Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

No progress in the past several weeks, work, work, work, and then ice fishing all last weekend. It was a great time, first time in a few years that there was enough ice to fish on, had over 12-14" on the lakes in southern MI. Good beer good friends and the perch and bluegill fish fry was awesome. May be able to get another weekend of ice fishing in early-mid February, as it looks like we are gonna have the extreme cold hit for at least another week.

Will get back on the boat this weekend. Looks like 5200 does setup in the cold, just needs some moisture.

I Also have been eyeballing another boat project, an older glasser that looks cool, if I can work a good deal I really want to bring it home.

No pictures, did it really happen??;) Down time fishing, even hard water fishing is a good reason to not work on the boat. Glad you had a great time.

More than enough ice of ice fishing this season and by the looks of the forecast more ice is being made by the minute. Showing it is -14 here this morning. At least the ice and snow should help the level of the Great Lakes. Guy I work with has been hitting up the lower end of Lk St Clair and has been slaying the perch. He brought me 2 zip lock bags full of fillets and I can't wait to get them in the fry pan.

Man you guys have it rough there, I enjoy our mild winters here in WA. Now way I would want to endure sub zero temps like that.At least you have a nice shop to work on your SS if you get the urge.

Well Jas, I'm beginning to think we may not get on the water till May at this rate. I enjoyed launching in March chasing spring silver. Weather guessers saying temps will be holding below freezing and minuses through next Wednesday!!!! Maybe we should be building ice breakers instead.

This is the only picture I have of the ice fishing, that's me running my brothers kids out on the ice. The little guys, really got into the fishing.

Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

just saved 5% ordering polishing supplies at caswell's. A couple of days ago I entered my order, shipping address, email, etc... but didn't complete the order because I didn't have my credit card with me. Today they send me an email and give me a coupon code (CR-N851484B) to save 5% on my order if I will complete the order within 5 days.

Ok so it was only a $5 savings but I'll take it. That's $5 I can use on my order at iboats for my transom drain.

Score, $5 is $5. Lunch or drain tubes. I need to remember to do that wait the next time I need to order something online.

Watching the news the other day, they were talking about internet sales, and how they track many customers who reach the checkout box, then back out. They were considering different marketing stratagies on how to get the customer to follow through with the final step of the sale. It appears caswells is catching on.

Finally got to spend some time on the boat again. Work has been crazy again this year.

Finished the side shelfs, used a HF hot knife to cutout the foam for the drink holders,

and got them riveted in.

Just have to run a few dozen stainless steel screws in to mount the ski locker cover and side shelfs to the deck, then the boat gets flipped over for some stripping and polishing. The Caswell's order should be here next week.

Gonna also try my hand at sewing up the upholstery for the side panels, my mother has a commercial duty sewing machine that should be just perfect for the task, now I just have to figure out how to sew. Can't be too hard, its just another power tool that I'll have to learn to master.

Nice work on the side pieces & cup holders.

It is a walking foot, but I must admit I don't know much about it,,,, yet.

Youtube has LOTs of great videos

You can PM WoodOnGlass if you have any sewing questions. A good number of iboaters stitching their own these days, so you shouldn't have any problems that can't get a quick answer.

Looking good! :encouragement:

Hey I like how the inside panels of the SS are aluminum and how yours are stuffed with foam board.

Thanks BF, ya work is crazy, we seem to b always overloaded, understaffed, and with impossible deadlines, I find that the time alone working on the boat is like an escape, I can ignore emails, pick and choose the phone calls I take, have some beer and then some more beer and just relax and enjoy working on it.

I had to post a pic showing using clecos, as this is starting to look like a hillbilly airplane building forum, with all guys doing the aluminum fab, clecos, and riveting.

Yep, I've already been watching a bunch of youtube videos, doesn't look too difficult, and since I've got access to a "marine upholstery assembly machine" -why not try it. Thanks for the tip, I will certainly take a look at WoodOnGlass's threads and see what he and others have done.

Yep, the 87 SS already had lots of foam in it, but I'm making sure its got every cubic inch I can squeeze in there. There's already white styrofoam up under the gunwales, and I'll replace the foam blocks under either side of the splash well with the pink stuff too. Its relatively cheap and easy stuff to work with. each 2" 4'x8' sheet gives you 5.33ft^3 of foam and I think I can get almost 5 sheets packed in there before I'm done. which will displace over 1600lbs of water, should give me plenty of floatation if I ever get stupid out on Erie with such a small boat.
