ooooiif, that trailer is a piece of work. How about 2x6s or 2x8s mounted vertical on simple L brackets? Otherwise, I think you need to get the longer versions of those bunk brackets and U-bolt 'em.

Nice progress HA and nice crappies. Looking at that trailer it sure seems like a pita to convert to bunks . I think EZ's suggestion would be the simplest probably get your keel rollers set up first to establish height and location for your bunk brackets.Looking at those aluminum angles on the stern of trailer and wondering if you take those off turn em around with the longer side perpendicular to trailer support can you ubolt em back on and use em to mount your brackets ? Or one above and one below trailer tube and through bolt em sandwiching tube in the middle ?

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

It was great to finally meet ya the other day Mike!

I hate to say it but I think I set you up for failure by giving you those brackets. So sorry man.

I am just now noticing that your cross members are straight across (no v shape to em).

I'd prolly do just what these guys said. Set the keel rollers then add on the brackets that hold the board vertically.

The only other thing I can think is to slide those bunk brackets in closer to center line - and/or use a 4x4 for your bunk.

Yup something about me and boat trailers. Never straightforward but always interesting.

I'd like to use something a bit stronger. When I set the 2x4 on there it had more flex than I'd like.

Thanks Yooper, some good ideas for me to think about here.:)

I'm gonna get back to work stripping paint and drinking beer while I decide what direction to head:D

It was good to see ya Jason, nice to see the boys enjoying your tree fort and swings:D

No worries, my trailer should've had angled cross beams but it doesn't, oh well.

I should get some keel rollers and see how things shape up, good idea.

Using 4x4 bunks would solve a couple issues I think, even though I was hoping to use the 2x4 I have laying around.

Thanks Jason, yeah that was the biggest Crappie I've seen caught. Course I've only been fishing for crappie for two years now.:D

My buddy caught a 15 incher or so apparently in our local river a few years ago.

Not to steal your thunder but my personal best on crappie is 18"s. It was a black. it was so big and odd looking. I just could not wrap my mind around a crappie that big. I had to take it to a buddy of mine who is a game warden and ask him what it was. :D

Some more progress...stripping zinc chromate off, and some remnants of the off-white.

It's really getting a shine in certain areas. Still plenty of work to do.:)

You must be just about all out of scrape & scrub by now. I wouldn't get it too shiny, shine is addictive!:)

Looks kinda cool with all bare aluminum with just the stripes on it. However, if you went that route, yellow wouldn't be the way to go I don't think.

The stripe below the gunwale is gone, so here's what she looks like with just the "swoosh" stripe.

We don't like this, but here it is for consideration.:)

I also got to work on my guide bunk brackets. They were all rusty and needed some wire wheeling, so I got to it.

Here's where these brackets came from...the old rickety trailer I'm using for the AeroCraft.

The SS deserves them, so I salvaged them right away and can't wait to get them finished.

It should make retrieving in a river infinitely easier.:D

I went ahead and sprayed them with some self-etching primer I had laying around once they were taken apart and cleaned up.

Then I sprayed on some smoke grey rustoleum that also was laying around.

Mike, you guys are making something all of you can be proud of and enjoy.
Nice Work! Can't wait to see how it ends up. ;)

(P.S. Put a couple of stitches in that T-shirt and put it on fleabay....probably pay for the trailer parts.:D)

I hear ya...but with that yellow rub rail our options are a bit limited.

I think it would look weird with that being the only yellow on the boat.

I could invest in brand new rubrail, but that sounds like an expensive hassle to me:)

I'm about to try to order new rub rail (by necessity), I hope it will be around $42 plus shiping for 35'.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

All the yellow paint is now gone. Still working on some touch-up areas but thru the woods on paint removal.:D

I spent some time sanding down the trailer and the new winch post to prep for paint.

Hoping to paint the trailer tomorrow night.:)
