You're rapidly running out of stuff to rivet Astor!!! Should be all ready to splash as soon as the ice clears! Looks awesome!

I still have to rivet the side shelfs in and the splash well, so I'm down to 20 or so solid rivets left to do.

And I still haven't figured out the plan for the hull - paint or polish

Hope to be able to flip the hull over yet this week.

Nothing was easy today, everything took 3x longer than I expected.
got trim installed around the bilge, but snapped one the screws off, and I didn't realize that the original plywood wasn't cutoff flush with the stringers, it must have overlapped a couple of inches either side as the battery box/oil reservoir shelf doesn't fit, so I will have to make a new one.

Got the foam glued together and cut out for the side shelfs, I had saved the original styrofoam, but I left the shed doors open last summer and my golden retriever pup chewed them both up into a million pieces, I was only able to salvage a 3' piece.

and I noticed the side shelfs stickout about 1-1/4" further than the inside of the gunwales. Doesn't quite seem right.

haven't attached the transom yet, because i only have 5200, not 5200Fast Cure, and I'm not gonna heat the shop for a week in these temps for the regular 5200 to cure. So I will have to either order some or stop at West Marine and pick some up for $$$.

Do you plan on putting the padding back on the gunwales?

I guess the benefit of having them protrude a bit is for easier access when standing:

plus, you can fit a ton of foam in that cavity!

Lookin' good! :thumb:

Yep, planning on putting the upholstered side panels back in, after I re-upholster them.

I see that the side shelfs are supposed to stickout a bit from the gunwales, but it just doesn't look right, it puts the gunwales and the side shelfs on two different planes, and then you are supposed to screw or rivet the upholstered panels to it??? It just looks like a sloppy design. I would rather see the side shelf and gunwales have a slope or angle to them so the side panel can be attached flat to both surfaces.

Ahh here i go again over thinking it.

didn't do much this past week, but figured I share a few other pics.

here's how I heat the workshop- it burns corn or wood pellets.

and this is the next project, My Dad started this cedarstripper a couple of years ago. He passed away last year, so when the starcraft is done, I will finish this one, and hopefully make this a group project with a few of my brothers.

You heat your shop with carp bait! Does it smell when it burns?

Sorry to hear about your late father. He was one heck of a craftsman...beautiful work!

Thanks guys! The canoe project is gonna be cool, the old man put some time into it, and I couldn't bear to just cut it up. It'll be a great project to finish.

The corn does have a bit of a nice sweet popcorny kind of smell to it when its burning, but you don't smell it in the shop, only outside where it vents.

Sorry about your loss. His life now continues in this project, and that my friend is a great choice you made.

A workmate said he was selling one of those pellet stoves for $400. Comes with a pallet full of pellets. I didn't think that was a bad deal. They say they are real efficiant and put out some good heat. Keep plugging away. Looks like you might be able to splash somtime this spring?

Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

Thanks for the kind comments InMotion, Dozer and spegtoast, I'll really enjoy finishing Dad's project canoe. It'll have a lot of meaning and never leave the family, at least this generation.

The corn/wood pellet furnace is pretty slick but also pretty manual, and can run about 2 days before you have to clean out the firebox, daily if you burn corn. And there is no thermostatic control, it has two feed augers that can be set at 5 different speeds and two fan speeds. with both augers on low it can maintain about 65F in 20F weather, and burn around 30-40lbs of wood pellets or corn per day. I buy the pellets at Menards, for about $180/ton. So it can heat the 30x50x12' shop for less than $90/month if you run it continuously.

Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

i like the heat source. i could be more sympathetic on the work it takes, given that i heat my bedroom with a regular wood stove, which requires cleaning out every day or 2.

i REALLY REALLLY love the canoe, and your continuation of dad's project.

great work on the SS so far Astor! love the fact that you are going to finish your Dad's canoe as well. It looks really sweet. Oh, and your corn/pellet stove seems pretty efficient compared to my kerosene heater...

Hey astor, thought it was time I let you know, I have to confess about how I stared at your hull stiffeners for 10 minutes while you were out on the beer run.

Bluefin already knows about it so at least he'll understand...:lalala:

Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

No progress in the past several weeks, work, work, work, and then ice fishing all last weekend. It was a great time, first time in a few years that there was enough ice to fish on, had over 12-14" on the lakes in southern MI. Good beer good friends and the perch and bluegill fish fry was awesome. May be able to get another weekend of ice fishing in early-mid February, as it looks like we are gonna have the extreme cold hit for at least another week.

Will get back on the boat this weekend. Looks like 5200 does setup in the cold, just needs some moisture.

I Also have been eyeballing another boat project, an older glasser that looks cool, if I can work a good deal I really want to bring it home.
