I have about 3/4" at some points away from the hull can this be filled with pb or should I cut closer

If you are going to use PB to bed the transom plates then just put an extra thick coat of PB and use what oozes out to fill as much of the gaps as possible...then when it gets tacky, mix up some more if needed and finish filling and fileting any gaps that remain...
I wouldn't try to cut it any closer because then you will lose the correct height...
By the time it is all fileted, tabbed and laminated in place, it should be solid as Mount Olympus!;):D

Thanks gt the first 3/4'" piece of my transom is closer but being as how the hull where the plywood will attach is on a angle second piece has a larger gap. I figured I was ok but wanted to make sure

Yep, it will be fine...the only drawback is the huge amount of PB you'll use...but hey, it's only peanuts compared to the project as a whole...:watermelon:

Also my plan is to cut the wood short around drain hole and fill that area with pb so there is know wood directly near drain tube. I would like to know if I can do the same around my deck drains and the holes for the motor bolts. Say my bolts are 7/16" and I drill out a 3/4" hole fill with pb then redrill my 7/16" hole and use large washer to make sure the pressure is on the wood will this work

Yes it will work, but make sure you use some grade 8 washers or use a backing plate...similar to what I did with my stern eyes...

**1 on what HE said. Yes to lots of PB filling in your gaps around. I never minded having a bit more than usual when it came to gap, especially at the bottom, because as you've already indicated, that ensures that no wood down there in case of a compromise means no rot. It is the same principle you are getting at around your drain(s). Drill em out bigger, fill em with PB, then drill out smaller. Great workmanship, fer sure!!

No No No, They're all Wrong. Get a Micrometer and re-fabricate a new transom taking care to get it to within 1/1,000th of an inch in ALL areas of the transom. I MUST be this accurate or the boat will be RUINED!!!! Oh wait, this is NOT NASA, I'm sorry, you'll be just fine doing it as described. In fact it's the preferred method. Only thing I'd change is I'd drill a dozen 1" holes in that transom to allow the PB to ooze thru and create a "Mechanical" bond to the hull. Read my Stringer, Transom, and deck link it'll explain it and show you what I mean.

I'm glad I finished reading your post wood I was just calling MIT to hire a helper. You can be sure I have read "Fabricating Decks, Stringers, and Transoms" a hundred times Just to be clear 1/2" holes or 1" holes and how far away from existing holes in the transom should these be or does it not matter

HA!!! Glad you Read it all the way through!!!

1/2" holes!! Good Catch! I'd try to keep All holes a about 6" spacing. I don't think you need to have all that many. A dozen oughta do the job. Just lay the PB on nice and thick especially in the hole areas so it will make sure and ooze out. Scrape it off nice and smooth and use the excess to form your fillets.
