Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

You guys sound like you have been breathing helium with the fast forward on grinding in your video , but it sure is looking good. The out drive is still attached??, sure seems like a lot of debris is entering that area, perhaps there's a reason it's still there through the restoration. Sorry if this was discussed already, I didn't read the entire thread on your project. Looks like you are doing a great job!!

Wow, it has been a couple of months since the last series of updates . . . I was wondering how things were going. Ditto what Wood said about the mask. I use a 3M Tekk respirator . . . Seems to work pretty well and not too pricey.

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

greenbush future - the out drive is out!! 86 Sea Ray Restoration Day 3 Clip 2 Outdrive Removal - YouTube Yea there is a lot of crap in that area but my electrical connections are bagged up and clean. I think it was georgesalmon and then jayboat66 that told me about keeping the electrical connectors protected. Soon I will have everything all cleaned up as I will be prepping for glass :)

Woodonglass - ahhh, what can I say, you are my most favorite Okie of all times!!! :) LOL and you are correct as always! My son tagged along so l let him wear my respirator and I used the paper masks for that one day, I should pick up a second respirator, just to have it ready when needed, im also gonna keep my eyes open for a used shopvac, i know its a little late now but ima get one anyway

tpenfield - I have a nice respirator but like I was telling wood, im gonna pick up an extra one, especially now that i will soon be fiber glassing, i know that stuff is toxic

Hey guys, I need a little hand holding here, I think im going to go with US Composites unless anybody has a better idea. Im making a list to have ready before i talk to their sales department about materials. I want to appear as though im not a total noob when i call to make the order! LOL I have an idea of whats needed but don't have a clue on the quantities. Any alternatives and all suggestions are appreciated :) i know this isnt going to be perfect but it will get me started

Layup
435 Standard Polyester Layup Resin (Marine Grade Resin) 10 or 15 gallons? or more?
DBM 1708 Biaxial how many yards?
Chopped Strand Mat how many yards? should I get 3/4oz?, 1 1/2oz? or 2oz?

Peanutbutter
1/4 or 1/2 inch size Chopped Strand Shreds? How many pounds?
Aerosil-Cabosil (Fumed Silica) (Aer-o-sil 200) how much? i can get it in quarts, gallons and 10 pound bags

Other Stuff
Polyurethane Pour Foam how much? what density? i can get 2lb, 3lb, 4lb, and 8lb densities
they have a faq im gonna read over and im also gonna get my son to help me, hes a math wiz
im also gonna order chip brushes, rollers, and plastic spreaders from them as well

Im currently checking around locally for marine grade plywood so i can make a decision on that, if marine grade isnt viable i have to figure out my 2nd and third choices, i remeber somebody saying pine and douglas fur but i need to research this and see what i come up with

Thank you all!!!

Ok, since you were protecting your son by letting him wear the good respirator, you're officially "Off the Okie, Bad List!!!!" Having two of em would be a good idea!!!! Shop Vac is another good one. This link will be a good one for your materials...

I'd reduce the CSM to 15 yds cuz I now don't think you need to use a layer of it before laying the 1708. Since it has CSM stitched to it, if you precoat the wood like you should and the wood is not extremely rough then the CSM already on the 1708 should be enough to yield a good bond to the wood. This will save a lot of CSM and a lot of resin. Every thing else should get you started but you will probably need more resin before you're done. Most guys end up using between 20-25 gallons and some even more but they may be doing more structural work than you will be doing. You may actually get by with 15 gallons especially if you don't get resin crazy. Most beginners use way to much resin. You only need to use enuf to wet out the glass and make it go clear. You can always add more. REMEMBER THAT!!!!;):D

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

I know this was a question for Wood, but I will give you some thoughts. That PVC pipe in the bow could have had several applications on different models. Many boat manufacturers will use the same hull for different models. Just by using a different deck mold (cap) you could make a run-a-bout, or a fishing boat, or ?. PVC is nice because its cheap, won't rot, and stands up to resin. That could be a drain for an anchor locker or wire chase or anything else in a different model. I think you can just leave it and not worry. Just added an electric brake control in my truck and the wiring was already there, just capped off. Same with boats, sometimes its just easier to put stuff in for optional equipment in every model even if its not always used. FWIW

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

Goldie- I have not had the chance to catch up on your videos yet, but I wanted to chime in about US Composites. I just ordered some resin and some foam from them . . . About $500 in total. Good stuff and prompt delivery. I also have seen some resin and other material here on iBoats, so check prices, etc.. Shipping will add about 20-25% to the overall cost, so factor that in.

i think you will be looking at quite a few gallons of resin and maybe 20 cubic feet of foam. Lots of cloth. Some of the guys have posted ordering guidelines on previous threads, so probably do some searching.

when you get to using the stuff, my advice is to use small batches of resin. The most resin that I have mixed/used at one time is about 24 ounces (2 beers). That way you do not run the risk of having the resin harden on you as you are working.

I made that mistake once on some epoxy resin . . . Expensive

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

Speak - Thank you for the nice compliment :) The boat is a lot of hard work but it will be worth it in the end. I just keep thinking about all the fishing trips and fun times to come with family and friends. Yea, my son is a real funny guy! LOL (he thinks he is! :)) my brother and his kids are all comedians too, so whenever we all get together fun times are guaranteed :)

Georgesalmon - Hey George! always a pleasure to hear from you. I was going over some of my pics and I noticed that the top of that pvc pipe was enclosed, making a one ended drain pipe somewhat useless for me. However, what you said makes perfect sense, on another boat with an anchor storage, that pipe would be perfect. I've decided to leave it.

tpenfield - So far it looks like I'm going with US Composites as well. I appreciate your recommendation, I've only heard good things about them. Thanks for the resin mixing tip, but in my neighborhood two beers is 80 ounces!! LOL

I'm working on my US Composites shopping list, if anybody has any tweaking or suggestions for the list, please let me know. Also, CSM comes in 38" or 50" widths and 1708 comes in 38" or 40" widths, what width should I order?

15 Gallons 435 Standard Polyester Layup Resin (Marine Grade Resin) $375.00
25 Yards 1-1/2oz Chopped Strand Mat
25 Yards DBM 1708 Biaxial
10 LB Bag Aerosil-Cabosil $067.00
10 LB Bag 1/4 Chopped Strand Fibers $026.00
2 Dozen 1 Quart Plastic Mixing Buckets $016.80
2 1/2" x 5" Economy Fiberglass "Bubble" Roller $007.80
1 1/4" Fiberglass Corner Roller $008.85
1 3/8" Fiberglass Corner Roller $008.85
Pack of 50 Wooden Paddle Stir Sticks $003.95
2 Dozen 3" Bristle Chip Brushes $017.30

2 LB Density Urethane Foam
(U.S. Coast Guard Compliant Marine Foam)
Gotta figure out how much to order...

Your kin ain't the only funny ones.

Great job on the restore, Goldie. I completed replacing my transom last year, and had to cut out about a foot of the stringers and a couple of feet of the floor so mine wasn't nearly as much work. I admire ya'll total restore guys. I would just be overwhelmed. Here's raising a '40' to ya!

Goldie, once again Your videos are great. The way you capture your work thru video is on par with frisco Jay. Im sure your workmanship will be as well. I think your lap joint will be strong enough but you could sister up a piece beside for good measure. Once you glass it all in it should be strong as hell. Its funny every day when i drive to work I do the same thing you do. I talk to myself about what I have done and what I need to still do. Only difference is I dont record it. Thoroughly enjoy your videos, thanks cheers bro.
