Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration
Trailer's looking great, Huron, as well as the boat. Hope you won't be afraid to use them when you're finished! I'm afraid my trailer will remain as it is, just to remind me of my humble beginnings. (Besides, it's galvanized, so I'll leave it alone. I do envy all the painted trailers I see here though!)
Are you spraying or brushing that rusty metal primer?
Thanks LL, don't worry...this boat will get LOTS of use next spring/summer
We sprayed the burnt orange/brown rusty metal primer with cans. Brushing would've probably saved some cash but I take the path of least resistance once in a while.
I think He is probably watching the wife do it LL
Looks really good HA keep at it
I did let her have some fun painting, she enjoyed getting the underside of the beams
Almost done now right? Are you going to paint the hull or leave it polished and put the swooshes back on?
Getting there, probably no splash this year but that's ok. She will be ready by ice out in March!
We are gonna repaint the yellow swoosh and stripe under the gunwales.
I have been debating whether or not to get some black rub rail, leaning towards keeping the yellow for simplicity's sake.
+1 on the Rustoleum Rust Converter. That stuff is good. I used the spray can but if I was doing a big trailer I might just loock at the POR 15 in quart size. Each bomb can costs $5.00.
Trailer work build character! I would gladly trade anyone motor work for trailer work though. Tedious and there is little to show for it. It needs to be done however.
Keep plugging away Mike. By the way I work in an Orthopedic Brace shop and we polish stainless and aluminum to a mirror finish. If you or Jas needs any tips I can find out how. The guys in my shop do some amazing work.
Thanks Don, we might need a few tips on polishing the anodized trim pieces. I think the trick is to sand off the anodizing layer to get down to bare aluminum maybe?
Boat looks great. I can't wait to see the ''new'' look. Nice work on the trailer too. Can I just throw in my 2 cents worth? I see the trailer is pretty much bolted together. There must be some flex as you tow it. I'm wondering maybe if you should have some welding done just to stiffen up and make the trailer stronger. Especially while it's all apart. Shouldn't cost a whole lot to throw a bead of weld here and there. Don't take offense, I was just throwing that out there. Keep up the good work.
I think that might be a good idea TC, I have a buddy that has reasonable rates and is a skilled welder so I might see what he thinks. Thanks for stopping by fellas!
We are back in town until thursday so we might see a little progress this week
