Re: Fat guys in a little boat

I think he'd be really happy with the sixteen foot V bottom in Denver. Talk them down to $450, get a Minn Kota Endura and DC battery at Wallyworld, find a little 9.9 Johnnyrude for four bills and get after it. Life is good. Heck, I'm starting to want a little rig like that for myself. Hmmmm, wonder how I could hide it from the admiral.............

Waiting for the guy to call me back now, as long as there are no glaring problems with the boat/trailer, its pretty much a done deal. Ill try to haggle it a bit but I think the price is reasonable at asking.

So what do you suggest? $1000 is pretty impossible unless you get a Jon boat or some of the other small boats already mentioned.

No sense in suggesting options that are not allowed on his lakes or are beyond his current budget.

As I said in my previous posts, 1648 jon with 1000# capacity, 21" gunnels and transom, 48-70# electric,

You will have many more options to choose from in 2 -3 months. Springtime is when the boats come out of storage and hit the market.

Wanted to get a quick opinion on http://denver.craigslist.org/boa/2820270927.html. I guess 14' is about the minimum I would want to go. The previous guy with the 16' never called back or responded to emails.

I like it. I personally dont like the mounted chairs as it alters the center of gravity, taller = tippier (yes that is not a word) on my 14 footer, I simply used the square "throw" PFDs as a cushion on the bench, and I always knew where they were.

Great boat. Just like our 14'. We use a set of clamp on seats like those and they are fantastic!

Whatever boat you get interested in, measure it.... If it isn't 5 feet wide keep shopping and if it doesn't have at least a 20" transom height keep shopping.... I REALLY like the idea of the 16'er.... with that size you COULD carefully take tiny with you.... just the two of you and he needs to sit fairly still but at least you COULD...... also what about storing it elsewhere..... maybe your friend would provide you parking if you picked up an even bigger boat he could comfortably go with you in??

Re: Fat guys in a little boat

I went and picked up the 16' today, its 56" wide. Didn't check the depth but looks pretty deep. Paid asking of $600 but considering its what I want I was ok with it. It came with a 27lbs trolling motor:(, I was able to go pick up a near new 5hp Briggs(I know shoulda got a "real" boat motor) but its light and 4stroke, plus its air cooled so I can start it at home over the winter and not have to worry about muffs and re-winterizing the spigot. Plus it was only $400. So all in all I'm out $1000, if all else fails when it comes season and for whatever reason its not gonna work, I should be able to get my money back and them some.

Pic of it in my garageBoat.JPG

Ill get better pics later in the season once I pull it out to get it cleaned up.

I think you did well on the 16'er. The troller as 27# isn't much on that size of boat, same for the 5HP Briggs. Eh, at least you have 2 forms of propulsion and not solely relying on gas or battery. The little Briggs will putt you along, but it's not going to plane that boat. If you want that boat to plane, look at it's capacity plate and put on an OB at least 2/3 of the plate rating, 25HP? Though, at that altitude and with a couple big guys, you'll probably need to go with an OB that matches the capacity plate rating.

What kind of fishing will you be doing? Sit and soak bait, casting, trolling? If trolling get a MK or MG digital trolling motor, yeah they are expensive, but you could go practically all day on 1 battery......

TY, Ya the 27# is kinda wimpy, I pretty much just plan on putting across the lake with the gas and trolling with the electric. We plan on doing mostly trolling light rigs, a little casting at the shoreline and also have taken to jug fishing which will be a lot more interesting now.

Re: Fat guys in a little boat

Nice choice of boat. Not a bad price for a 16' at all. The 27lb electric will be fine for re-positioning while fishing and I think you'll find it quite handy for that as opposed to firing up the gas motor every time you want to move a bit. Assuming it's a transom mount troller, and this hasn't been done already, I'd bolt a little wood pad to the gunnel near the front and mount it up there thus turning it into a poor man's bow mount. It will work much better for you up there and require less steering. I won't comment on your choice of gas motor :p:eek:

Also if you DO want to put it on the front you can turn the head around on the motor and be able to reach the handle better from inside the front of the boat

Re: Fat guys in a little boat

The big questions to be asked are....How mobile are the adults? And can they swim well? At 300-400lbs+, I doubt either would be too agile in the water if there was an emergency(esp if a child had to be cared for).

Probably not a good idea to set sail in any vessel unless it's max capacity is WELL ABOVE combined weight(passengers, gear etc) and is inherently stable.

Re: Fat guys in a little boat

I did read the whole thread. My reply was more directed at any future "larger folks" that might be considering a vessel that might be a bit on the small side.
