Thanks, I will try that, and I think I reduce to two coats of epoxy as well.

Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

I'm still moving on this project, just very very slow. It took nearly a month to put 5 coats of spar on each side of the plywood decking.

I used 1/2" plywood to keep the consoles lined up with the gunwales, but I wasn't liking the flex between the two center stringers. So I glued/screwed another sheet of 1/2" to the bottom side of the deck giving me 1" thick between the stringers, and used 1/2x3/4 aluminum angle riveted to the stringers to support it. It really stiffened up the deck nicely.

Riveted the decking and counter sunk the rivets so they wouldn't show under the Nautolex.

yeah, it's looking great. you'll be glad you did the countersinking as i suspect it will extend life of the n'lex too. glad i'm not the only one who takes forever to put enough coats of goopage on

Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

Started the repair to the cracked knee brace. The picture shows only 2 of the rivets installed, I wanted to figure out how many rivets I needed before I punched the brace full of holes. With 5/32" solid rivets, 5 per side should allow it to carry 5000# in shear.

It was a challenge to get a bucking bar inside the brace to rivet. I already dropped it once and had to use a magnet to fish it out. I will trim the aluminum angle after all the rivets are installed.

^^ :hungry: You're eating that stuff up Astor! Ambitious using solid rivets w/ the kneebrace still attached!

I'll be using a similar approach...but when I drop the bucking bar I just have to pick it up off of my workbench :p

Coming along nicely astor, as BF said that is a tough job solid riveting to the knee brace on the boat. You must be using a custom bucking bar.

Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

thanks guys, would be much easier to do with the knee brace removed.

Glen, I did use a chunk of steel and a round bar for the bucking bar, used the round bar to apply some leverage on the steel.

Warming up the shop to glue the vinyl down. Any suggestions for putting it down solo?

Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

Most all the time I am stuck with working solo, to glue the vinyl down I get in the exact position I want it then weight one side with heavy weights cinder block bricks of the best is heavy steel plates. Pull the other side back over the weighted side put your glue down, the slowly lay the glued side back down. I use a formica roller to work out any bubbles. Once your happy with the first side remove your weights and do the easy side. Hope that helps.

I knew I was forgetting something. Still time for a beer run while the shop heats up. It's just hitting 58F now.

Yes weights are what I'm missing. That duct tape just wasn't going to hold it good enough, Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

got the vinyl glued down, used the nautolex glue, it worked ok but if I were to do it over again, I would use something else. It was too $$, it took too long to get tacky. But on the positive side there is very little odor to it.

Vinyl looks good. I can't imagine that was an easy job solo. I used the Weldwood contact cement on mine and the set up time was rather quick but the aroma and contact buzz were the downside.

Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

It actually went down easier than expected.

Used a few 2x12s and duct tape to hold it in place. Flipped half of it back on the 2x12s gave me a nice flat surface to apply the adhesive to the back side of the vinyl.
Took over an hour to tack-up. Which I guess was good. As it gave me plenty of time.

I tried lifting a corner today and it seems to be verybtightly adhered So maybe the Nautolex adhesive isn't so bad for a solo job.
