Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Time for a riddle. How many glassers does it take to put a tinny back in the water?

Seems to be a rite of passage in the Starcraft restos.

Glad you found a motor, HA.

I've wanted a boat to salvage parts from for a while now, but this one is water-ready so I'm not sure it will end up being scrapped:confused:

I'm going up north again for a really long weekend on thursday, so I might even take the glasser on vacation to test the motor.

Did you go vulcan mind power on him? If not, you still have an ace in the hole

That should get it closer to $500, right? :D

Nice trailer work man. I've got that to look forward to next week when I take another crack at it.

You sound awfully excited to start wrenching on rusty bolts there Sprint:) Good to see ya buddy!

Selling a glasser and trailer =400.00. Cutting one up with a sawzall = PRICELESS !!!

I think $400 would be a better option...the budget for worms, beer, fuel and pretzels...not necessarily in that order;)

Wow, I just spent the last few hours reading through this tread from the beginning, awesome job so far.makes me wanna gut my 72 starcraft Capri. But i would ruin it no doubt plus no money for that.

Thanks for the kind words Farns, that's how I got the restoration bug myself...reading North Beach, CheapBoatKev, RickAirMedic, and Ezmobee's threads. I'm sure you can do as well as I have, probably much better, I say go for it.

Welcome aboard!

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Thanks Huron Angler for the words of encouragement. Maybe someday I could get it underway. I already know I have a soft spot or two on the floor. For a temporary solution I put a metal plate over the soft spot but put it under the temporary outdoor rugs that are for now the carpet of the boat. I also took out the back to back seats and put in two large single triton boat seats. I have done a lot of work to the boat already but nothing to your magnitude. when I first got it I spent a good couple of days buffing and waxing to get rid of all the oxidation from sitting outside uncovered for who knows how long. But I got if for free so I guess thats a small price to pay for the boat. I only have one major issue to overcome and that would be figuring out why I can only get 7mph out of a 65hp johnson. The first thing I need to do is get a tiny tach installed to find out RPM's at WOT and also figure out if my hub is spun on the prop. Hopefully the rpms are good and the hub IS spun, that is the easiest fix. Until then I dont think a full restore is a good idea. No sense in having a perfect boat that doesn't really run, unless I can find a great deal on another motor with controls. But for now with buying a house and hopefully another baby on the way, it will have to be on the backburner. I cant wait to see the final pictures of your project. Best of luck and tell your wife she is awesome for giving you a helping hand and sticking by you through all your hard work. I know some wives would get annoyed with the time and money it takes to do all that you have done.

I also reupholstered everything in the boat last winter..

That makes two of us. Maybe a first?

I did enter negotiations with a guy about a motor tonight.

http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/boa/2546700123.html

I used every one of Jason's tricks and got him down to $650 (me picking it up in GR).

It was listed for $900 in GR, but he got no responses.

Sounds like a good strong motor after talking with him, so I might own a glasser tri-hull tomorrow.:)

They have a club and everything...with a cool sticker.

In all honesty, it will be on CL the next morning and get picked up for $400 if the trailer is in good shape.;)

Hey, I looked at that one tonight in GR. I was not wowed. I think I am going to be patient and keep looking. He said he had interest but the guy left on vacation. What a quinky-dink.
I think the glasser and trailer would be hard to sell alone but you might know better than me. I am looking at some other 70 horse options. Besides I am not in the restoration phase yet. I'll keep reading and learning before I start.
Right now I am helping my brother on a 1981 ss181 rebuild.
Hope you have a great vacation!

I'm with Yooper, sacrifice the Glasser!

Nice progress Mike, the boat looks great. I'll be using that Citrus stripper on the Sea Scamp, thaks for blazing a trail buddy. I agree trailer work is very suckish, but necessary.

I think he might have sold it, the ad has been deleted.

I can't decide if I should rush to get this rig on the water or save my pennies and buy a newer Yamaha or Evinrude. I could probably save another thousand or two and try to get a deal in January or February.

We had a great vacation, caught some walleye and a personal best catfish from Lake Huron:D

Lots of time sitting around the campfire, riding the quads, drinking cold beer and throwing horseshoes too:)

Thanks Don! I'm a huge proponent of the Citristrip product, great stuff.

I was hoping that my trailer would've been magically stripped and painted when we got back in town...no such luck so back to work with the wire wheel it is:D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well I didn't manage to get the photos up yet, but the trailer is primed with Rustoleum rusty metal primer. No better product for the price:)

It's gonna get sprayed with Rusto smoke grey tonight. If I'm really lucky it will be painted and dried when I get home, but I'm not counting on that.:D

Then I could get started on bolting up the hardware.

We are gonna be out of town again this weekend, picking up a 75hp Evinrude that's bolted on a 16' Starcraft tin can. Not sure the model but that makes it a surprise:)

I got a real buffing tool on hand now so I should be able to get the aluminum polished up on the SS. I might start with the trim pieces and go from there.

We did some fishing from shore the other day and had a blast. Pike are starting to get even more aggressive now.:D

Pics will be posted here sometime soon;)

I'd like to see how you guys make this happen. I seem to be dumb as a brick and can't quite get it.

You and Me both Jas I spent forever trying to clean up and mildly polish that dash piece thinking about just scrubbing My trim with a magic eraser and calling it good.

This is the buffer. Have not used it yet, we've been working on the trailer.

Trailer's looking great, Huron, as well as the boat. Hope you won't be afraid to use them when you're finished! I'm afraid my trailer will remain as it is, just to remind me of my humble beginnings. (Besides, it's galvanized, so I'll leave it alone. I do envy all the painted trailers I see here though!)

Are you spraying or brushing that rusty metal primer?

Almost done now right? Are you going to paint the hull or leave it polished and put the swooshes back on?

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

+1 on the Rustoleum Rust Converter. That stuff is good. I used the spray can but if I was doing a big trailer I might just loock at the POR 15 in quart size. Each bomb can costs $5.00.

Trailer work build character! I would gladly trade anyone motor work for trailer work though. Tedious and there is little to show for it. It needs to be done however.

Keep plugging away Mike. By the way I work in an Orthopedic Brace shop and we polish stainless and aluminum to a mirror finish. If you or Jas needs any tips I can find out how. The guys in my shop do some amazing work.
