Hey Woody, that 50 50 mix acetone / mineral spirits seemed kinda oily, is that typical?

Well, I got three coats of the clean metal primer on but i need a fourth coat. I had a few runs that need sanding out, though ill try the scotch brite pad first. Plus i didnt get the coverage that I was looking for so back to HD for more paint. I still have to do the trim cylinders, transom plate and prop. Making good progress though ;)

I didnt have time to take the bolts and oil valves up to HD to match up the threads... but i had a old pack of chewing gum in the truck :D

Yeah, primer shows EVERYTHING!!! If you really want to get anal, sand down the bad spots and fill em with some JB Weld thinned with epoxy to make it a bit more Creamier and easier to smooth and sand. Make sure to keep shaking the can. The primer SOLIDS need to keep being mixed. They tend to want to settle out of the mix!!! Looking pretty good though. :D:clap2:

Goldie, if you ever do body work on a dent, when you bondo it you never sand it down to perfect, you leave it a tiny bit high and only rough sand it and then use primer putty to fill the sanding marks. If you sand it down to what looks perfect, it is guaranteed to be low and show up as a wave in the panel. This is just what happened to you. What looks and feels perfect is always over sanded.

Like Frisco Boater said, "you learn how to do something after your almost done" :D As always your spot on, I noticed the way it layed down kinda spotty sometimes and not smooth. Didnt occur to me that I didnt mix the can well enough Doh! I had attributed that to the weather being in the low 30's

Im going to examine each piece for imperfections and sand them out. Everyplace else gets scotch brite only. Divets and craters will get filled when i add a layer to the shark bite low spot. When you say epoxy do you mean like from harbor frieght? Also, what is the ratio of JB Weld to epoxy? or is there a good starting point ratio?

Also, my 50 50 mix of acetone and mineral spirits came out kinda oily, is that acceptable or "normal" ?

Yeah Rick I was baffled because I just knew I had it dialed in. I vaugely remember auto body when I was a young man. I do remeber the guide coat and its purpose to keep one from over sanding or not sanding in the correct places. I think it may be along the same lines of what your talking about.

Im going to sand the primer off the shark bite and lay in a smooth layer of jb weld and epoxy mix over it. Shoot it with primer then sand with a block instead of my hand to try to keep it contoured correctly. Please let me know if im missing anything or you have a better plan.

Well DUH I meant ACETONE NOT EPOXY Thin it with ACETONE!!! The JB WELD is bascially an epoxy product and you can thin it with acetone. DUH!!!! Yeah the MS will make the Wipe down mix seem a bit OILY but that's perfectly fine. It keeps the Acetone from being so AGRESSIVE and NOT eating the primer off the surface. Takes a bit longer to Flash off and dry but..it will and then it's fine. No Worries. If you use straight acetone it sometimes will eat the primer totally off the surface and destroy your work. NOT GOOD!!! Ask me how I learned THAT!!!!

Ask me how I know what it feels like when you wipe off a part with 100% acetone and all the primer wipes off with it!! :D

Im almost all primed up and ready for paint. Can I shoot the tractor paint through the HPLV? Or should I get an actual paint gun from HF?

I've come to the conclusion that its not realistic to get it all perfect without taking off the majority of the original paint. I got all the deep stuff out and im happy with it so far, maybe one more coat of primer... maybe two :D
