Making good progress! Although I found the grinding to be the most unpleasant part of my project, The most nerve-wracking part was going at my boat with a Sawzall and a circular saw. Looks like you're diving right in!

Love your updates and kudos to your photographer! Great pictures of you working!

jbcurt00 - Yup, full steam ahead!

JASinIL2006 - Thanks Jim, Yea I was a nervous wreck till I figured out to saws-all two inches from the hull first, then trench out the foam, then curve your saws-all blade, this allows you to see what your doing, with this method you can practically lay the blade on the hull getting nice and close. I discovered this method by accident! lol

You are doing great job, when you finished the project your boat is going to be like new. I will say better than was made originally.

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

I think my favorite part so far is the awesome broom repair. Really quick thinking in the face of an impending disaster, LOL.
Keep em coming, Enjoy these videos with my morning coffee. Your doing a great job. I might suggest you get all the wiring and such out of your way. It's just gonna be in the way the whole time, and there is always a chance of damage. With all your pictures and by marking the ends it would be a snap to put it back in correctly when the time comes. Keep up the good work.

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

Georgesalmon is right, take the wire harness out of your way the fiberglass dust and resin can get into the terminals or connector and will be a nightmare for you when you try to start the engine. Avoid false ground, clean the connector before you plug them in.

I am thinking to do the same you did to cover my boat in the winter to avoid snow accumulation on top.

Looking good :thumb:

I need to catch up on the videos, but I did get a laugh from the "building permit" comment. Rain certainly is a pain when trying to do a restoration or repair, because you need things to stay dry. Your tarp structure looks good . . . you may want to keep it in the taller 'mode' as it may tend to shed water better.

Georgesalmon - That is so funny, I was thinking the same things about the broom and the wiring :) I am so happy you are enjoying the vids! My buddy Scott is the executive lead mechanic in the restoration :) We talked about the wiring. In an upcoming video you will see the wiring harness blown out and covered with a zip baggy. Also, all the wires will be unscrewed and situated neatly for complete access to the transom area. Thanks for the tips.

Jayboat66 - You will not be disappointed with the 1/2 inch pvc. It's light, strong, convenient, effective and inexpensive. Thanks for the wiring tips.

tpenfield - Welcome back to the thread. Yea, Scott is a comedian! :)

Nice work. I remember those days well. Took me two years before I even wanted to put back on a respirator or tyvex suit. Keep up the good work. It will pay off come spring!

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

ShellBack89 - Thank you for your kind words of encouragement, I'm anticipating spring like a kid anticipates Christmas!

Ten hour shifts this week at work so no boat till this weekend :(

I need some advise... I will soon be taking out the rear stringers where they attach to the transom. If the transom turns out to be good, how do I prep the bottom of the transom to tie in to the new stringers? Should I de-skin the transom bottom below the transom plate? or leave as much of the old glass on as I can? Any advise is welcome! I'm lost...

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

Siphoning the gas out is always one of those preparation steps . . . I thought that you had already done it. When I did my 24 footer, it had a 94 gallon tank that had to come out. It was foamed in and took me about 2 weeks to get it out.

The rubber strips are used to keep the tank from direct contact with the hull. You should do some web searching on the various methods for fuel tank installation, as improper installation can cause problems and lead to failure of the tank and leaking gas. Basically the tank should not be in direct contact with the hull , nor the stringers, nor any bulkheads.

You can also to a pressure test of the tank to make sure it has no holes. pinholes, leaks, etc. The typical pressure test is about 3 psi (only) . . . so something like a bicycle air pump would be good. Don't use air from a compressor or anything like that, as it is too hard to regulate at low pressure, and the tank could pop like a balloon.

I'm currently doing a bulkhead replacement project on my 33 footer, and have been inspired by your videos. :thumb: So, I have done a similar thing to document the project.

As far as the transom . . . if it is good wood and good glass just leave it and grind the surface a bit where needed to rough it up a bit for good adhesion of additional layers of glass.

At that point your probably pretty much done talking to chics all together! LOL

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

Sounds like you guys were huffing some helium in clip 2 :D

Rolling right along tho......taking out all the wires back there may seem intimidating not knowing the where come from, but when you figure it all out in the end, you will know all of it inside and out.....I have no idea how to put my hydraulics back together......yet :)
