Re: First attempt at boat repair

I kinda started a salt water aquarium over the winter months, and needless to say the dear wife wasnt too happy when she got my USC order to place. Since I am gone so much, I have my wife place my orders, she knows what the budget looks like, personally I got no clue. If i am to keep my salt tank, she said I have to pare back a bit
Edit

Yea .. a Salty tank requires A lot of time to get it started ( reef tank is very expensive )

Dont get the wife involved in it unless she is dedicated to it.

YD.

The procrastination ferry has been kicking my butt. Got promoted and now I am managing a 4 million dollar project on my own managing contractors and employees under me. AS of right now, more sanding to be done then hopefully start glassing this year. I havent forgotten about you all, just need to get some motivation and get healthy (had a lower lumbar back injury at work, and couldnt walk for a week)

injury is healing, been 2 weeks and still hurts every day. Pinched nerves make it kinda hard to climb in and out of the boat, but I will have to get grinding again.

as for the promotion, thank you. 6 years with the company, I just wish it came with a raise. instead 10x the work load and responsibility, no raise in pay.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

I have come to the hard realization that the boat is just too much project for my schedule. No one around here is interested in the hull, so I think this beauty is headed for the scrapyard. 3 days a month just isnt enough time to make any progress, so I am pulling the plug before I get any deeper into it. Anyone here interested in a project?

Re: First attempt at boat repair

Wow, very sorry to hear the news...
If I was closer I would seriously consider taking it on...that would be a real nice family boat when done...
I remember reading that YD mentioned to give him a holler if you wanted to get rid of it { PS. If you decide to sell it give me a PM :) , from post # 29}...I think that was before the actual teardown, tho...
It is too bad you can't keep it on the back burner, and work on it when you do have the time...I know in my case, mine has been sitting for the better part of three months with no real progress, but I keep the candle burning because this is what I want...
Hopefully the future keeps getting brighter for you and yours, and in time you find the boat of your dreams...whether it is this one or another.
Best of Luck and Kindest Regards,
Gus

I really dont want to scrap her, but my schedule is pretty well fixed for the next 3-5 years. I am hoping to find a new boat (one that doesnt need so much work) cause the family loved having this one so much, and I loved it too.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

Hopefully YD will still be interested.... I'm sure it'd be nice to see it finished, even if by another.

Big commitment of time, space & money. Knowing when to call it is much tougher then we'd like to believe.

Best of luck w/ the work changes.

If/when you decide to jump into a boat again, you will be much more capable of assessing it's actual condition, and know how & where to look for hidden problems & etc.

Enjoy your time home w/ family, the extra 3 days a month not working on a boat, could be just the thing to keep ya going until you're ready to consider a boat again.

BTW: Don't even think about LOOKING at boat ads for a good long while. You may succumb to the siren's song again too soon.

Railcar, it took me 20 month to finish and the boatman is taking another month to install motor and new steering system. It's worth it when I go back and look at the pictures and their date stamps I impressed myself, I'm a happy man and she hasn't hit water yet.

A bit late, I am already looking. I will take a nice bad wiring or a good hull with a blown motor at this point. I know I can handle those fixes, and I dont have to mantain temp for them either.

not likely, I am sticking with Glass. I can not find a Tinny bowrider anywhere around here, all the tins are fishing boats, and I want a family boat, with I/O power.

I had a local boat shop offer me $1200 for the engine and outdrive.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

Dozer & Boatnut are keeping all the tin open bow I/O 18ft SS's for themselves out west............

Is the $1200 an option? If an I/O is what you really want, you might keep the driveline & sell (give away) just the trailer & boat as is as a project for someone else.... Did you PM Yacht Dr?

He passed. I am thinking I willtry to sell all the parts off the boat then take the hull to the gun club for some stress relief.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

If the driveline is in good shape (probably if there was a $1200 offer), and you have the room, might consider mothballing it. Then your options of boats opens up a great deal. Adds boats w/ a blown motor or outdrive, and those w/ an obsolete OMC motor & outdrive boat...

If you are at all inclined to keep the motor & outdrive, there's a tin boat out your way (or was yesterday). It's a cuddy, but certainly could fit the bill of dual purpose & passenger comfort. An enclosed cabin, perhaps w/ a head makes, boating much more tolerable to the Admirals down this way. Sioux City if I remember correctly...

EDIT:
Yep, Sioux City, 22' Crestliner Norseman (looks similar to an SC Islander), $1500, but even w/ tandem trailer & surge brakes, I'd probably try to stay under $1K.

I saw that one, I don't know boat motors that well, but mine is a 4 cyl mercy 140, and I think that one was a 165, not sure they can be switched
