A's of physical therapy... Ambulate, Ambulate, Ambulate!!!";)

Get well soon, Buddy!!!

Good to hear you are feeling better now. Few pages back you asked how to remove the carpet glue, if this still an issue, here is what I did..

Get few cans of 3M general purpose adhesive remover part number 3M 051135-08984 and one chemical resistant sprayer from HD.

Spray a 2 or 3 sq/ft area and give it few minutes to work. Wipe down with a steel wool wire to remove most of the glue. Repeat as needed and wipe the last coat with clean cloth.

I'd go with 3/4" and maybe tie the stringers together by adding lateral frames fore and aft of the fuel tank. Notch the stringers to the frames and make a strong grid structure. The added weight will still be much less than the weight of that wet foam and soaked wood.

Knowing that you have beefy 3/4" stringers under you you will feel better/safer while underway. That extra 35lbs will be priceless ;)

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Here are some pictures until I can get the video edited. My son shot the video and I will have to spend some time to cut out the bad parts.

Here is what I did.

1. I sanded each surface one more time with my DA sander and 60 grit
2. Cleaned each surface with acetone
3. Mixed 3 quarts of resin, added my hardener, and then mixed in 1/4" Chopped fibers and cabosil until it reached PB consistency
3. I spread it on both surfaces about 1/4" thick and slapped it on.
4. Once in place I used 2X4 Clamps for pressure and I used the sqeeze out to make my fillets.

DONE!

Now I mixed my resin very slow and it still went off in 20 minutes. Talk about close!. Also You can see in the pictures that I did not take the transom all the way to the drain hole (was like that from the factory), and added a 3/4" piece of PVC that leads to the drain. I then filleted the area with PB. There is no way water will get in that wood now.

My plan today is to tab in the transom with two layers of 1708 and then skin it with two layers of 1708.

Major Clampage!!

I alternated between flat and on end for the clamps

Filleted the strakes for easy fiberglass layup

This is the new drain. It leads back to the brass threaded drain plug.

Here you can see where I added some PLY to the 2X4 so that i could have pressure on the outside. It worked nice.
