Psst: You ever get up to Weiss Lake~Leesburg area?

PM system is down, or at least since it shows I'm over the 100msg limit by about 400, I can't send/recieve a PM until I delete some, and I can't seem to delete any........

No I haven't... but I've always threatened to and should have.

I fish Lake Neely Henry directly below it and Logan Martin below Neely, all are the Coosa river chain.

Leesburg is 50 mi. and a 1 hr drive, Logan and Neely are 15 min. from my house with pretty much the same fish.

I am going to fish Weiss lake one of these days... but I have to catch all of the fish out of Neely and Logan first!:watermelon:

What size rivets did you use again on the decking? Also, you recommend the 3/4 plywood for the decking instead of the 1/2? I thought it was stated here somewhere earlier but I couldn't find it.

I used 1/4" diameter aluminum open end blind rivets, the length/grip range of the rivet depends on the thickness of the plywood. I suggest 1/4" longer than the plywood thickness.

1/2" plywood is wimpy and won't support pedestal seats well without a backing plate or some kind of under deck reinforcing.

5/8" plywood is good and 3/4" is best for a strong build... my boat has 3/4" decking and is rock solid.

jig, where is the best local place to get the rivets you use? HD or Lowes? Fastenal?

My local HD and Lowes don't even carry rivets... and Fastenal has to order them.

I buy all of my rivets at Jay-Cees online, they have a huge selection of just about any kind of rivet you could dream of.

Just a bump in case anyone cares to take a look or post a reply... with only 2 days until the dreaded 90 day mark, heaven forbid anyone should come across this thread after it expires and reply and break rule #12.;)

Another bump in case anyone wants to take a look-see, comment, or has a question since the 90 day limit has passed.

BTW, I'll be trying my hand at f'glass resto when the weather warms up so stay Tuna-ed for that.;)

what type of epoxy resin did you use and how far does it go? I estimate I will have somewhere between 2 to 3 sheets of plywood in varying sized pieces in my build by the time I'm done. Also did you put anything on the inside of your compartments? I'm going to build mine out of wood and was thinking of lining them with vinyl if I had enough left.

I'm going to trim my lids similar to yours. I noticed earlier in the thread where you added some close up pictures of you lid trim, but i appears they have been moved and no longer show up in the thread. Any way you could get those back up?

Thanks Cody

I don't know what Jig used, but I recarpeted in 2013 and used Sherwin Williams Tile Clad. It seemed to do a good job of sealing over the old checked plywood. It is a 2 part epoxy paint and a gallon each of part and a part b cost about $150. I had a little left over. Some of the decking took 3 coats and other pieces I got by with two. BTW, thanks again Jig. This was the best DIY thread in the history of the internet.

To answer some of your questions:

1. I like this resin:

The 635 thin really penetrates the wood on the first and second coats for deep protection and the 3:1 hardener is pretty easy to work with. For the amount of wood you're going to have a 1 gallon kit should be plenty. The 1 gallon kit is actually 1.33 gallons when the resin and hardener are mixed together, 1 gal. resin and 42 oz. hardener.

2. As you can see in these 2 pics and post #12 of my thread, I lined my storage compartments with closed cell camping/sleeping bag pad for sound deadening and cushioning for stored items:

3. To install the angle trim on the hatches, I put the angle on after the hatches were wrapped in vinyl:

Before the angle.

After the wrap.

I mitered the angle at the corners:

I used 3/16 diameter closed end blind rivets with a countersunk head to attach the angles to the hatch lids, a fairly tedious task with lots of drilling and countersinking with the rivets on about 3" centers for a sturdy installation. You can find those rivets at a place called rivets online on the net, not many places carry the countersunk head rivets.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask and I'll try to help the best I can.[

Jigngrub,

Thanks for all the info. Sorry for the double post, one here and one on the moderator created thread. I'll keep my questions here in the future so that others can see your answers as well. I actually got the floor and a portion of the deck cut last night. I'm going to get me some epoxy ordered and on its way so I have it when I'm ready.

After taking a closer look, I just realized that your compartment lids are all aluminum with a lip to which to attach the rivets. I am building a new deck out of the plywood and will be cutting compartment lids out of the deck. I will have to come up with a little different attachment method as I really like the look of the angle with the vinyl.

Once again great job on the boat and I'm sure I'll have more questions as I get along.

Bumping this up again because some folks have asked about the deck vinyl and in case someone else wants to take a look.

I redid my 1999 Pro Deep using the spray on liner called Tuff Coat and i was very happy with the way it adhered and creates a non slip grip. Prep was the key......however the fit and finish of my new deck is nothing what Jig had completed. I tried to get the aluminum angle mitered at the corners and it turned into a nightmare! The covers all fit loosely and rattle when i'm underway. I riveted the angle to the inside verticle wall of the lid as to have the angle sitting at a 90 degree as pictured in Jig's pics. It just came out horrible. I don;t know what to do. Should i rip it apart and redo it or just try and get those drop in plastic hatch covers and use those for a cleaner finish. I usually never have any issues with projects like this

Did you reuse your old decking or buy new? Did you compensate your hatch opening size for going from carpet to the much thinner painted on finish?

What did you use to miter your aluminum angle with? What thickness angle did you use? Maybe your hatch covers weren't "square"?

Some pics of what you have would help, but I understand if you'd rather not post any.

The plastic drop in covers would be a good fix, but I don't know if you could find all the sizes you need.
