Amazing work Jig, just incredible. I never saw this thread before. I just love some of your ideas.

Thanks for the kind words jc, I try to do good work just like you do.

... now if I could just paint as well as you do.;)

Did you reuse your old decking or buy new? Did you compensate your hatch opening size for going from carpet to the much thinner painted on finish?

What did you use to miter your aluminum angle with? What thickness angle did you use? Maybe your hatch covers weren't "square"?

Some pics of what you have would help, but I understand if you'd rather not post any.

The plastic drop in covers would be a good fix, but I don't know if you could find all the sizes you need.

Jig i suck at posting pics, lol some day i will get it right. I used the old decking and i knew i shouldn't have. I never gave enough compensation for the removal of the carpet and the thin paint on liner =( I may say f**k it and get new wood and start over. I love your boat and wish i took more time. I know better than that. Anyway, maybe i'll just vinyl it like you did. I'll let u know. The mitre saw i used is the same as yours but i didn't use the Diablo blade with the higher count teeth. I ended up using a file to clean up my corners.

Jig, beautiful work! I have a '99 Polarkraft Bass America that I will be redoing this winter, and your work is definitely a goal to shoot for. I'm currently debating between vinyl and durabak. The Polarkraft has all aluminum decking with some plywood reinforcement, so there may be some differences. I won't know for sure until I get the old carpet off and see what I am really working with. Did you give any thought to a color change on your console cap when you took out the carpet? Mine is an ugly tan and has started to crack, so I plan on glassing it and changing to a dark gray.

Thanks for the compliments folks.

Cloudrnnr, I didn't think about a color change until after I had already bought all the material and was installing it. Then I thought a 2 tone combo would've been nice by making the vertical vinyl a darker or lighter shade than the flat decks, maybe I'll do that to the next boat I restore.

No, I left the carpet on the gunwales, it's still in pretty good shape and I didn't have enough vinyl left over to do them.

Solvent based contact cement with absolutely no bleed through, and it takes two coats of contact cement on the porous backing of the vinyl. The epoxy coated wood only requires one coat of contact cement.

I can't find any posts from jigngrub since 2015. Did he leave the forums? I'm redoing my Tracker, and this forum post is really great. Awesome and inspiring job.

Thanks for all the details you laid out. All of the advice is still great, and even the materials and sourcing you used still seems to be the cheapest options still.

He left. He wasn't and isn't the source of great advice and help.
