Grind until you have an all fresh glass surface, Remove any wood remnants, and loose glass or resin. Just need a good solid roughed up surface, no shine. Don't need it perfectly flat. Where your going to put new glass you need to grind most of the gray gel or (often called bilge paint) off. Not every last speck, just most of it.

You might want to pull a few bolts in the transom and check for bad wood in the holes. Water does get in around them and looking at the outside edges of the transom isn't the whole story. IMHO

I'm not sure I see any advantage to grinding off the bottom of the transom, it will be hard to roll glass around there. If your going to leave the transom in just pack some PB in the ends and seal it up with new glass after you round everything off nice and smooth. Its not delaminating, those are just "wild hairs" from a chopper gun that weren't rolled down real well because its hard to roll in a tight spot where you can't see. Best way to grind in a tight spot like that is with a nice piece of 36 or 40 grit sandpaper and your hands,,,,,

Transom looks good. Fallow the advice of Georgesalmon. About the space on the bottom of the transom, apply PB and call it good.

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

Messy part of the job, all that grinding and dust, does not look like fun.

I know that I have not followed the videos and commentary as closely as others on this thread, so my apologies if this has been covered.

But . . .

I have been wondering what is the plan for rebuilding and replacing all of the structure and compartments that have been taken out, both in the sole of the hull (stringers, etc.) and up in the bowrider section of the boat? Did you take lots of measurements and/or save the pieces that you cut out?

Just wondering :noidea:

The wood block for the bow eye backup looks good from here, I'd leave all that alone. That pvc pipe must be to channel water down to the bilge, I'd just leave that alone to. The bow nav light wires weren't inside that pipe were they? Thought I'd also mention you don't have to grind everything ya know? Just where your putting new glass or gelcoat. You probably already know that though.

Woodonglass - LOL, you are so funny! I didn't realize it was that bad :) I did notice I kinda looked like the Snow Miser with all that deadly dust in my hair! But I do promise to get a Tyvek suit before next weekend when I get back to grinding. What's going to be funny is seeing me squeeze into a XXL!!! :) Either home depot needs a big and tall section or I need to lay off the venti white mochas and all the bad food that I eat! But seriously, I do need to drop some weight. I don't like how I'm looking in the videos. Also, recently a friend and co-worker of mine didn't pass the physical.. (kinda scary). I'm going to lose 60 lbs or die trying! Every Sunday I will post a scale pic as a reminder to myself to stay focused.

Tpenfield - It is not fun, but I am dedicated to getting this boat back into the water! ?Fish on!? :)
Build plan? Good question, the short answer is? no rebuilding plan. The long answer is, I took lots of measurements, pictures, videos and kept every piece of wood that I thought could be used as a reference or a template or even used as a piece of a template. I plan to use 2 LB Density Urethane Foam along with poly resin over marine or exterior grade ply. My intention is to put as much back as it was originally with two exceptions. First, the two main stringers will be two ? inch ply PL?d together because the original setup is too hard to duplicate. Secondly, the two back to back seats will be replaced with two captain?s chairs as this boat will be mainly used for fishing. Other than that everything is going to be put back as close to stock as possible. My plan is to do deck level and below first (I may add an extra bulk head or two). Then after that build up the consoles, bow, main seats rear seats and engine cover. Because I am not using the back to back seats there will be a need to find a spot for the foam that was on the sides of those seats. After the grinding is done I will post my stringer and bulkhead layout before I PL it to the hull and before I start any glass work. There is one issue that really bothers me and that is the huge open hatch above the gas tank? this is just asking for trouble. I plan to take my time and make sure I do that part of the project with extra extra care. I am hoping you guys can stop me before I make any mistakes. :) Honestly, this is all new to me. So far everything has been a huge learning experience done though my research and all the wonderfully kind people here at iboats.

Trooper82 - Is there really a person in that suit??? A real live person??? :)

Georgesalmon - No there was no wires in that pipe. The odd thing is that there is no way for water to get into that pipe because the top of the wood block for the bow eye is sealed and the only reason the spot under the bow eye is cracked open is cause I grinded to much trying to smooth it out. The pipe appears to serve no purpose unless it somehow adds some rigidity to the keel. I?m actually glad you mentioned that about scuffing, I have been just grinding of lips and glue, now I will also be prepping the appropriate areas for glass simultaneously, this will save me from coming back to the same area twice? I hope. :)

Jayboat66 - Happy New Year! Jay

Goldie I admire your efforts. I'm up here in the frozen Canadian north (Toronto area) doing the same rebuild just a different brand of boat. Shhhh (bayliner). Going log in and follow you thru to the splash. I love your vids man! Keep up the excellent work.
Cheers Stuart

Goldie, your boat is going to be awesome, the stringer is the most difficult. Search some videos on the web to see how some people did it.
I used regular pine boards from home depot 3/4" thick. Remember wood is just a core.

Re: 86 Sea Ray Restoration

Woodonglass - The intro says it all!!! LOL

Stuart - Welcome aboard Stuart! If there is anything I can help you with please let me know.

Jayboat66 - Thanks Jay, I'm actually just about ready to make a shopping list :)

Georgesalmon - It was cold, but that's not holding me back, just life in general, overtime on my main job, odd ball hours and always on-call at my second job, my son came home from Louisiana, I had to make sure he was squared away, trying to put in some time at the gym, and recovering from Christmas! Originally, my boy wanted a PS4, then he changed his mind and wanted some $300.00 studio beats by dre headphones instead, which was fine with me cause the headphones were cheaper than the PS4! But shoot, I got my blue-tooth headphones from Walgreens for like $19.99!! LOL the things we do for our kids... but I really don't mind at all he's a good guy. My main job schedule changed also. I went from having to report at 1139 to having to report at 0453! so now I go to bed at like 1800! LOL it took some time trying to adjust to getting up at 0230, shoot, I'm still not adjusted!! Most of all, I was just really tired and needed a break.... I'm Back!!!
