Goldie - nice progress and I enjoyed the ice cream break :D

I was wondering how the tank looked when you took it out, in terms of corrosion or pits that may have formed? (I may have missed it in your earlier posts). The tank looks OK in the videos, but just wondering if you found any issues with it?

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

Woodonglass - My buddy Scott is a mechanic for the school district! I told him I hope all that yellow wasn't making him feel like he was at work! :) I just found out from us composites my order is going to be around $1100.00. With that said I'm seriously thinking about replacing the transom. I think its good but after spending that kind of money I should just do the whole darn thing. The last time i was grinding i noticed that the wood was hard but really dark brown under the transom and no skin at all, just raw wood in a small area. I know that the front of the transom is hard from top to bottom, but what if water has wicked to the back of the transom (the out drive side) where i cant see it? Ahhh, to have xray vision! I think i could get away with peanut butter and my original plan but for the first time im doubting myself. Im gonna take one more look and make a decision.

tpenfield - When I took the gas tank out, it was dirty and showing large sections of bare metal on the bottom. I didn't see any corrosion, leaks, holes or deep pits. There were pits but they seemed small to me. After three coats of primer it smoothed out pretty good. After reading your post I found a place that will pressure test it for me, better to be safe than sorry. Especially because I plan to have the deck cover the gas tank. I really wanted to leave the hatch over the gas tank but unfortunately there is no practical way to accomplish this. There is no way I know to lay fiberglass in the edges where the gas tank hatch and deck would meet. Also, I really don't want to screw threw the hatch into the cleats. Furthermore, there would be a seem around the gas tank hatch, to me thats just asking for trouble. Even with my limited knowledge there are far more reasons to cover than not cover the gas tank with the deck. If there is a plausible way to maintain the current design please let me know. I'll update you on the pressure test when i get the tank back, thanks for the heads up! :)

Drill some holes into it from the inside and check the shavings. If they are dry then you're good to go and there's really no need. You can if you want and it won't be to much work or $$$'s to do it. Totally your decision. I DO like the School Bus Yellow Tank!!! To bad you'll be Covering it up so nobody will see it!!!:blue:

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

I think this us compostites order has me really paranoid, doubting everything and overly cautious. I took a second look at the transom with the intention of taking samples, however, when I got there, the sides and keyhole part of the transom are dry and solid. The bottom is also dry and solid, just discolored in that one spot under the transom. The transom really looks solid, just like i've known all along, so i'm gonna stop second guessing myself and move forward. These questions will put the transom to rest once and for all...

Will peanut butter stick to this brown spot under the transom? Im only asking this a second time because i wasnt sure if woodonglass was aware that it was discolored, its like a redish brown color. Though it is dry and hard as a rock.

Will there be enough room to tab the transom after PB? There is only about 1 inch on the transom below the gimbal housing. All the rebuilds ive seen have about a 6 inch tab, three inches on the transom and three inches on the hull.
Day24Clip1.mp4_snapshot_01.15_[2014.05.08_18.34.02].jpg

How do you seal/protect the transom wood where the keyhole is?
Day24Clip1.mp4_snapshot_02.02_[2014.05.08_18.39.12].jpg

Can I PB the entire area under the transom all at once?

Is there a limit to the thickness of a void that is filled with PB? I only ask cause sometimes fillers have a maximum thickness to dry properly and therefor are layered to build up to the desired thickness.

Thanks guys, this purchase has me stressed out. I think i'll be a lot less paranoid when my shipment gets here and the restoration continues full steam ahead.

You can PB that area under the transom and form a nice coved fillet so the final tabbing will flow right out on to the hull. NO PROBLEMO!!!!

Great job,Great thread.
I think the only way to seal the keyhole is going to be to pull the housing.I just don't think theirs enough room in their to cover it properly.
I think your making the right call on the transom.

Goldie, your transom looks fine. One thing thou. it would take nothing to pull the gimble and transom plate off then you could clean off the rest of that grey paint, and seal that inner key hole properly. I dont know if that makes sense but maybe it does. Also when I first started working with PB I was nervous too, but its easy to shape and based on your workmanship you will do just fine. Honestly you are over thinking it........I think --LOL. Anyway, the fun is just around the corner, and when you start to glass you will now what I mean. Its a love hate relationship this fiberglass thing we do. I love doing it but I curse the entire time. Nasty sticky smelly fiber sticking every where stuff!! Cant wait for your videos on the glassing. Over and out. Stu

Goldie, your job looks great. I think if you place 1708 (2 or 3 layers) the transom will be ok.

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

Woodonglass - Thanks wood, as always you are appreciated! Our school bus got dunked!!!

produceguy - Welcome to my project! Thank you for the advise, the gimbal housing and transom plate are coming off today!

Speak - Thanks man, this project went from fun to serious when I spent almost $1500.00 at us composites! lol that purchase put me on edge, second guessing everything and worrying for nothing. Im back to my normal self now :) Im actually looking forward to glassing, anything is better than grinding!

Jayboat66 - Hey man, good to hear from you, how have you been? :) I think it will be ok too. Normally, we overlap our tabbing, but in my case there isn't much room to overlap, so I haven't figured out the tabbing plan for that area under the transom yet. At this point the only thing im sure of is peanut buttering the void under the transom. Im not sure to overlap the tabbing by half inch or just stack it exactly on top of eachother... anyways... take care and thanks for the compliment!

Something that helped me was to take alot of pics of how the houseing and steering arm is connected before starting to take her apart. Sure makes it easier when putting it back together.
Great news on your tank.

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

I sure wish you'd post questions before you Jumped in with both feet sometimes!!! It would make your life easier sometimes!!!:sorry:

What you shoulda done was taken a circular saw set to about 1/16 less than the depth of that wood and cut a series of cuts all over that transom. Lots of cuts in all directions. And Then use the hammer and chisel to remove the wood. It would have been a lot easier and faster to get it off the skin. Man Oh Man, guess I'm gunna have to move to Chicago and babysit you!!!!

Great JOB!!! I BET YOU DID SLEEP WELL!!!!! Glad to see those gloves and mask on!!!! We'll make a iBoats Restoration Guru out of you yet!!!:joyous:

WOG is right... I got tired just watching that, even in 'hyper-speed' mode. It's good that your not intimidated from just attacking all these steps and getting it done, I guess. You'll be ready for the water before you know it! You might be too tuckered out to actually go boating, though!

:D Just kidding, you're doing great. Love watching your progress.
