Yep, I am going to keep the original for sure.

Hey guy I need some help. I am looking for a set of Mercruiser S pipes for this project. I am going to do a thu hull under the water line, and I have seen lots of CVX-18s done this way. Every place I have checked does not have have any more, or they want full retail ($419). Can you guys keep an eye out for a deal on them?

Yep like everyone else keep my votes for the original gell . The top cap sure seemed a little heavier than it looked . Your neighbor sure showed up at the right time !

I vote to keep the original coat as well. I think any reasonable boat owner expects a few dings and scratches. Although I guess it depends on how bad they are.

However, that's difficult for me to say since I really was hoping to see you do some gelcoating as I think this is a subject that lacks good video instructions - especially with some of the more exotic spraying methods. I have been wanting to ask if you plan on spraying or painting the gelcoat in the cockpit, but I thought that was waaay to early to begin thinking about : )

No gel this time. I am going with old school carpet for sure. The bilge will get enamel with hardener though.

My vote is also to keep it original. You will have a LOT of money tied up in re-gelcoating it that you'll NEVER recoup. I see you have decided to keep it original also which is good.

I've looked at boats that have been painted with automotive paint and clear coat and have immediately passed on them. It is an improper repair method and I couldn't help but wonder what the owner was trying to cover up. I realize you would use gel coat but it could have the same effect on a prospective buyer.

Keep it original, part of the appeal is the period look, which probably would be next to impossible with current materials.

I agree. It would be really hard to make right. My Sea Ray has new gel where it is blue, but that is just one cold, and pretty easy at that.

i am in the "keep it original" camp too. If you redo it, it is only going to get dinged up a bit the first season or two, then you are right back where you started.

Elaborate please? You re-did all the blue gelcoat? Any videos of that?

Sorry I should have been more clear. It was done before I bought. I saw the receipt for $1800.

Jay:

Looking good . . . the rodents are out finding a new place to live.

Have you considered going with synthetic materials for the new structure? It might be a bit more $$$, but great for longevity.

Thanks Clock! MTwain... you are awesome!! I am sending an email to this guy and I just might buy them. It scares me to buy old ones though. What does everyone think? Get some new ones, or get some old ones?

Jay - the seller is on the CGOA MN forums...he's a straight shooter so you won't have any problems with the seller.

I would skip the old ones and go new.

Old school flake = period gauges..... :frog: IMHO

But yeah, not w/out some thought about making them look as good as they should w/ all the resto work. And fully functional until much longer then just through the water test at sale.
