Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Progress looks real good, & that 70 looks sweet. Hope it's all the seller says it is! Will that 40 be your kicker? :D Great work on the transom.

I bought a couple of those SS u-bolts but didn't install them. The only thing I'd use them for is if I have to tow another boat in distress. I decided not to use them in order to minimize the number of holes in the transom, but I'm thinking that maybe I'll go ahead and do it this spring, since the only other alternative would be to tie a rope to the lifting handles, and I don't want to do that.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well, I am now the proud owner of a '76 Johnson 70hp. It's a 3-cylinder, loop-charged with original paint.:D

The motor was owned by one person, ran on a tri-hull for a few weeks out of the year at his cottage so it's a low-hours motor.

It came with a decent prop and controls, and I'm pretty happy with the purchase.

Now I need to get going on a few things to get the boat ready.:)

Good news on the Jonny. HA. That ought to get you antsy to finish her up. :D

You are correct GA, lots to get done in the next month or so:)

Looks real good HA, hope the motor works out on Friday.
Glen

Thanks Glen, I got a good one I hope. Should be a good reliable motor for years.

Thanks LL, those U bolts are good for tubing and skiing as well so I figure they will get lots of use.

Looking good! That Johnson Should do ya great!

Thanks Rockmere, sure hope so!

LOL...thanks for stopping in buddy, we've been working on these boats for a little while now huh?

I'm sure yours will be in the water this summer, and you've done a lot more work than I have.

How much you score that nice 70 for?

Paid $1100 for the '76 Johnson 70hp and controls.

The boat is 2 years younger than me and the outboard is a year older.

I have high hopes for this motor:)

I've got some more photos of progress to post up soon.

Some progress on the transom...the three bolts on the stern and starboard side are in.

These are held in with the nuts that are engineered a bit larger than the bolts...and they are much more difficult than nyloc to get bolted on.

Not sure what they are called exactly, my friend that works for Fastenal recommended them.

I think they are a good choice for this job, being one-use only it's important to get it right the first time.

I bought these stainless screws for the splashwell and interior transom shelf.

The box of 100 was a good deal and I will find a use for them all eventually.

Here is the cowling for the 70hp, on the shelf for the time being.

Here are some photos of the six knee brace bolts from the outside.

The CMC bracket is ready to be bolted on, I had it out to make sure the bolts did not interfere with the bracket.

Here's the rest of the 70hp Johnson in the back of my Explorer.

I'm hoping to get it bolted on the boat soon enough to not procure proper storage for it.

If I build a stand it will only be used for a few weeks.;)

Here is the 70hp Johnson again, and you can also see my spinning rod in there.

A look underneath the splashwell.

That is all for now, hope to make some more progress each day from here on out.:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

From your first post in the thread, HA

I hope I can put this thing back together again:D

I think your worries were unfounded. ;)

The 70 HP should move the SS nicely. How much does the CMC weigh? It looks like you have the clamp-on motor adapter, too. A Spring launch looks like it could be a possibility. I am not putting words in your mouth. :D

I bet it'd be nice to wrestle that OB straight from the car to the transom. I think it's going to be nice today, maybe warm enough to paint an SS?:D

All looks good, great job on the transom, very solid. I'm with Jas, you should just store the 70 on the transom. :)

Thanks GA, the bracket weighs about 50lbs from what I could find out online. I was thinking a bit heavier than that.

We've got everything we need to get the boat ready.

Just need some warmer weather, and Jason is correct it's already in the mid 50s here today.

It's probably the nicest day of this spring, time to get after it.

Thanks LL, a week or so in the car will be fine but no longer than that! Back to work...

Nice solid work man. That transom and the rest of the boat looks great. It'll be slick to see that CMC all bracket hooked up as well.

Here's the paint that we're working with for the side panels and consoles.

I'll be honest, I was expecting a light grey but we ended up with a metallic silver type of finish.

Not sure if I like it or not, but we are probably gonna give it a whirl.

In reparation for the side panels, I also got to work on adhering some foam board pieces to the hull.

Every little bit helps;)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Since the current winch post is not a perfect fit, I needed to get the original ready to be bolted on.

Lookin' at what color you're using, I guess Yellow Submarine or Bumblebee is not her new name. LOL You were pondering keeping the original colors way back in the beginning. I like the new color - much better.
