Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Boat looks great. I can't wait to see the ''new'' look. Nice work on the trailer too. Can I just throw in my 2 cents worth? I see the trailer is pretty much bolted together. There must be some flex as you tow it. I'm wondering maybe if you should have some welding done just to stiffen up and make the trailer stronger. Especially while it's all apart. Shouldn't cost a whole lot to throw a bead of weld here and there. Don't take offense, I was just throwing that out there. Keep up the good work.

Nice work on the trailer painting HA. Also nice work on the grass painting, driveway painting and probably feet/arms painting! :D

TII

LOL, thanks Triton. I really wish I hadn't painted the driveway though:facepalm:

At least when I cut the grass the yard will look normal again:D

Trailer's looking great, Huron, as well as the boat. Hope you won't be afraid to use them when you're finished! I'm afraid my trailer will remain as it is, just to remind me of my humble beginnings. (Besides, it's galvanized, so I'll leave it alone. I do envy all the painted trailers I see here though!)

Are you spraying or brushing that rusty metal primer?

Thanks LL, don't worry...this boat will get LOTS of use next spring/summer;)

We sprayed the burnt orange/brown rusty metal primer with cans. Brushing would've probably saved some cash but I take the path of least resistance once in a while.

I think He is probably watching the wife do it LL:D Looks really good HA keep at it :)

I did let her have some fun painting, she enjoyed getting the underside of the beams:D

Almost done now right? Are you going to paint the hull or leave it polished and put the swooshes back on?

Getting there, probably no splash this year but that's ok. She will be ready by ice out in March!

We are gonna repaint the yellow swoosh and stripe under the gunwales.

I have been debating whether or not to get some black rub rail, leaning towards keeping the yellow for simplicity's sake.

+1 on the Rustoleum Rust Converter. That stuff is good. I used the spray can but if I was doing a big trailer I might just loock at the POR 15 in quart size. Each bomb can costs $5.00.

Trailer work build character! I would gladly trade anyone motor work for trailer work though. Tedious and there is little to show for it. It needs to be done however.

Keep plugging away Mike. By the way I work in an Orthopedic Brace shop and we polish stainless and aluminum to a mirror finish. If you or Jas needs any tips I can find out how. The guys in my shop do some amazing work.

Thanks Don, we might need a few tips on polishing the anodized trim pieces. I think the trick is to sand off the anodizing layer to get down to bare aluminum maybe?

I think that might be a good idea TC, I have a buddy that has reasonable rates and is a skilled welder so I might see what he thinks. Thanks for stopping by fellas!

We are back in town until thursday so we might see a little progress this week:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I managed to get out and work on the boat today.

Well...actually just the trailer.

Hopefully this is gonna be the final coat of Rustoleum on the trailer.

Some roller brackets got painted with their second coat.

The fenders got taped and painted too.

I was thinking that black might look nice, but they are now grey.

I've been having some fun practicing my graffiti.

As you see here, Roslynn mostly just stood around reading the masking papers:D

Feels nice to cross one more thing off the list. That trailer will be better than new. I'm hoping to be there myself in a week or so...more like two or three at my pace :)

I love how you try to play it like Roz is chillin all the while you are bustin butt. I wonder if that is the story she'd tell:rolleyes:

Progress Mike! Keep on it, we'll get there:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I painted the orange winch stand tonight. I will finish this later tonight or tomorrow hopefully.

I think I need to buy new U bolts for this stand as well.

Here's the new location for the trailer. I'm hoping to get the rollers bolted back on soon enough.

The trailer wheels are getting a fresh coat of semi-gloss black too while we're at it.

Here's a couple "before" picture of the wheels. The fenders got touched up tonight too, so that tape can now be removed.:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well that's all the progress for a bit...we are heading back up north for another long weekend.

I was leaning towards staying home to work on the boat/trailer, but with school starting up next week...we're taking time off while we can.;)

They are calling for temps over 100 and Huron Sr. has his 24' Seaswirl rigged up with a new Yamaha 9.9hp kicker...so we are going to enjoy the weather and try to burn 180 gallons of fuel by Monday:D

We will probably have to fire up the 225hp once in a while to accomplish that:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Here's what my view was for a good part of last weekend:D

We chased walleye and salmon around my favorite big lake, not much action but a great time out with my dad.:)

The new/used 9.9hp Yamaha kicker ran like a champ, as did the 225hp.

We burnt up a bunch of old fuel that had been sitting in the big glasser's tanks for a bit.

I started working these brackets with the wire wheel, they cleaned up nicely but I think I'm gonna paint them.

What do you guys think, grey like the rest of the trailer or black? We have black here, so that's what I'll probably use if it ever stops raining.

A bunch of stuff is ready to get bolted back on still, waiting patiently.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I removed all the tape from the trailer. Let's just say I should've used the green stuff:)

It looks acceptable, so onward we go to working on the boat again soon I hope.

I know this is a boat forum, but here are some more boring photos of the necessary evil, the boat trailer.

Enjoy the weekend bro!

Have a good one HA! :)

TII

Thanks fellas, we did have a great weekend.

Our oldest son turned 6 on the 4th and he started 1st grade on tuesday.:)

Here's another shot of the big Seaswirl. That Kubota is fun when the fish aren't biting.

Huge metal boat, idling at Stoneport harbor while she's getting loaded up with limestone.

Some cormorants hanging out on the can marking the shoals southeast of Middle Island.

This is part of "shipwreck alley" north of Thunder Bay. Over 30 wrecks well preserved nearby.

I've seen many vessels run aground here. You can see the green water beyond the buoy.

Dangerous limestone boulders all over the place ready to bite into a hull/prop.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I've had a few minutes here and there to work on the trailer, so here's the progress.:)

The other wheel got painted semi-gloss black. I also bolted the roller brackets, they will still be adjusted a bit.

There are three height levels, and I moved those from the highest to the middle holes.

Hopefully I can let the boat sit about 1.5" lower as a result. I will move them back up if the boat is too close to the trailer.

For some contrast we painted these black. We are looking forward to being done with the trailer soon.

I'm managed to get one of the guide bunk brackets bolted up.

The other one needs new bolts I believe, so I will buy some.

I measured and it should be ok, it may be a bit too close to the boat.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Here are some shots of the starboard side guide bunk.

I would need to drill out some new holes to attach the bunks this way, but I'd also be able to move the lights up.
