Re: Deck coating

Unless I read those 2links wrong jb and jig those are conflicting articles I believe the one from jig states you can foam the tank in. Obviously my original tank was foamed in and it has not leaked tank is stainless I believe not sure if that makes a difference.
I am listening to you guys because I respect your opinions and want to do this right the first time
just not sure if I took it the right way

The part that may be confusing is that Jig's info states that an aluminum tank must be properly prepped & coated prior to being foamed in. See the 4th page of his document under Installing Aluminum tanks. Most tanks are bare aluminum & shouldn't be foamed in.

Re: Deck coating

Gotcha and if my tank is stainless then there is no issue with foaming

Re: Deck coating

Better make sure the tank is stainless. Why did I (we, Jig thought so too) think the tank was aluminum?

Re: Deck coating

Do a google search for:

Marine stainless steel fuel tank foam installation

A quick scan of that info produced:
Stainless tanks are permitted. However, they are very prone to a condition called crevice corrosion, so ABYC recommends they be 20 gallons or less with domed ends. This minimizes the welds where they are most subject to corrosion. They should be mounted where they will be dry and can be inspected on all sides. Only 316L or 317L stainless should be used. As with all the above, tank regulations are manufacturer requirements.

If you decide to reuse the SS tank, I wouldn't install it foamed in place.

Re: Deck coating

Well jb your just full of good news ha ha Well I worked today so no chance to check tank but I guess with the age of the boat /tank I might as well get a new one. What would be my best option aluminum of plastic

Yeah, sorry about that.

FWIW: No boat work = no new questions = no more bad news :watermelon: So today goes in the WIN column :D

I can't speak to the preference for aluminum or plastic tanks, ultimately my decision was money motivated. Moeller plastic tanks from Evilbay, new only, not used, and MUCH under full retail.

Some have recycled tanks (aluminum & plastic) from other boats into their current project w/ great success.

Re: Deck coating

Yeah I know I appreciate even the bad news
Do you happen to have a opinion on my post 95 on page 4 about moving the lower deck forward and the upper deck back Will this cause any structural issues

If you shift that bulkhead forward, and the upper bulkhead back, you'll have to run the deck (foreground of the pix) further forward to reach the new bulkhead location, correct?

At 18-24", I don't think it'll adversely affect the structural integrity of the hull & gunwales at the bow. Nor weaken the bulkhead's structural tie across the beam of the hull.

You want more continuous deck, right?

Your plan eliminates the middle foredeck in favor of a larger upper foredeck & a larger floor deck. Right?

For what? Standing or a pedestal seat? Just be sure to make the new longer floor deck, or larger upper foredeck is strong enough for whatever you plan to use the added space for.

Re: Deck coating

If you're going to replace your tank, I'd go with plastic... no corrosion issues and below deck it won't suffer UV breakdown.

I think you'll be alright cutting the lower bow deck back as long as it isn't anymore than 2", but I don't understand why you would want to bring the top bow nose deck back and make it bigger... anything you set on the upper deck will probably go for a swim with no gunwales to stop it. Those little bow nose decks add strength to the nose and are handy for mounting trolling motors, but they are best kept small.

Did I misunderstand? I thought the deck levels were staying at the same elevation & you were moving the bulkheads fore & aft?

The deck heights are changing, making the bulkheads taller &/or shorter?

If I misunderstood, I'd probably like to change my reply above ^^^

Re: Deck coating

Re: Deck coating

actually the deck does go all the way to the front
Yes I want to put a bigger console that I have and the extra deck space would be nice
Again you are correct eliminate the middle foredeck
Also I have a windlass and the upper most deck storage area is only 9' high and the windlass requires more room then is up there
Basically there is a piece of 1/2" plywood on top of the gunwales I will just extend or replace it as seen in post 54 4th pic

Re: Deck coating

Not completely just about 18" of middle foredeck and bring upper foredeck toward the back so there is only one foredeck

Re: Deck coating

I must be explaining wrong Iwant to move the middle foredeck bulkhead 18" toward the bow and the upper foredeck toward the stern so where they meet will be one bulkhead that will go from deck to top of gunwales. hopefully I am explaining it better

Re: Deck coating

Ok after looking at the boat today I may have explained what I want to do with the fore decks incorrectly. What I would like to do is remove the middle foredeck all together and bring the upper foredeck toward the stern within 18" of where the middle foredeck is currently. This would give me a one bulkhead that is twice as tall as there is now. Hopefully that make sense
