Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Thanks for the respose. :D I will work on getting up some photos.

I have to warn Everyone ... I blasted thru this project to get it back in the water and catching. I already plan to Modify my set up.

Biggest project this year is to find the Wind shield and side windows. It sounds like you folks over there might have a connection on them?

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Hello to all Starcrafters enjoying this thread.

I ran across this posting yesterday, looking for an original picture of a 1979 Smokercraft. (Please dont be angry)
My smokercraft looks way to similar in Color, shape, Style, Rotted transom.

Well it is now6 hours of reading and looking up parts and rethinking Half (most of my rebuild). I was finally at page79,when i hit the (next Button) and nothing happened. Have i caught up with everything?

The Boat is back on the trailer (Liking the no paint look). The trailer is looking good and looks like the boat sits a little lower.

I do not mean for my first post to be A hyjacker or anything like that but Ha you have done EVERYTHING i wanted to do. RESPECT

Thanks for the kinds words Gene, welcome to iboats:)

I have the boat in the garage and about ready for the new transom to get bolted in. Plenty to do this winter so I need to get going!

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

When i replaced the Transom I needed to push the transom pan a few different directions in order to set it straight.
The transom had been replaced once before i did it. They went with regular ply with no preservatives on it.
The bad part is they either had a lot of weight on the transom tray or somebody sat on it. The way it was sitting on the trailer
made the whole rear of the boat out of kilt. So while the motor was off and it was as light as possible we tweaked the boat
till it was better looking, mean while i began to bolt the transom to the hull. Then the transom to the transom pan.

Thanks

gene, I'd rather see these pics in your own thread instead of HA's. If you start one, I can easily move the above posts over to it.

You didn't use pressure treated wood at all in your rebuild did you?

Ha
I truly apologize for hi-jacking your thread. I do not have to many more pictures to show and fear a Thread of my own would be sub-standard to what i have seen and am learning from on this site. Should i delete the pictures?
Again my apologies

Ezmobee I did not use any pressure treated materials. I used 3/4 marine grade plywood with 3 coats of exterior stain. The stain dried in minutes in the 85 degree sun. After cutting the pieces to fit, i stained all the edges 4 or 5 times.

No biggie gene. Not every thread needs to be a full blow restoration documentary. You could just start one in the Starcraft section to show off your work. Again, I'd be happy to move these posts there.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well it's been a while since I've made any progress...but I am back to work on the SS:)

I've got the transom in place, ready to be bolted in with some 5200.

One small problem was that for a couple weeks I could not find the U bolts for the transom. Thankfully they have been found and I think I remember how this thing goes back together.

I had it in backwards real good and tight and thoroughly enjoyed removing it and repeating the process:D

The holes are all lined up and this should be a strong transom for years.

I am leaning towards painting the side panels light grey.

Not sure about the bare wood look and it would be higher maintenance too.

My other project is going to be building a box for the fuel tank.

I am going to try to get a pedestal base on the top of it and locate it in the stern port side area.

Still on the hunt for a good 2-stroke for this boat. I hope to get a low-hours 70hp and I have a lead on one now.

The trailer wheels are getting a fresh coat of semi-gloss black too while we're at it.

When did they start making paper tires??? I gotta git some!!

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Happy to report some work done and a good lead on an outboard for the SS.:)

I'm hoping to own this mid 70s Johnson 70hp later this week.:D:D

Will meeting the current owner on friday, and the motor sounds like a good one.

He says it fires up on a twitch of the key, has low hours and is in great original condition.

It does not have tilt and trim so it's a good thing I still have the CMC bracket.

It comes with controls so I should be in business once I get this bracket bolted back in place.

I've made some progress and have some photos of that to post as well.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

As promised...here are some photos of recent work.

The stern end of the gunwales are now bent back into place.

DSCF0637.jpg

Knee-brace bolts have been drilled and are being shown test-fitted backwards.

The previous restorer's botched drilling made this a bit of a challenge, but they all look good from both sides now.

The stern U-bolts are bolted thru the transom with plenty of 5200.

Also a nice view of Starcraft's double-riveting from the factory.

The starboard side was cut to fit the transom with the endcaps.

I should have cut these earlier as many others have and this would have been easier.

The cast pieces fit well now and are ready to go.
