Hey man... Just read your thread. Looks like you have your work cut out for you. No worries though bro, as soon as you get down to good glass and get the itch to start laying some glass, you will be breathing fresh air with your restore (figuratively speaking... resin and acetone smell horrible...) Best of luck and keep us updated with pics!

Re: First attempt at boat repair

and for disclousre, the wife has allowed me to do whatever it takes to get the D*** boat back on the water by Memorial Day, 2013. Budget is now $4500-5000, that has to cover deck repairs, upholstery, Gauge replacement, and the Trim sending unit for the trim gauge. The restrictions are: If I spend any money, then it has to all get done, no backing out, and If i spend any money better do it how I want it now, cause it will be the ONLY boat, and only MAJOR project I will be allowed to do till I will have till the house is paid off. Considering I took a 30 year mortgage on May 2 of this year, it has to work out. She will allow a repaint on the hull in a year or so, and engine/out drive maintnence is not held against me, cause everyone knows boat motors cost money to keep running.

I will have to give up new gun purchases for the forseeable future, and no new RC Cars, and last, She gets to keep my profit sharing checks.

Dude... errr... uhhh... congrats??? Seems like an awful lot to give for such a "family intended" project! Anyways, beyond that... your budget is outstanding! As stated before, you can look at roughly 2k for glass repairs between the glass and wood for the stringers, deck, etc. not including any additional tools you may need (which I don't think you in your profession will). Buuuuuuuut... I think a Memorial Day launch is a great date to set. It gives you plenty of flexibility for the unseen and you don't have to rush things. Just remember, don't push it off. You may find that in a month or three that you are not as motivated and just want to get the boat away from the house. Would love to see some more pics! Keep up the good work!

Re: First attempt at boat repair

that was a huge plus of the seacast. If I can get the rot out and keep the fiber intact, i could replace the stringers in 1 weekend, maybe 2. I could get the deck replaced in another weekend, I could forseeably have the boat rebuilt by newyears, if murphy stays away. if I do the wood, stringers would be placed by christmas.

Watching friscos videos, he had already used 10 gallons and had only the stringers and bulkheads pb in place, no real glass work done. if i have to order from us composite, i would have over $775 just in resin. no glass or anything else, just the resin. seems cheaper in the long run to do the seacast.

RC, Great looking project, not sure how you managed to convince the (Boss) to excuse that budget! :) In any case that is very good news, and I would think that it will be a fairly good amount to finish that project, leaving you with some left over. No experience in restoring boats yet, but I have read many stories here. So keep up the hard work when you get time, and hope to see it splashed on your intended date.

If I am to have the budget, I have to park my other hobbies. I have Nitromethane RC buggies and truck, I collect the occasional gun. RC doesn't seem too bad, broke a connecting rod at the wrist pin, $125 to replace engine, up to $400 to upgrade. Fuel is $35 per gallon minimum. Makes marinara gas seem cheap.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

My plan for thursday, I am going to level the boat on the trailer, to make it easier to lay everything up, and possibly pour in seacast if that ends up being my best choice. cut out the back deck, and see if there is any way I can get the bow section out with decapping. I doubt it, I never get that lucky.

So general garage cleaning, and a bit more stripping of the boat. I am going to have to decap to replace the floor. there is some delam under the bow seating section, so it has to come off and get redone.

and cap needs repairs
102_4781.jpg
and the console pisses me off the most. The wheel was a bit loose feeling. so they braced it by drywall screwing in a wood shim. I am REAL PISSED with the local marina. it would be safe to say I will never be going there for anything, period. They dont even want to see a boat if it was made after 1990, and they do some of the worst possible work. THey said deck was solid, it is rotten, said the wheel was done, and it was half assed in. They said trim had a minor leak, found stripped parts, hoses completely disconnected and water in the oil.

I do have the local boat mechanic coming over to winterize the motor, and see about pulling the motor, gimbal and outdrive off for a thourogh inspection, and repairs. Easier to drop the motor at his place than try to store it at mine. I had an issue with the trim, a nylok came loose, adn he came to my house on a sunday, replaced the bushings in my driveway, and didnt charge a thing. Winterizing without fluid changes runs $75. Might as well tackle the fluids in the spring, after the boat is reassembled.

no pics to put up just yet but I got the port side cut out from the doghouse to the console. Pulled a couple hundred pounds of saturated foam out. the bulkhead doesnt look too bad. Still need to get to the stringer, I should have most the deck removed tomorrow, and ready to pull the engine when I am home in 2 weeks.

It's amazing at how just a small soft spot in the deck can turn out to be so much more eh?

I'm glad to see you chose to do the job right instead of just replacing a 1' square peice of decking.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

Railcar, I owe you a list...this is just from memory....so might be off a little...and keep in mind I am new to this so used alot more than what a pro would have...I probably have 2 gals of resin just sitting around in the form of a 'puck'....

Keep in mind I have a 20' boat with deep sides.....

So far I have used 25 gallons of resin...a gallon of gelcoat....expect to use another 3 gallons of gel, maybe little more...close half a roll of 1708 biax cloth and about the same for 1.5 oz csm... 7 gallons of acetone....not sure how much fumed silica..I bought a 10lb bag....way too much, but it cost me less than ordering/shipping from USC. way too much 1/4" milled fiber...too much glass bubbles...8 or 9 sheets of 3/4" ply....2 sheets of 1/2" ply...too many mix buckets, rollers, spreaders, trays and rags to count..2 boxes of 2" chip brushes...guessing maybe 10 boxes of gloves...2 sets of cartidges for my respirator...3 or 4 packs of sanding disks for my 4.5" grinder...sand paper of all different types of grits...2 gallons of paint stripper...3 giant tubes of PL....2 big tubes of 5200...gallon of TBIII glue...only used about half of it....plenty of SS screws to put the deck down...2PF think those were 4 gallons each part...i'm sure I am missing something...like mixing sticks...links to pics with some of the bigger purchases of materials...

Re: First attempt at boat repair

Wow. Thank you trooper, sounds more like a house building list than a boat repair. I have a 18'8" trihull with the same deep sides, but I am not going anywhere near as far as you have. Deck and interior trim pnly for me this go round. Repair any hull damage of course, but I am not going to gel the entire boat. Kudos, you have taken that old ebko way further than I would have.

I got 1/3rd of the deck removed, port side from the stringer to the side. pulled at least 300lbs out in waterlogged wood and foam, white mold growing on the foam, good thing I use respirator all the time. Starting to put my order list together. Hope to have all my supplies by christmas. Found out the local boat guy is a member of Iboats, Twister. Came over to winterize the engine, taught me how to DIY, and offered to come over when I pull the motor/outdrive to make sure everything goes smoothly.

This is what happens when people don't keep their boat covered when it's not in use. Leaving the inside of a boat exposed to rain, snow, and ice is one of if not the worst thing you can do... especially if the boat has a carpeted deck.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

Poor storage, combined with the holes for the pour in foam not being covered, and 34 years, makes for a huge mess.

I really like the way Sleeper-6 did his pour in foam installation in this build:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=507523&highlight=sleeper6

Lots of bulkheads and then pour the foam high and cut it off flush with a hand saw after it was cured... no need for holes in the decking and you're sure everything is poured solid. I may have even went a step further and painted the top of the foam to ensure it being waterproof.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

I got interesting news today. Apparently my search for local suppliers has turned south on me. One supplier turned me into the local drug task force. Apparently they thought is suspicious that I was looking for 15 gals resin, catalist, cabosil, acetone, ect, so the turned me in. Needless to say wifey wasn't too happy when they showed up at the house today with a warrant to search. Only 1 local company would even talk to me, and forget them, never heard of cabosil, milled fibers, 1708 biax, CSM, at 5.99 a yard, and resin was either $370.95 for 5 gallons, or I could use the SMC, at a mere $741.50 for 5 gallons. as for acetone, I would have to pay $38 per gallon, 1 gallon a month limit. Looks like I will be using the WWW for my shopping.
