Re: Funny "TLC needed" boat ads on Craigslist.

This has been listed for a few weeks now, the price has been creeping up over time. I guess he thinks the older it gets the more it's worth. Its been listed for a few months now or more.

The way I read it is that the boat overheated badly, then we fixed the water pump, it's not right so now it's for sale?

Believe it or not, the hardware and the hull ID number alone hold some value. Many of these restorations of an old Chris, Century, Garwood etc include almost 100% new wood. The stuff that it is hard to replace is the original cleats, cast lifting eye brackets, windshield frames, throttle and shift linkage pieces are all worth money. There are guys that make a killing off of that stuff. Check out these prices: http://www.californiaclassicboats.com/

I just went to look at a little 9.9hp motor Add from the penny saver (not CL but just as bad:)

"2006 Honda, 9.9. Runs. May need new parts, some smoke damage. $600"

That's a steal, right? Well... not if they fail to mention that the last time his grandpa had it out (why is it never theirs??) It started smoking a little, and then CAUGHT FIRE. Cowling was melted down into the pull start. Also, the prop only had two of the three blades that were supposed to be there- they cut it off for a slower trolling speed... would that even work????

He also offered to throw in some 'weed.'

wow.

Re: Funny "TLC needed" boat ads on Craigslist.

I, personally, am a huge hater of over-use of slang. People writing "words" like "prolly" really sticks in my craw.

I have Comcast and on their home page they have links to different news and entertainment video clips. There are certain celebrities I like so I stupidly click on the links. Anything from E! news now is pretty much guaranteed to annoy me in a major way. Celebrity combination names or shortened names such as Branjolina, Vaugniston, HayPay (for Hayden Panettiere) LiLo (for Lindsay Lohan) are horrendous to me. Shortened slang words like vacay for vacation make me want to force choke, ala Darth Vader, through the internet. It's laziness at its' worst. That kind of sloppy "journalism" is contributing to the downfall and dumbing down of society at large and needs to be stopped.

But I digress.....Back to the funny boat ads from clueless morons.

This kinda cracks me up . . . As I prolly use more slang than most. Annnnnd, I also hate the dumbing down of our language, poor punctuation and bad spelling (BTW, dumbing down is slang) . . .

I love the flavor that slang lends to language. I like using it for humor, and I like using it to set others at ease. I have also described myself as one big ball of inconsistency, so there you have it . . . :D

How about this one from eBay? A pontoon half listed as a thirty foot boat. I guess it's not what it is, it's what you call it that matters.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/M-4-...d=ViewItem&pt=Other_Boats&hash=item4aa351a4d4

You are bidding on (1) used M-4 Aluminum Military Boat

Specifications:
Gross Weight: 1750 LBS
7 feet wide long
30 feet long
3 1/2 feet deep
Serial Number: 162
Made By Lord & Burnham

Please do not be alarmed by our (0) transaction history. We are a used equipment, truck & salvage wholesaler that has been in business for over 30 years.
This is our first adventure using Ebay as a sales tool for our merchandise. Until now the thousand of items we have sold have been through our wholesale yard and live auctions??
All items are sold as is, where is with no warranty.??

One of the pictures is of the ID tag. It reads as follows:
CORPS OF ENGINEERS
US ARMY
BRIDGING EQUIPMENT
PONTOON HALF. ALUMINUM,
FOR DIVISION AND ARMY BRIDGES
Then it lists the gross weight, model number, manufacturer, and date of manufacture: Dec.15, 1944

Merriam-Webster and I will both have to disagree with you about my using slang as oposed to a transitive verb:

Main Entry: dumb down
Function: transitive verb
Date: 1933
: to lower the level of difficulty and the intellectual content of (as a textbook); also : to lower the general level of intelligence in <the dumbing down of society>
Verifiable at: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dumb down

And please do not consider this a personal attack or insult but It's a matter of personal perception. When I see people use made up words like "prolly" the first thought that enters my mind is "what a moron."

Once again, it's not a personal attack, it's what I think. I know I make some grammatical errors such as improper placement of prepositions. I do, however, make an EFFORT to use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Failure to do otherwise is just plain lazy.

those are neat "boats"

even though they really were used as boats, they were temporary bridge parts..they would put then side by side joined on the corners to the "boat" next to it and then they would lay a road surface over them all to make a temporary bridge.. I have seen a bunch of them converted into duck boats...but they were all 18 feet long..that one is 30 feet long

they have flat transoms 90 degrees to the hull, so to hang a motor on them , you ahve to fashion, make or weld a angle bracket on the transon to hold the motor at at angle!!!

wonder what it ends up going for..

they peked for the duck hunters about 6 years ago...one guy sold maybe a dozen...they dont handle rough water well under power because of the flat bottom other than their sheer weight

Re: Funny "TLC needed" boat ads on Craigslist.

When I lived in Australia the folks down there are the worst at short slang names:

a garbage man is a Garbo
A shock absorber is a Shocki
a carburator is a Carbi
etc

An American is a Seppo that comes from a Septic Tank Yank.

They do have some fun ones:

Somthing that is very good is the Bees Knees or the Mutts Nutts

Something that is very disorgainzed or an military CF is The Dogs Breakfast

there are many more.
:D
